Mostly just for the customization and aesthetics. You can print this out in whatever colors or designs you want for _about_ the cost of a cabinet, and at the exact dimensions you need. It's not meant to be a cheaper alternative to something like an Ikea Kallax, but rather something for when you have a very specific theme in mind you want to use, or if you just have a big printer and like making filament go brrrrr

This looks like an insane filament grave. I prefer solutions where you combine stiff, slim and light standard components with the power of 3d printing instead of trying to do stuff with the 3d printer, where its not the best choice to begin with. That said, if someone wants to have it, go for it.

I get the mini storage... And yes! You 'can' 3D print anything... But the cost of the files.... Cost of filiment.. Cost of printing and the time.... Would it not be a lot cheaper and more effecient just to buy a bookcase? I personally would never buy this! But.... Make me some acrylic doors designed to work with a 'Billy bookcase' and I'd buy that in a heartbeat! :)

how much would a cabinet like that cost? I understand its strength might be its custimizability, but it doesn't seem to offer anything different from a standard cheap cabinet. plus you still need to buy acrylic or glass or plexigalls panels for the doors. I could buy a cheap one and the create panels or customize it with 3D printing. it also seems a bit clunky and a big waste of space with such thick shelves and parts. maybe this solution offers something I can't see, I'd really like to know

Make some thin, printable planks that fit into Kallax shelves and a bunch of accessories that fit those hexagonal holes (like mini half-shelves and the like) Doors? DIY isn't always about saving money, because you'll often spend more making something than you would buying it. Sometimes, the point is having something that's customized to your exact space or desired appearance. An IKEA Kallax probably won't fit the recessed space in a wall perfectly, so a carpenter would build a cabinet to do that and it would cost quite a bit more than going to IKEA. This solution isn't for everyone, though. Some people are fine with a cabinet that looks too small for the space and will just add some decorative touches to fill that space out.

  • @KurayamiWinter

Hilariously this is how I joined two kickstarters. but given the freedom to do custom makes worth it, regardless maybe a bit more on cost than buying and attempting to mod normal stuff.

I backed the original Omni but I stayed away from the Omni 2 because it was just too insanely expensive and heavy to build. I'm leaning that way as well with the Omni 3...spend a couple hundred bucks on filament for printed shelves or much less than that at IKEA for a bookcase I can repurpose for board game storage? It's neat and the themed options certainly can be a decorative focal point all on their own, don't get me wrong, I just struggle to see the value in it.

I am currently a backer… at $45 it seems OK… But what the heck am I gonna do with it? Without metal rods, there’s no way it’s gonna hold up to the heavy board games I own. Believe me, I have printed things like the stage top tables, and the number of supports needed is insane. These shelves are not supported in anyway. Their concept arch is just ridiculous. For $45 I can Jerry rig some metal rods into it … but I shouldn’t have to do that… I might back out… the survey from that last project I did say something as a suggestion for game storage. And given the fact that they seem totally fine when using nuts and bolts, maybe they could make something good. But given the skill of and no major hardware, this is their first major fail. Well, I have a quite a few days to back out …. 😢 😅
