I did the Rbc Avion card with ion+ and do the transfer thing for a few years and when you start paying annual fees $120 for Avion and $48 for ion+ the saving diminishes down to a way lower value then in order to actually see good value you start spending more on more expensive flights (travel options whatever you like) in order to see the value. That’s more than the average person needs to do. A $30 CAA bike program to get .3$ per litre off then either armies card for extra .2 to .7$ off depends on gas type or Marriott business at 3% points on gas or Scotia rewards program has better deals then Avion with shorter duration and less work.

You're missing a huge one tbh. Airmiles with the shell app + CAA combined gets me over 10c/l discount per fill plus about 20$ in airmiles points per month. That's 240$ in airmiles points + 10c a liter discount for every fill. I cant see anything even coming close.

My nearest COOP gas station is 5x on everything you purchase from the store including lottery and gas when using the AMEX Cobalt. Combined with their COOP membership card rebate per year. It’s a crazy combo. I hope their store coding doesn’t change.

As an existing CIBC customer, using that divident platinum has been great. Plus, if you have 5k in a chequing account with them or 100k invested, they’ll waive the annual fee on the card. I’m able to use that card on food where places don’t accept cobalt. Underrated card for sure

5k in bank account is always moot because you can make the annual fee back on interest with the 5k in something else

@@brettbr815 Yep, that's where they get you. They make you think you're getting a good deal (no annual fee for visa and no monthly fee for chequing acct) but you're missing out on 200-300 bucks that you would have made if you put that 6k (it's up from 5k) in a HISA. Quite the high effective annual fee if you ask me for only 3% back on gas and groceries, especially when there are free cards that can get you at least 2%. Plus, you're bound to fall under the 6k threshold at least once or twice a year by accident and you'll get dinged 30 bucks plus tax each time that happens. There goes your whole "advantage" with this card.

It's pretty clear(and a shady thing that they're doing) they're only showing off cards that they get a referral bonus from. Canadian Tire MC and the weekly "Fill up 25 L and get $ in CT Money" is an amazing way to get a high cashback for gas. They also didn't even mention the fact that you can link your Triangle rewards to your Petro Canada account and earn points for both of them at the same time. They also don't mention you can link your non-RBC credit card to Avion Rewards and earn you can earn Avion Rewards at Petro Canada. It's also weird how they didn't really go into mentioning that Jourine Rewards are 1:1 for Aeroplan points so you're getting a minimum of $3 back for every 300 litres of gas and you get free snacks and Air Canada Travel Vouchers when you hit 75 pts and 150 pts before you reach 300 pts and get 300 Aeroplan points.

Airline and hotel programs can offer outsized rewards relative to cashback. However, there is a learning curve to maximizing value with airline and hotel programs. Cashback and fixed value points programs can be rewarding as well. Anything is better than using cash, debit, or a no rewards card!
