7 years later and you're still helping people out. I was searching EVERYWHERE for a cohesive video, because all of them either had the engine taken out or would cut the video at the most important part (hard to reach bolt). I was on day 2 of wrestling with this old Ford explorer and your video finally fixed that. Thank you!

You saved my A$$ one more time!! Over a year ago, I watched your video to help me change the starter in my Red 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition with 230,000+ miles. Today, I changed the starter in my son's black 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition with 226,000 miles - and once again... I watched this video to help give me the confidence / smarts I needed for the job. However, this time, getting the starter out was a B^TCH!! The whole job took almost seven hours (including trips to O'Reilly's) but we won! Corroded / frozen bolts and electrical leads...the northeast salt / snow destroys the underside of everything. Thanks again!

Got a used one from a guy who just was driving by who had one at home locally! He came back with it, I got soaked but got it on! Them bolts...especially that top one! UGH!!! Two hours later...I made 4 new friends...and did not take a dime. Feels good to help others.

super helpful good video and explanation good job e thanks!!!
Very helpful video. I was not able to see or touch the upper bolt. I used a 3/8 drive 12 point, 13mm shallow socket And a 6" wobble extension. I was able to carefully feel my way onto the top bolt simply holding the female end of the extension. As you did, once it was on the bolt, I attached the ratchet. Note that I had difficulty getting the nut off the ground wire. There was not enough clearance between the nut and the starter for anything but a thin walled, 3/8 drive, 13mm shallow socket. The ratchet could not connect without a 1" to 2" wobble extension. Thanks again for your very clear instructions and video work.

Good video brother Thank you
Just replaced the starter on my old 2003 4.6l Ford Explorer that I use for plowing, this helped. I think something is a little tighter on the Explorer though, could not get to the top bolt from underneath, had to take the passenger tire to get at that. There was some framing or support IIRC that curves in near the top of the starter so couldn't squeeze an extension in and have it go from bolt to past the starter to ratchet, had to use a 2-4" inch long socket instead and ratchet from a gap behind the tire.
Hello, I found an easy way to put the starter back into my 1997 Ford Expedition 4x4. I hope this will work for you also. I took a strong string and tied it under the head of the bolt, then I put the other end of the string through the socket and then put my extention into the socket which keeps the string tont. I then put the bolt with the socket and extention through the top bolt hole on the starter and slipped the starter back into its housing. By matching the bottom hole where it goes, the top bolt just slipps in. It is tight for a person with big hands, but it works really well. It took me about 5 min. to get the starter in and tightened down.

Sir, Thanks for the inspiration.. I removed my starter last week and put in the new one.. I'm no mechanic.. I've done a few projects on my truck.. 03 expedition.. this project was the most difficult.. to date I've changed all my coils and plugs, installed rear rotors and pads, install a new fuse box, recently I installed new alternator, and alternator wiring harness, new engine belt, two new idle pulleys, removed and cleaned tension pulley.. I'm motivated by the cost of having this work done by someone else who will not give the attention that I would give. I'm having a problem with the ground wire on the starter the outer bolt is seized .. some how I managed to get it off but it is not going back on.... The inner nut turns opposite of the outter nut so the outter nut is seized any thoughts on getting the outter nut loose?.. I do have a 13mm thin open wrench to hold the inner nut..
@FixingWithPassion
7 жыл бұрын
Take a wrench....what ever size the nut is....get the wrench and grind it down some to fit into the nut you want to stop turning. I know it pretty narrow fit... Then lossen the outer nut by holding the wrench on the nut that was turning. That's what I did.

I’ve been troubleshooting a no start issue with my Expedition El for about a month. She stopped in my front yard after unloading supplies from Home Depot fist I got the rapid blinking theft light, check all fuses trying everything and still just don’t want it to be the starter. Every checkEd everything. I check the voltage at the solenoid and it’s good even light tested it going to try and jump the starter with a screw driver this am if it doesn’t work them]n I’m dropping the starter...ugh. Thank you for the video. I’ll watch again to count how many bolts and their exact sizes I think you said 11 and 13... 2 extensions.

Ah, you changed the transmission, well that explains why the lines are loose and bolts missing from the pan. Taikuu for the video, I've done it many years ago, but things change, and I'm wearing a much older man's clothes.
Thanks for the video! Going to be doing this tomorrow it looks like. It's been hard to start, and the negative terminal is heating up pretty bad when I try to start.. looked online it said the starter was going.. All signs seem to point to the starter.

