4.5 Whipple blower on LS 427

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is an engine done for Graham Carter in New Zealand.
This was originally set up as a street pump gas and race gas combo, but changed to race only. It still has low compression so it is Not a max effort deal.

At the end of the pull, I saw a header leak. Go back and watch the pull . at the right front and the left rear of the engine. Doesn't matter to much though with those torque and power numbers. Thanks man, I appreciate you. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Jeremy in Alabama

I should preface this with a huge thanks to your SteveTech series, love that super nerdy deep dive into engine tech. Loved the whole dyno absorber videos, mad respect for ALL Steve Morris videos. A tongue in cheek rip on the intro to the vids would be a totally badass shirt, to me anyways. That nasty vortec style blow through centrifugal charger deal was right up my dream street. That 1998 chevy k1500 in my driveway would get to 95 so fast.....lmao....the 4l60e would also polish them clutches to a pristine shine before the truck even moved....but that 1150 pump gas(I think that's right?) Is screaming bad financial choice everyday for me. Id totally drive a blown daily driver janky truck. Especially if I win the lottery, first thing would be slapping a huge as I can find 8:71 or even 10:71 blower just to send the rods on their final ride. Hypereutectics really like impact loading right guys? Lmao "His name is Steve. This is a typical drag race deal...." Or "This is Steve Morris racing engines, stand back I built this absorber myself...." Lmao. Id totally buy a set(as long as it was a pocket t-shirt) for work. Either the coworkers gonna learn who Steve is or they are gonna be confused as per usual.

Be cool if wipple made a gearbox with interchangeable gear ratios. So the belt drive stays @ 1:1 and to get more or less boost you swap the gears out. Then you have a nice big 8 or 10 inch dia 10 rib pulley ob the blower end. Should help the belt slip issue. Probably look funny though.

The belt was off the supercharger pully at around 6500 rpm. looked like it was traping air under the belt between the pulley and belt. Might need air bleeds in the bottom of each v in the pully to let air escape.

Seems like the 15 psi run is the sweet spot for the blower drive. 20 is okay, but that drop off at 7600-ish must be drive issues since it’s not there at 15 psi. 25 psi just makes it worse… Maybe some more ribs on the serpentine belt? Just wondering, you ARE the man with this stuff!

I wonder if with the bigger PD blowers a tighter LSA would demand the full boost level earlier. Steve comments that it buillds making me think the cam is more of a soft bottom mid and up cam. On my Hellcat im going with s ported 4.5 which should help topend at the 20-23lb range and i will be using a cam with relatively tight LSA to keep the low end and lower midrange nasty💪 its a manual

After seeing that I have got to put a GoPro under the hood of my car I have a Paxton blower in my Mustang the belt is much shorter but I didn’t think it could possibly stretch that much under load I’ve always hated spring loaded tensioners but it looks like you would have to have that belt guitar string tight when the engine is not running just to keep it on the pulley under full load I have a question is that a Kevlar belt I can’t remember what brand mine is but it is definitely not supposed to stretch like that

The belt is slipping. Positioning and redesigning the tensioner, and adding a gas shock to it should rectify the problem.

Nice job getting it to run! But I couldn’t imagine how a regular guy, even with decent tuning experience, would ever make this blower combo run right! If Steve had to fight with it & no one has as much boosted tuning experience as him! Very few people would get it to work! Now ship 🚢 it today, before the guy changes his mind! 😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Isn’t it possible the motor laying over at the end of the pull is caused by belt slip because at the end it looks like the belt is coming right over the top of the pulley barely touching it and wouldn’t a manually adjusted tensioner seriously help the situation I’ve only ever had trouble with those spring loaded tensioners on my Paxton I went back to the manual tensioner that the blower came with and belt slip disappeared after that

Mr Steve , can you run a small turbo on say like my 2017 5.3. 11:1 compression.or would create to much compression and hurt it .

  • @CP110

    @CP110

    2 жыл бұрын

a small turbo is going to spool up quickly and make a ton of torque down low, that's a lot to ask out of a high compression motor with stock rods. Put a turbo that has, a bit of lag, have good engine management so you can be a bit conservative on timing and use high octance fuel/e85 and a thicker headgasket if they make one to try to lower the compression a bit.

Curious why you haven’t moved to the marine inlet in the back which allows more air. I think at this point the 170mm inlet is too small. They also developed a new tensioner pulley for race applications that deal with the slip issue. ATI and Bully Tuned are making north of 1,600hp with 388/427 engines.

  • @KTger

@@KingJT80 The Marine inlet isn’t just used for boats, it’s used in all out racing applications because it allows enough CFM that would otherwise be restricted by the 170mm inlet. 4.5 Whipples flow enough air to support north of 1,800hp.

Wonder what the blower speed is at 25lbs and 7800rpm😵‍💫. You need to port the blower at a minimum. That kind if boost and rpm on a 427 needs a big centrifugal or turbo

These serpentine deals always seem to be an issue on the dyno, I bet the first graph would look a lot nicer without the belt slippage. (look at how much the tensioner is taking up the slack at the end of the run) I've dealt with this issue a few times on the dyno myself. PITA!
