    @@martydom666 Based on a quick google search it sounds like an average 50 cal round hits with around 15,000 ft-lbs. The 4 bore on the other hand, delivers a whopping 30,000 ft-lbs. Twice as much energy, however in terms of penetration they are hard to compare. The 50 is half the diameter with a very pointed tip while the 4 bore is a full inch and completely rounded. I would wager that a good 50 cal round could have made it through the glass but that's just my guess.

  • @brunothehumble

    @brunothehumble

    3 ай бұрын

    @@martydom666 in terms of raw muzzle energy the four bore is roughly double what the .50 BMG puts out (about 30,000 foot/pounds of muzzle energy vs 15,000). But it does this with a bullet that is just slightly double the diameter and about quadruple (ish) the mass and cruising at 1/2 to 2/3 the velocity. It is an absolutely massive bullet that is going fairly slow. The four bore delivers almost three times the felt recoil of a .50 BMG.

    You might think about putting a mirror at a 45 degree angle behind the glass, and point the camera into that, 90 degrees off to the side of the bullet's path. Mirrors are *WAY* cheaper than slow motion cameras.

    Scott, I sent you an email with a video recommendation as a tribute to Paul Harrell. Honest Outlaw commented several years ago on one of Paul's videos saying he'd like to see a meat target hit with a .50 BMG and Paul said he'd like to see that, too. He recommended asking you because he doesn't have a .50 BMG.

    The 416 rigby and the 600 are his 2 most powerful rifles in terms of penetration... i genuinely thought they would go straight through that glass, especially after being damaged. Im amazed it held up to that onslaught as long as it did.

  • @Voxelowo

    Does he not have a .50 BMG? Or is the rigby better at penetrating, despite the smaller caliber size and lower powder volume?

  • @roadsweeper1

    @Voxelowo he does have a 50bmg, or did, but hasn't used it much since the accident. As for the 50cal vs the 416, that would be a good comparison. The 416 seems to have just the right balance of mass, muzzle velocity and kinetic energy, giving it insane penetration. But the 50bmg has significantly more powder behind it compared to the 416, 500, 600 or 700 nitro.

    Fun Fact: This used to be how the Presidential Limo's windows used to be made, but now they use a transparent hardened aluminum sheet and a fine titanium alloy wire weave that can withstand several bursts of .50 API straight on and is practically immune to any rifle rounds. It can even take RPG shots at a fairly shallow angle as well.

    Hey glass guy here, essentially the only thing stopping any of those rounds was the 1/8 lexan on the back end that’s designed to keep shards from projecting into the room that the glass is supposed to protect. If you shot the same spot twice you (obviously) would have got penetration……….. I’m surprised that half inch lexan couldn’t hold up to the 9mm, because I shot a piece of 1/4 lexan at 50 yards with no penetration. Love the videos, you’re a shimmer of light in a world so dim.

    As a retired engineer, I was wondering if the bullet proof glass was mounted in a solid frame that wouldn't move, if that 4 bore would have made it through? as the glass is unsupported, the impact of the projectile will "move the glass" thus absorbing some of the energy. Something to think about or maybe try out!!
