2008 Ford Expedition 4x4 starter removal EASY WAY!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

EASY WAY to remove and reinstall the starter on the 2008 Expedition Limited with 4 wheel drive. This vehicle has the 5.4L engine and can be a complete pain to R&R the starter. I have some tips for you that will make this repair much easier. You won't have to remove the wheel or the wheel well. I have a lift but this procedure would work just as well if you were working with jacks and Jack stands. I hope you find this useful.

OMG!! This TIP is worth MONEY!! I am a Do-It-Yourselfer who gets by with some good common sense, observation skills, and the occasional DESTROYING of the thing I am trying to do! I was under that car ALL DAY yesterday bewildered by the small space. My Mind DID tell me to try to take the Solenoid off as a possibility. However, I did not know if I would have damaged a brand new start if I did. So, I avoided it! THIS Video has DEFINITELY given me the answer. Thank you so much!! I will now go under my car with a SMILE because I now have the knowledge to win this little WAR with the Starter!... And, Ford!! Lol!

This is great idea when you installing it back in. Here’s my tip when you taking bad starter out On bottom of the starter you have two 10mm bolts First start to unscrew top bolt keep in my these bolts are very long you won’t be able to slide it out Two start to unbolt 2nd 10mm bolt more than likely you should be able to slide this bolt out. Three start to wiggle black or back part of the starter. It will simply come apart. Now you have east access to top bolt good luck 👍🏻

I can’t thank you enough for this video. Instead of using a hook I removed the rubber plug and used my piece of coat hanger to push and hold the fork out. Then replaced the plug. 3.5 hours lying on my back in the mud the day after hurricane Ida passed right over the top of it in Houma LA. 103°F

This video is 100% correct. I just completed this job on a 2010 Expedition 4wd. No way to do it without removing the Starter Solenoid. Lucky for me I found this video. Thank you my friend.

Thank you for this video. I had my starter die on vacation and was able to replace it thanks to your video. Getting the solenoid fork in the right position after installing the starter was tricky but eventually we got it with my son turning the flywheel. I can't imagine getting that top bolt out or in with the solenoid in place. You hit all the key things to look for when doing this repair. Thanks again!

Tony, thank you for the video. I was too gun-shy to remove the solenoid (not enough experience) but your video helped me look at the job from another point of view. If your Expedition is 4X4, you will never get the top bolt out unless you're real MF'n patient. I tried six or eight different approaches before finally getting the right angle with both hands and my forearms wedged up in there. Then, the ratchet (I highly recommend ¼" drive) only had about a 2" travel. I GOT THAT SUMBITCH! It took a bit to ratchet that bolt back in but, I got it done. No way to torque it to specs so fingers crossed. If that bolt was easily accessible, I'd have had it done in 1-1½hrs. Instead, it took me four. Once I got that top bolt back in, the rest was a cinch. Good luck everyone!

Thank you! This worked out very well. I had to remove the new starter once I had it bolted up because the solenoid fork would not extend, and the gear kept hitting the flywheel. When I put it back on for the 2nd time, I made sure to wrangle it around so the fork would extend all the way.

Amen, that worked perfectly. THANK YOU! I found on the install I didn't need to remove the solenoid- I used the grease trick to keep the nut in the socket and used an 8 inch flexible extension to turn the bolt in.

Your advice saved me. I spent a couple hours trying to get at the top bolt between the frame and the exhaust manifold using swivel joints and extensions while cursing Ford engineers but to no avail. Not only did removal of the solenoid provide the access to the top bolt but it also showed the root cause of the starter failure in the first place. I owe you big time. My many thanks.

𝙏𝙤𝙣𝙮'𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩! This is the only way to do it. When you get the solenoid off you can reach up, grope around and put a deep socket on the top bolt. Then snap on a stubby short handled ratchet. It will spin right off. You can reinstall the new starter with just two bolts like the dealers do who charge $1800 for this job. Use a Chinese Advance Auto Parts starter and you can do it again every six months.

Thanks for the tip. Only thing I'd add regarding the solenoid is I had to push and pull the "fork" in and out about 15 times, yanking it out as hard as i could with a hook tool. It finally came out far enough to get the solenoid in behind the fork.

When it's in the vehicle and you pull the fork back the flywheel may not be in a position for the drive gear to engage the flywheel. If you turn the engine by hand a tiny bit, the gear will skip right in.

The Bendix in the starter should line up the teeth easily. The beveled starter gear should turn backwards effortlessly to line up and engage with the flywheel.

The top bolt can be done with two swivel joints and several extentions. Its not too difficult but takes patience. The passenger wheel does need to come off too. I had to change starter several times in a matter of 2 months. Note: the top bolt MUST be removed first other wise if the two easy bolts are removed first the weight of the starter will not allow you to undo the top bolt. Advice: always do the hard one first.

I want to respectfully disagree with you. I've done this job every way you can do it and removing the solenoid is by far the easiest way. You are correct that a bunch of extensions and swivels can do the job (if you don't mind cussing a lot) but the logistics of all that rig are unwieldy. To each his own...

Make sure the teeth are meshing correctly. You may have to hand turn the engine a Tiny little bit one way or the other for the Bendix to engage correctly.
