Nail, primer, and primary explosive compound. Proper fitment is critical to prevent tube detonation. Also incorporates a safety pin for handling, the whole detonator unscrews with a wrench in case there is need for safe transportation.

@@MrGunman11 on this design it's all from extremely tight interference fitment there are sheer ribs in place on the impactor. It takes nothing short of a direct hammer blow to set one of these off when the safety pin is removed. As a precaution we have fired all ammunition from a foxhole. The rockets however have pyro armed inertial fuses and setback armed (inertial) fuses with blocking pins and counterweights those are in my shorts.

I had only 6 rounds made up for the shotgun and we fired many of them off camera. I had a ton of compressed air rounds made though. The compressed air ammunition is of substantially lighter construction. I'm going to make exclusively shotgun ammo for the next trip and it will be frag ammunition. I'm producing it now (minus the explosive materials of course)

So with this design, if you were just shooting printed projectiles and cans out of it rather than actual explosives, would it still need to be classified as a destructive device, or would it just essentially fall into the same class as the can cannon?

Its really hard to say. Some say its a large bore destructive device. But it is Black Powder and it is muzzle loading and it doesn't fire fixed ammunition. However, the ATF likes to freely interpret their own laws so to be safe I had us do final assemly and fabrication at Ordnance Lab. If you never fired explosive rounds you may be ok. But I'm not a lawyer.

My understanding is that even if the launcher is a DD(arguable in this case), the ammo isn't unless it has over 1/4oz of explosive (not the lift charge)

We tested flash and nitrocellulose based fillers and they both worked. We know from testing and experience our detonator design will work just as reliably on H.E. fillers in the future.

@DandSCreations thanks! I was surprised by the "lack" of craters and wondered how much had to do with filler and how much was from the lighter projectile not making it into the dirt at all. That texas clay can get pretty hard I hear.

I think it had to be solely your ammunition as the AFT doesn't regulate air rifles as those come in both large bore (.72) and with giggle switch options as well as shoulder fired air cannons in the tree industry being legit (seach: APTA treestuff) and those are at least 1.5" bore. I also seem to remember that air rifles are excluded precisely because they are not a FIREarm- no explosion to launch the projectile.
