Hello again!! I see a lot of people asking what subculture they fit under or whether they are alternative or not. It is a very hard question to answer in just a comment reply. Sooo I plan on making a series about all the different subcultures and alternative culture in general. I wanna try and be pretty in depth about it and do lots of research. Just a heads up that I will be doing that soon

@Taylor Vosdingh I mean most people who dress alt do it inspired by that music but what music counts as alternative now is starting to branch out a lot, for example I listen to Amanda Palmer, yungblud, the cure, G.L.O.S.S., and all of those are considered alternative despite sounding really different, and there are even more different styles than just those, they're just some of the ones I personally listen to

@Taylor Vosdingh people say that because when alternative subculture appeared (but before it was generalised as alternative) they were brought together all by music, and the style you wore was based on what music you listened to. Now people are attracted to other aspects than the music and I personally don't think there's anything wrong with that, as long as you acknowledge the importance of the music ur good. If you tell me some non-alternative artists you normally like I might be able to give you some music suggestions that are closer to ur taste if u want? I might not find anything but I can try at least

If you want fingerless gloves, look at Halloween stores or your local Claire's will have some variation of them. For my striped fingerless gloves, I actually repurposed them and reused them from an Alice In Wonderland costume I got a long time ago. If you want fishnet ones, cut the feet off of some fishnets and then keep the legs to wear normally OR make it a top. Spirit Halloween sells some BANGER fucking fishnets, it's where I got mine at.

Some tips from a long time punk dude: -Patches on pants, you can use almost anything as a patch, sew them with floss - Metal and plastic chains, they’re really cheap in hardware stores -safety pins - Bleach splattered clothing - grungy chunky sweaters, they kinda got that 80s punk vibe -Punk (or other alternative genre) Band merch, can diy that too - collars - military/police clothing, fuck it up and put some patches on -spraypaint or draw on clothes when ur bored -metal spikes Not so legal tips: - Borrow plastic chains from construction sights - Mercedes stars - Street signs - I use the sticker signs in underground stations that say stuff like ‚no alc‘ as patches Modification stuff: - tattoos ( i always do stick n pokes w my friends bc i like the vibe, but you can go to a professional with that, it’s prolly a better idea) - piercings (i do those myself too, not recommended tho) -dye your hair, look for a nice punk haircut that suits u, if you like Ultimately there’s no real way to look punk or alternative, these are just bulletpoints of my own style. Do whatever feels good and comes naturally to you and most importantly, have fun!

@@antidimensional7131 ok so (sorry this is going to be a really long explanation!) you get a rly long piece of floss and then you loop it in a stitching needle thing, so that the needle is in the middle of the whole floss, and then pick the needle up with all the floss pointing down. knot the bottom of the two pieces of floss multiple pieces: TOGETHER (dont tie them like shoelaces), knot them into themselves. and then u put a patch onto a piece of clothing and u stitch it using the needle by poking it through from the inside of the clothing, pulling it out and then poking it back through, then repeating this over and over all around the patch until its done. then you tie the floss by knotting it into a previous stitch. if this explanation doesnt make sense, find an easy stitching tutorial on youtube

pro tip for those that have little to no money. Use wht u already have a lot of alternative styles especially punk are mainly centered around the idea of community and self sufficiency, basically eat the rich typa stuff. Diy is the way to go especially for bb alts. learn to sew even if you start w a 99 cent store sewing kit start making things w ur hands. Use bleach (but plzzz b safe w it) or paint to draw on ur clothes or make designs, write messages you believe and wear em proudly. tear apart a shirt you hate and make it into a patch you lov. now sew it onto a pair of bottoms that need a little work. the possibilities only stop at the brink of your own creativity and imagination. Its all abt building yourself into who you want to b and expressing your ultimate truth. never forget fire can b made from sticks and stones. and for the more visually appealing aspect of it 99/dollar tree sells safety pins, hair accessories, basic sunglasses you can customize, and potentially also basic tights or gloves depending on where u go.

