I feel that this is what the Switch was missing to me. Make no mistake, the Switch's minimalistic approach to its menus and features were deliberately designed to make getting into games as quick and efficient as possible, and I know many really prefer that approach of "no fluff", but I think what makes the 3DS (and to an extension the Wii U) so special in hindsight beyond just their game library is how much charm and personality was packed into it. Stuff like StreetPass, AR Cards, Face Raiders, and Swapnote showed how much Nintendo wanted the experience to be as memorable as possible even if you weren't playing the games you bought for the system. Sure, you can just chalk these up to glorififed tech-demos just to show what the 3DS can do and that they had little to no substance, but I always saw them as small breathers I would engage with if I wanted a break from a game I was playing. I have my doubts, but I do hope the Switch successor takes some inspiration from the 3DS and Wii U and experiments with cool apps and features. Maybe a more visually intersting UI with music/ambiance (that includes the eShop and Mii Maker too).

Agreed. Its all that charm and character that also is what makes these consoles standout from just owning a pc, or in 3ds's case just buying an all in one emulator handheld.

It’s not necessary at all, but it really does add that Nintendo character to the console itself. Gave you something to do if you were like me and bought systems without being able to afford a game too lol. Hoping the next one just has a bit more pizzazz and sauce, or at the very least better customization features…

I actually dont think the Switch needed this at all. Nintendo went too far with a home console with a bloaty OS with the WiiU. You could get a college degree in the time it took to boot up Mario Kart 8. All just so you can see a bunch of Miis vibing on the home screen With the hardware the Switch had at the time, a super minimalist UI was the perfect solution IMO. They probably couldve at least done PNG static theme backgrounds though 🤷‍♂️

Never forget when I used the notes app to get autographs from the Brazilian voice actors of Goku and Ash Ketchum because I met them and had nothing to be signed but my sweet reliable portable 3DS

I love seeing GVG titles that are just the most niche and unthinkable topics ever and going “yup, that’s a Jon video.”

Heck, even if the video isn't involved Jon, I tend to read the descriptions in his voice.

It’s a good thing throughout this video the amiibos in the back remain perfectly upright and stationary!

Jon has THE BEST voice of any human ever born. You can’t convince me otherwise.

I love how Jon's videos have simultaneously gotten more chaotic but also more casual as time goes on

Streetpass Quest / Find Mii actually had really good music! I still love the boss battle themes.

I like how your Amiibo simulates an actual battlefield. 🙂

The 3DS remains my favorite console of all time due to these features! I really hope the ‘Switch 2’ takes a handful of notes from the 3DS, because the Switch just feels so lackluster and boring in comparison…

Enjoyed the video, I was smiling the whole time. Just a reminder, how special the 3DS was and Nintendo's magic.

When I took a Level Design class in college, one of the games we made levels for was Excitebike. I never heard of the game before then, but I had blast with it the moment we started playing it.

You can also make stop-motion animated films with your 3DS camera! I had a lot of fun playing with that!

This intro is why i f'n love Jon lol You should knock one additional amiibo over every video someone comments about it

The 3D camera is totally underrated. I love the 3D pictures I've taken over the years. Snow globes, figures, etc. So cool to have these things in 3D. Depending on the subject, there was potential of definitely taking amazing 3D pictures. Really wish there was an HD 3DS, w/upgraded HD 3D screens and cameras. Would be very cool.

I forgot how awesome the Sound app on 3DS was. I used to listen to music and play with the Visualizers a lot before Mario 3D Land & Mario Kart 7 came out

I bought my 3DS used years after launch. No one really talked about the AR cards much so it was a lot time before I knew what I didn't have.

I skipped out on early 3DS when Capcom canceled Mega Man Legends 3. I ended up getting a Majora's Mask new 3DS in 2015 and had a lot of games to catch up with. It was a blast to play then and I am still finding new stuff to enjoy with 3DS.

I remember spending so much time just completing my AR fish collection.

When I was young I spent HOURS trying to beat the final boss in Face Raiders… I wish more consoles had more built-in content like this though, closest thing we’ve had recently is Astro’s Playroom.

I had no idea about the visualizer feature on thr Music player. I actaually used the music player a little. But the Activity Log and StreetPass are still sorely missed. I went to university in 2013 so it. was the perfect time for streetpasses. I got every puzzle and beat most of the games. I never knew why they didnt at least make a phone app for it.

Kingdom Hearts 3D also had AR cards for the dream eaters, they also had a lot of pretty strong ones that you could recruit for free, and I'm pretty sure you could use the cards to have your Dream eaters in reality, in a much closer approximation to Pokemon Go's AR.

You are such a great storyteller and I followed you from NL because your videos are just the best. Cheers.

Just wanted to say I really appreciated this vid. I immediately went and found my (new) 3DS box to see if there were any AR cards inside. Of course there was so I played with them and the other apps that I never bothered to open with glee for quite a while actually! My hat is off to you, Sir 🙂/🎩

We really need a StreetPass equivalent for the next switch. This was so awesome

24:01 Excite Truck would translate well to a regular analog stick. I did that using my Switch controller, a budget one with no motion capabilities, and it works surprisingly well. Just tilt the analog stick as you would a Wiimote and you'll have all the same control. You can map the Wiimote motion to an analog stick in Dolphin itself, so with the Switch capabilities, it would make a great conversion as you'd be able to use motion or analog stick, and there can be a setting you can change to do it.

I never thought about the AR games in the 3DS like the precursor to Pokémon Go before. We don't know the timeline so it's all speculation, but Nintendo is always researching new technologies so they can find the best opportunity to use them in the future

I bought a Japanese 3DS last year (close to when the eShop was about to close down), and even though I downloaded a bunch of games on it, i ended up using it as a camera for the most part.

The play history... I still love that. Just wish it didn't have a limit on the number of games / demos.

Speaking of the AR cards, I’ve gotten into printing out jumbo versions on 4x6 card stock and laminating them in holofoil! So far I have the stock ones and jumbo ones for Bravely Default

I remember finding the AR thing cool for a good 20 minutes. And of course the 3D-without-glasses thing was revolutionary. I NEVER played a game without 3D on.

Really missed this stuff on Switch, so much to do even without games on the system

As the owner of several 3DS family consoles, it's nice to see the recognition of some less used features. I absolutely loved StreetPass and was the office go to for strange short colors.

I remember the 3DS marketing had a slogan something like “Endless Fun, Right Rut of the Box”. The fun wasn’t endless, but I definitely had fun with all these games early in the 3DS era when I was a kid. I remember thinking the lack of big launch titles wasn’t a problem at first but pretty quickly feeling the lack of cool things to play. I may not have spent 20 hours in Face Raiders or AR games, but I thought they were really cool and played through them a few times.

23:37 my hottest take is that Excitebots is the better arcade racer on the Wii despite it's bafflingly limited release. Also Excitebike/VS. continues to be some of my most played games on NSO, before F-Zero 99 came out I really wanted to see an Excitebike 99

I always thought these AR card games were neat, but I never really delved that deep into them cuz, well, I got 3D Land with my 3DS so... Priorities lol But yeah, I never knew there was that much more to them! I did use 3DS Sound A LOT though, cuz my phone at the time was rubbish, so I listened to music on my 3DS instead

3DS Sound wasn’t at the top of my activity log, but 3DS/DSi actually was my mp3 player along with some dodgy dollar store device until I got a smartphone in 2014. And iirc most of it was Selena Gomez, SpongeBob songs, Daft Punk and other things I’d rather not admit I listened to as a snot nose 😂
