3D Printed Functional Roller Coaster - Stunt Fall
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This functional scale model of the iconic Giant Inverted Boomerang took almost 3 years to design, print and build. The train is powered through the whole track by a single DC motor; resulting in a very realistic ride sequence!
More than 1500 parts were individually printed, resulting in a model of 1.8 meters wide and 1.2 meters tall. Two Arduino controllers make sure that the roller coaster works as intended. The landscaping, including trees, the queue line, and decorative elements, brings the scale model to life.
This project enabled me to combine two hobbies: roller coasters and 3D printing. The whole process of designing, printing and building was very fun but taught me some very valuable lessons as well. Implementing a mechanism to power the train realistically was one of the biggest challenges I faced.
Many thanks to everyone who followed this project along!
---------------------------------------------------
Some features of this scale model:
• Gates will open and close when the train is in the station;
• The loading platform lowers when dispatching the train;
• Pulleys start to rotate when the train is lifted to the highest point;
• The train is actuated through the whole layout by a thin thread. This thread is actuated by a DC motor which is controlled by a Arduino controller;
• 6 (reed) sensors in the track keep an eye where the train is, so that it can adjust its speed according to the layout.

Man! I love how the speed isnt ridiculous too like most Knex roller coasters. It actually has a realistic speed

Fun fact: it was the original idea to let it work on gravity, just like almost all other (scale model) coasters. This resulted in too many problems, however, so I switched to this technique. As far as I know, this is the only design where this can be applied since all curves are bent inwards! (and so the cable stays where it belongs to be)
@keiyakins
Жыл бұрын
That's probably because it's not actually a roller coaster. It's closer to a cable car with a twisty layout, you can see the cable loop inside. If it *were* actually a roller coaster it'd have that problem, because scaling is kinda weird.
@MRCoasters
Жыл бұрын
@@keiyakins Exactly! But I rather still call it a roller coaster ;-)
@keiyakins
Жыл бұрын
@@MRCoasters I mean, isn't a roller coaster by definition gravity powered?
@MRCoasters
Жыл бұрын
@@keiyakins Well, it’s arguable, there certainly exists “powered coasters” which are not gravity powered, but classified as roller coasters as well. Besides that, I would call this scale model a roller coaster for sure, because it’s based on a real one which certainly relies on gravity 😉 The technique I’ve implemented is only a tool to make it more realistic
Holy smokes! Such attention to detail! Even down to accurate station gates and the valley platforms to recover riders due to frequent valley issues will all coasters of this type. Operates just like the GIB coasters, too!

@@dustinhenderson7507 Good question; I just really liked the color combination, the compactness of the coaster, the complexity in technique and just...because this ride is absolutely epic! 😎

Parque warner madrid would be proud for this one
Just coming across this now, what an awesome quality printed assembly and the killer video/audio edits made this such a good watch
This is one Awesomest Roller Coaster build

Insanely cool! Vekoma invert boomerangs are so aestheticly pleasing, makes me want to ride Aftershock at Silverwood again!

Always thought of having powered trains on a model track, but thought it would be impossible. Great execution!

You're right to a certain extent concerning the technique I've implemented now. Because all tracks bend inwards, the cable is "pulled" into the track. If I would have any track parts bending in the other direction, the cable would come out of the track, resulting in all kinds of issues.
You did what Vecoma isnt able to... A smooth Boomerang! :D
@MRCoasters

Haha, but have you ever done a GIB? Those are relatively smooth!
Well crafted coaster and video….slick editing/slomo!!!

I like the color scheme as well! That’s one of the reasons I chose for Stunt Fall (before it was repaint)
This is insane. Such progress in model making tech. Now all we have to do is find a way shrink it size prefect to proportion, mass produce it, and create sets for kids. Man I would have killed for this as a kid. Incredible.

I rode this when it was at Six Flags in Atlanta. We happened to catch it between 'its broken down' on a corporate night and all I can say is one ride was enough. Front row outside seat. Terrifying, but fun.