@@yxw6528 Hi, I agree, although for now I never really tried sewing and self making clothing, but I'm curious to try one day. How do you customize? My main thing is that I never really throw off anything until it's really worn out, at most I give it to others, but only if it's still in good state, not otherwise. I keep wearing it and pairing it differently for various looks and styles, depending on the occasion. This way they last even more, though, because individually, they're used less :D. But I might style up an old black large t-shirt into a wider and lower cut scoop neck, more interesting and that keeps cool and comfy in summer :). Alt to me doesn't mean a specific look, not necessarily different, but not tossing out the past, in general, to learn from it for the present, even if some might stay more into a specific atmosphere, like goth, dark, rock, emo, and other like to mix, like me, or having long periods of more "casual" looks, most still add their flavours and individual elements, like you said, to looks even if it shares many common traits. Plus I'm a male and straight, so if I were to follow what's typically prescribed for us, except 80's and 70's, it's quite too limited in scope and boring :), I explore from many styles and try to workout what's more "wearable" personally, for instance among glam rock 80's look I might prefer something from Sebastian Bach, rather than more attention catching looks with much more makeup, but it's great if another guy prefers that even if I don't see that on me. Sorry I digressed a lot! Grungy is great as well, I listen to a lot of Nirvana and Foo Fighter classics, but also Chris Cornell (you don't say? ^_^), for look, not intentional, but I love checkered or plaid shirts, what about you. Nice to talk with you btw.

okay, there are some misconceptions surrounding music. there’s tons of alt music, such as emo, punk, pop punk, goth, grunge etc. people talk about things like melanie martinez, halsey, billie eilish and lil peep as being alt, which they aren’t. these are basically pop but more angsty, whereas alt music is all subgenres of rock - people often think of it as just being depressing music, but this isn’t true! something all alt music has in common is talking about important issues with politics and mental health, but things like emo, pop punk and punk generally have a fast and upbeat sound.

  • @reekrhymeswithfreak

Wait but melanie Martinez music IS about important stuff like mental health and politics. Orange Juice is about an eating disorder, The Principal is about taking advantage of your power and not looking after the people you're supposed to (like politicians), Strawberry Shortcake is about victim blaming, sexism and objectification etc, Tag You're It is about sexual assault, Gingerbread Man is about toxic relationships, and so on. If you haven't listened to the music it's easy to just brush it off, but when you go into most of her songs they're pretty deep.

Go to any jewelry counter/section walmart target local mall etc. And get a jewelry cleaning kit. They usually come with a solution jar with a scrubby and a gold and silver polishing cloth. Every six months I take a day to go through all my jewelry and wash and polish them. Stainless steel/surgical steel jewelry doesn't really tarnish, is kind of cheep, and is a good alternative for those who turn green with silver and bronze or copper.

I'd avoid polishing plated jewelry honestly because the polish strips away a layer of metal and can make the jewelry wear down faster and expose the other metal underneath, using methylated spirits and a Q tip to clean it regularly will help prevent it from tarnishing too much without stripping away any metal, same goes with detailed jewelry, I have a silver crucifix I got from a thrift store that was super dirty and I had to polish it a lot to get it even close to clean again and now Jesus barely has a face. If it's at that stage you will have to polish it (it was so tarnished I could barely tell what metal it was) but the key is not letting it get to that stage. Also pewter is a pretty cheap metal that a lot of goth jewelry used to be made from (not sure why it isn't now tbh) but if you can find pewter jewelry online it shouldn't be expensive and it won't wear down like plated stuff does

I once made a necklace out of paperclips. I googled how much they cost, and I found a 250 pack of coloured once for nine dollars (the basic one's are probably even cheaper) and of course you don't need them all. But you probably have some lying around anyways (or just steal one each week at your office/school so no one notices). I think this is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to diy a necklace and I really like the look of it.

I can’t recall if it was mentioned in the video but thrifting is extremely helpful for starting you style. A lot of pants in the uniform section have a lot of pockets and a slight wideness that could make great patch pants - also jackets! There’s a lot of cheap denim jackets that could be diy’d. But in general thrifting is a big way to get your closet started (and even shopping for band shirts off depop and Etsy that you like can help if you can’t always shape new)

Hi! Music is definitely a really huge part of being alternative. However, anyone can be alternative but the different subcultures usually revolve around music more. Like goth and punk are very specific when it comes to music. You can be goth but not look it as long as you listen to goth music. I personally feel like you can listen to whatever you want if you just want to use the blanket term, alternative. Alternative is so vague because so many people fall under that umbrella term. So far from what I've observed lately I'd say artists like The Garden and Ashnikko. Emo rap is super popular right now. There are so many subcultures so I cannot name them all but some of the most popular ones are goth, punk, emo, scene. A lot of people are into things like kinderwhore, goblincore, cottagecore. Honestly it is hard to keep up with lol