Man,, 'I've been a shop mechanic for my 62 years and can not get to that top bolt after having gotten all three loose. Air ratchet, both 1/4 and 3/8, now this is on a 2006, F150, 5.4, 4x4. I have the top bolt loose and the other two out and cant get to the top one to get it out. I have every tool made almost. Perhaps I need to install one of the lower bolts to get the starter back into place to get to the already loose top one.?? I have gigantic hands and arms which doesn't help at all with this. I'll try using the two 3 inch extensions and deep well 13 together like you did,, and will let you know if it works. I don't seem to have the same room as your Expedition, but I'll again. Don't even want to tell ya how long I've tried to get to this top bolt,, and failed ! Great video, and I'll send ya A little thank you something, through Pay Pal, if your address is listed below, if your way works

Wonderful video and explanation! Thank you! Have you ever had an issue with the flywheel eating starters up? I’ve had two starters on my 1998 Expedition now and both of them have started with whirring and no turn over after just a month of having them on. Ford mechanic said it might be the flywheel teeth that are worn down then & currently have appointment to check it out in the next few weeks.

yeah, it's either That or Something is Out of Line or Not making good contact with your Starter and Fly Wheel. like one is too small for it or something. (wrong size fly wheel Ect.) just a Thought buddy
what if that third hard to reach bolt is missing? I replaced the starter motor and only 2 of the 3 bolts were used. I doubt oil will leak, but maybe dirt might make its way in there.
Thank you helped a lot. Still managed to get a months worth of cursing out of the way.
I'm 51 yrs old and changed a lot of starters over the years (mainly GM) but this starter on my 99 f150, 4.6 was a total bitch to change. Hope new one last awhile, don't want to do this again no time soon, lol, good luck to u all attempting this job. Like this guy said, have patience, and I say have a lot of patience...
I don't know man. You must have the patience of Jobe. Taking this starter out and there's not even anything wrong with it. My 2001 Explorer Sport wont' turn over today. I'm hoping I'll be able to fix it with the old; tap it with a hammer method. If not I'm not sure I want to tackle trying to replace it. First working on cars has never been my favorite pastime. I have done several repairs over the years; replaced alternators, gas tanks, carburetor's. Mostly on Porsche's. Trying to save a buck; but I've gotten older now and just don't have the stamina or desire anymore. Great video though. If I decide to try it you've explained it very well. Thanks

My husband removed the starter and had it tested. Now when the starter is placed back in position and the starter is seated to mesh the gears to the flywheel, only one bolt hole lines up. The other 2 are off by about 1/16 of an inch. Is there some way to turn the starter gears or flywheel to rotate the starter so the bolt holes line up?
I'm having to replace my Aunt's Starter on her 2004 Ford Expedition Four-Wheel Drive,. and they made sure that they put everything that they possibly could right in the stinking way of every boat under there! including a skid plate, and the brake line assembly Union under there is right where you can't even get your hands up in there! and this is her only vehicle! the starter itself cost right at $300 made out of platinum I guess, Oh, Joy! Joy! Joy!! Especially That STUPID TOP BOLT!! it's like I have to disassemble half of the freaking SUV under there just to get to it!! ugh!! I Tell ya, if it was my job to replace these for A Living, I'd Quit! and Find another line of Work!! picking up and Selling Aluminum Cans Or Something!!! Not A Fun Chore At ALL!! Damn &*÷×#@!!!! JUNKER Anyway!!!!

Ok, your directions are not workable on an Explorer/Mountaineer. There is even less space on these vehicles. But I did succeed on my 2004 V8 4x4 Explorer. The trick is to use a 3/8 13mm flex socket and a 6-7 inch extension. You need to angle the extension outboard to clear the motor mount... Once you break the bolt free, I then swap the ratchet for a round ratchet to spin it out by hand. Harbor freight sells a 1/4 3/8 1/2 inch set for about $10 One key thing I learned the hard way was to leave the bottom bolt in for last. This makes it much easier to take out the top/back bolt. I also advise you to chase the bolt and bellhousing threads and oil them up before you put it all back together. This makes it go together much easier.
