Alphonso Johnson played at the bridge position on his fretless long before he retired from Weather Report. Jaco Pastorius was then hired and coincidently played in the bridge position on a bass he had converted to become fretless, with arguably a vaguely similar playing style as Alphonso. If you're going to credit anyone for playing at the bridge position, personally would go for the predecessor: Alphonso Johnson.

The one thing that really helped me was taking a metronome to ascending lines I made up. This forced me to get faster with 2 fingers and 3 fingers. To get the economypicking down you want to make descending lines and metronome them to speed as well. Hammer on’s are best learned on the first lesson. The way you learn hammer ons is through slap lines like Hair by graham central station, or left hand tapping. Every bass technique I’ve learned I just figured it out, not trying to plug my channel but you can see proof of my playing in my channel.

I found a good exercise on KZread. You keep your 3rd finger (one next to pinky) on E on the A string then with your first, second and pinky on the G string play C, C#, D# in forward and backward sequence over and over. But make sure while ur playing C,C#, D# u can also cleaning play the E. You’ll feel ur pinky and inner wrist start to burn shortly.

Yes, it does. When you play quite quickly (think Bernadette ), playing closer to the bridge where the string resistance is stiffer allows for your fingers to execute more rapidly due to less (or shorter ) vibration pattern of said string as well as the string remaining more static, thus more available to repetitive attack.