@@m1nced_gutz hey, it's funny, I know more bands from the genres you didn't have a lot of bands for than from the ones you did. Like, direct opposite knowledge base, it's kind of cool :) grunge: nirvana, soundgarden, alice in chains, pearl jam, stone temple pilots, smashing pumpkins One of the reasons for grunge sounding/ looking the way it does is because it was a response to the 80s. Whereas the 80s were electronic synths and bright colors, grunge was a rejection of that. Plus the opioid crisis had a huge impact on the genre. As in, an impossible to overstate impact on the genre. Out of the 5-6 most popular grunge bands, almost all of them had a band member die, and whose death was directly linked to opioids. The notable exception is pearl jam, who wrote a song (dirt) about the problem. punk: 70s-80s: the clash, sex pistols, the buzzcocks, black flag, dead kennedys 80s-90s: the offspring, no doubt, blink-182, green day Punk first became popular in the 70s, but it fell out of mainstream attention in the 80s and was mostly underground. But everything changed when the Dookie album came out. Following that, a lot of the bands which had been popular within the subculture found themselves getting a lot more attention.

That sucks. I grew up with an abusive mom and she was always back and forth with me saying i looked cute and then saying it was bad (my tatts, hair dye, being an emo kid, etc). I know its really hard, especially when youre younger or more dependent on ur mom/parent but when it comes to certain things you dont always have to listen to her. At the end of the day its your body, your style, and your self expression is extremly important. If youre not hurting yourself or others, then just do what you like. If you like how you look or ur comfortable with the style you try, then just go for it and if people (including ur mom/parent) have something negative to say, then thats just words. Your self expression and confidence is more important.

Some alt beginner tips (baby alt here) -The dollar store after Halloween and even during Halloween has a LOT of tights and alt things. Don’t underestimate the cool shit that can be found at the dollar store -jewelry and accessories can be made by yourself!! Get some old jewelry you don’t use, maybe some charms (maybe you can make some) , some hot glue and go to town!! -DIY is very important, if you see something that isn’t “alt” enough for you then get it anyways and customize it! -go to Michaels ,Joannes, hobby lobby ect during a sale (they have them daily) and get charms and chains. You can customize jewelry for very cheap -Are your fishnets or legging ripping? Rip them more to turn them into ripped leggings that you can wear one more time. -keep in minds that aesthetics like grunge came from people who were poor and couldn’t afford good clothes so they were very worn down, if your buying grunge clothes new then you are not doing grunge right. Rip your jeans!!! Rip your shirts!! Wear worn down boots!!! Go wild!!! Edit: I have a friend that makes their own earrings for $3 at the dollar store, she bought small jars, dangly earrings, and mini googly eyes. They put the googly eyes in the jars and then hot glued/hooked the dangly earring on the jar. Super cool :)) thought I should share.

Basically just dye or style your hair in a way you think is fun or do this with makeup, thrift and diy your clothes and accessories and base what you wanna wear on personal enjoyment and expression rather than conventional styles and hardwear, pins and patches are your best friends if you can't afford or aren't allowed new clothes

Mine is kinda for eyeliner. You dont have liquid eyeliner? Not a problem! Use heavy, and I mean HEAVY amounts of black eyeshadow and a sharp pointed brush for the points.

around halloween they sell tights at the 99 cent store and i found some black thigh high socks at the dollar tree! and for jewlery its actually really easy to make your own especially for kidcore folks you can grab some toys from dollar tree and some earring hooks from amazon and your set! pretty much all my jewlery is either homemade, second hand, hand me downs or gifts. and you can buy super cheap medium quality makeup from places like dollar tree and 99 cent stores. if youre seeing a pattern here haha. and for clothing, THRIFT STORES and honestly you can make literally ANYTHING look alt, stuff from brandy too(yes brandy melvile) and finally DIY you can DIY old stuff to look alternative. honestly its not about the singular pieces and the whole outfit itself, hope this helps!!

My personal favourite diy advice is Use whatever you have already , you can do wonders with scrap fabric , bottletabs , plastic bags etc Dollar stores and thrift shops are pretty great for diy supplies for cheap Learn how to sew or embroider Bleach you can some cool things with just be cautious and wear gloves ( an alternative to bleach is also baking soda and vinegar , or hydrogen peroxide ) Beads are quite fun Making your own jewelry you can do for fairly cheap and it’s quite fun
