Walking away from a purchase you don’t need feels better than buying a sketchy mystery, good call. Even at $1500 it sounds high just for KZread content. I may be wrong but I believe whenever an air bag is activated that will make the car a total. I like your description of the typical life of these cars.

Seeing all these high mileage, beaten on, and even a 180k+ mile poorly maintained ZN6 I'm really happy to see these cars be super reliable after 10+ years in existence. While I may not have picked the safest daily (people suck at driving in Austin, TX) it is the most engaging and reliable daily I have ever owned.

So true! Never trust anyone when buying a big ticket item like a vehicle or a house. Always do your do diligence and have it looked over thoroughly. I recently went and looked at a truck, and at first overview it looked good, till I drove it and the transmission slipped so bad I was surprised it still moved. No need to connect my fancy scanner. I just walked away.

I live in near Atlanta, am middle aged, and have a BRZ. It’s my midlife crisis car😆. There are lots of BRZ, FRS and 86s in the Suburbs of Atlanta. I know what u mean about modded and beat on by the younger crowd. All the kids around here do it. That’s why mine is mostly stock. I had a Modded out stage 3 Dodge SRT-4 in the late 2000’s and learned a vital lesson with that car. The more you tighten the rubber band the easier it is for the band to snap. That car spent more time in the shop than on the road. If u want a fast car, buy a fast car from the factory. If your car isn’t fast enough, trade it in for a fast car stock out of the gate. If u can’t afford the fast car you can’t afford it. You’ll be spending that money you can’t afford on tow bills Parts and repair bills. Especially if u rely on that car for basic transportation. I’ll be selling my BRZ to my son when he turns 16 this year. He’s a responsible kid, but I’m still just hoping I don’t regret my decision and that he takes my lessons to heart.

Would be a good buy for me. Looking to build a track car to run HPDE with NASA, if it was just the engine, the bodywork would not be worth dealing with, there are plenty of other brz, frs, and 86 with bad motors and no body work. Still might be a good build for the right price. Especially if it has a title, most track cars are unable to be driven on the road because they have been totaled.

Depending on what you really want to do with the car, it wasn't a terrible price, but it was a solid choice to walk away. The one thing I disagreed on is the replaced clutch before 100k miles on this car. The replacement clutch is actually a good thing for a FRS/BRZ since it likely means they replaced the throw out bearing for the clutch. They tend to fail around 40-60k miles and most people decide to replace the clutch while the trans has to be pulled.

I got a 05 forester xs 170k miles that has been pretty well maintained with regular oil at the dealer. I'm starting to worry about getting the head gaskets replaced as when i changed the spark plugs they were pretty smeared with oil from the valve covers leaking. As well as some oil from the engine block from around the oil filter. Anything I can do to prolong them or should I be thinking about taking it in as soon as possible? Also thought about following your head gasket change vid with the engine still in. But never did that much wrenching on a car before. Car never over heats and runs great except for some bouncy suspension! Thanks for your help.

I do not recommend going to look at a car with a basic code reader. It’s all too common for just about anyone selling a car with a Check Engine light to simply clear that light before showing the car to anyone. If you know what you’re looking at when it comes to a scan tool then maybe you can determine if the emissions monitors are incomplete, indicating it was recently cleared. I’d recommend instead using a more sophisticated scanner that can read Live Data. I know all Subarus made in the last 15 years (and probably many other makes) will actually report how long the engine has been running and how long it’s been driven since the Check Engine light was last cleared. If I’m looking at a used car and my scanner shows the codes were just cleared a couple miles ago, it’s a strong hint that the seller is trying to hide a problem.
