    Great stuff man! I bought a Fezzari La Sal Peak in early 2020 because I'm an "odd" size for bikes. I'm tall. The custom setup was excellent. I got a bike that fit ME and worked right out of the box. I think the bike industry, frame and component manufacturers , has really got to invest in this "entry level" price range. I bought my full suspension Giant Trance 4, which by todays standards is a crappy bike, in 2005 for $800 and it seemed like a fortune at the time. Spending under $1200 is a waste of money imho but, is a tough sell to a non mountain biker. I have watched my friends who want to get into mountain biking buy a "cheap" mountain bike for $500, thinking they have spent a fortune, and hated it.

    Excellent points! I have that conversation a lot with people who want to get into the sport. It's hard to tell someone that to fully enjoy the sport you gotta spend $1,500 but it's partially true. I bought a used Walmart bike for $40 years ago just to try it out. Did one ride on trails and absolutely hated it. The trails weren't bad...just the bike was. Weighed like 45 pounds, chain kept popping off, made horrible noises and my initial impression was this sport sucks. Years later when I decided to spend a bit more and try again...I enjoyed it so much more. I never want to discourage people from trying the sport who have a limited budget, but the old saying "buy it nice or buy it twice" comes to mind with cycling. Sorry for the long rant hhaha

  • @erraldstyler
    @erraldstyler2 жыл бұрын

    If i would be starting right now, with what i learned over 3 years and 3 bikes, i would buy that Polygon *right now*. The reason is the Deore 12s, this drivetrain is a dream, especially for the price of that bike, while the other specs are similar to the other, more expensive bikes. I wish i would have started on a bike with these specs! only 3 years ago! The 15x100 front is no big deal, if your going to upgrade the wheelset, you´re probably changing the fork, too. On the other hand, 15x100 used forks should be kinda cheap... I have a Polygon Siskiu T7 for close to a year now and im really happy with it ;) Main deciding factor was the Deore 12s. If you wanna go bikepark on a budget, or have a friend with an ebike to pull you up, get the Canyon ;) "hardcore hardtails" are special, but you also need to be a special kind of rider for them. theres a reason they called this "stoic", i have a Marin SQ1 and you really need to work it, up and down.

  • @CobraKyle

    @CobraKyle

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Matt! Glad to have you here! The only thing I don't love about the Kona is it uses open dropouts in the front and rear. At $1,200 that's a total deal breaker for me personally. It does offer a slightly more reputable fork than the bikes listed here, so that is also worth taking into consideration. For a new rider, those things probably don't matter as much, but without thru axles, it limits your parts choices if you damage a wheel or just want to upgrade as you grow. Best of luck in your bike search and I'm excited for you to start riding!

    Kona is a legendary brand, but be sure to get a bike with through-axles as Kyle said. Doesnt necessarily have to be boost (15x110f/12x148r), but most will be(industry standard). They are just way more durable and also have a proper upgrade path and availabilty of spares.

    Great question! I personally really enjoyed riding the Rocky Mountain Growler. I don't know if they sell it as a frame though? It certainly is a bit more downhill focused, but I didn't hate climbing with it. I also have a Salsa Timberjack that is really good at just about everything, but I find the frame to be too stiff. If you ride a lot of flow trails it would be excellent for that, but where I live it's very rocky and it just beats me up too much! I've found that a 65 - 66 degree head tube angle is the sweet spot (for me at least) for all round riding. Any steeper and riding downhill gets twitchy, and any slacker, it's a bit cumbersome to climb. Let me know what bikes you were thinking of too. I may have some more suggestions, but off the top of my head the Growler and Timberjack came to mind.

    @@Tyler-575 i have a SQ1 and a Polygon Siskiu T7 and i strongly recommend the Polygon from the said bikes. reason: 12s Deore, that drivetrain is a dream, also the main reason i decided on the Siskiu T7. The San Quentin 1 disqualifies itself with the QR141 rear hub, mine got toasted in an accident and i cant find any QR141 online here and im not willing to buy a DT Swiss with a QR spacer kit for a 800€ Bike with a garbage suntour coil fork which only works above 20 degrees celsius. Its literally stuck below 20c! To be honest, the SQ1 made me ride LESS. If you really want a *aggressive* cheap hardtail, get the canyon mentioned. But for a beginner on a budget, the polygon xtrada mentioned is unmatched imo. If you really want a SQ, get the 2 or better the 3. Its a special bike, but they really need to up the spec of the 1.

  • @zazu9117

    A lot of the stuff mentioned, that justify higher price, comes from marketing department and has very little to do with actual riding. If it would be possible to ride with eyes covered, most of experts could not tell the difference between tapper or straight tube etc. It is always "if you add just 200$ you can get...". After learning how the market function (decades ago), I say, if you add just 200$ you can buy another good bike. My last bike is old Specialized 26 XL frame, with 27.5 wheels, Fox boost fork 140mm, XT brakes etc. Price paid: 100 euros.

    Everything functions properly kzread.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of KZread. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

    Can you name a bike for $1,100 that is lightweight, and has high end components? I can't because it probably doesn't exist. Any bike at this price point has compromises. I recommend the PNW dropper post that I discussed in the video. Longest 27.2mm dropper on market currently, and I've always had good experiences with their products. It's cool if you aren't a fan of this bike, but realistically I think most bikes in this price range will suffer from some if not all the points you brought up.

    You talk about frame stiffness on a HARDTAIL and then you recommend a bike with QR axles? Have fun with it, the Polygon is the better bike for the money and it has a real upgrade path.

    @@erraldstyler do People not realize that the qr skewer is only there to clamp the wheel? These a larger diameter axle in there that is making the connection to the frame/fork

    Nice video. My Xtrada 7 came with tubeless ready 2.35's. Super happy with it.

    Thank you! That's interesting yours came with tubeless ready tires. Probably due to parts shortage they put on what was available. Which tires did it come with?

    @@CobraKyle my t7 (in germany) came on Hans Dampfs, some people (in australia i think) complained about their bikes coming with VeeTire Crown (hate those xd) or something. I can understand the complaining, but it´s probably really due to the lack of availability for parts... (try finding a deore 12s cassete lol)

    @@sergeantbear Fantastic, but I do have an aftermarket fork and a dropper and stuff on it. Great bike stock, but I wanted to enhance it.
