I roadraced RDs for eight years. I won six championships, two national championships, on the original crankshaft, clutch, and I used the oil injection system. They’re happier with the 16 tooth countershaft sprocket. On an 85° day, my RD would do 111 miles an hour by the speedometer down the front straightaway of Summit point Raceway. On the first lap. But on the 15th lap, it would be lucky to be doing 99. The fastest 350 back in the 70s was the Kawasaki triples. The S1 & S2..Their problem was, they could not survive race track crashes because of the engine width...the oil pump was vulnerable on one side, and the engine cases were not strong enough to protect the crankshaft on the other side.It was a shame because the S2 was actually faster than the RD. it handled just as well. I had both. But my RD and many RDs were tossed on the asphalt many times, and you just couldn’t damage the motor, it was nice and narrow. The RD 350 would not rev past 8500, but the S2 I think pulled past 11,000. The S1 had a drum brake in the front, the S2 had a disc in the front. The S1 had a weakness, it only had four main bearings, which allowed the crankshaft to flex and burn the thrust washers on the drive side connecting rod. The S2 has six main bearings and did not suffer from crank flex. But the RD was king of the race tracks. But I believe that Bridgestone would have been the king of the two stroke 350s. Except for the dock strike in the late 60s, the ships loaded with bridge stones would not be unloaded by the striking longshoreman, and that put Bridgestone out of business. I think that those ships were not unloaded for months, and they missed the selling season I think in 1968 or 69. I had a 350 Bridge stone. It had a six speed, dry clutch, the cylinder bores were chromed, it was a rotary valve twin, it would start in any gear if you pull the clutch in, and it would start without a battery.. and had a clever design, the alternator was mounted behind the cylinders, ithe air intake Drew air down over the alternator to keep it cool. I don’t know if that was better, I think cool air makes more power, but it was pretty slick..The Bridgestone shift shaft came out on both sides of the engine so you could put the shifter on the left side or the right side of the machine and move the brake to the right or the left side of the machine..That was before all the factories got together and made it a rule that all brakes are on the right, and all shifting is on the left. RDs were great bikes. I raced in the late 70s into the 80s. Now in 2018, I still have my old race bike, and many many parts, cylinders, engines, pistons, crankshafts..Maybe someday, I’ll throw one together

Graeme Williams I never had a 450 Honda myself, but I was a service mechanic at a Honda dealership, and I remember changing the head gasket on a450 Honda for the first time. I was stunned, I’ll repeat, I was shocked to discover that a 450 Honda did not have coil valve springs. I remember the other mechanics laughing at me as I stood there with my mouth opened.. I said out loud, “this thing doesn’t have any valve springs?“ I’m not surprised that Your Bridgestone 350 was faster than your 450 Honda. A 350 Bridgestone was the second fastest of the 350 2-strokes.. The fastest 350 in my opinion was the Kawasaki A7ss avenger.. I had one. It was a two cylinder rotary valve twin. I believe they had 42 hp, and an RD 350 had 38 hp. I don’t know what the Bridgestone’s horse power rating was, but the Bridgestone was more Advanced than any of The air cooled 2-strokes..The bores inside the cylinders were chromed..It had a dry clutch, which is an advantage because you’re not spinning the entire clutch in oil which is a hell of a drag. It had a six speed transmission, and that was in 1967 or 68. Yamaha didn’t put a six speed in their machine till 1973.. actually they put a six speed in a Yamaha in 19 72 1/2.. it had R5 piston port cylinders, but it had a six speed transmission. Yamaha had to put 200 Street versions of that machine out in the public for a race bike with an engine from that line of machines to be legal to race at Daytona that year. It was basically an R5 with an RD transmission. The 450 Honda was not known for being a fast machine, neither was the 500“T “that it became later. But they sure did rev. According to the tachometer, I have seen 450 rev past 12,000 RPMs I have many boxes of old motorcycle magazines from the 50s 60s 70s up until about five years ago when I stopped getting the magazines, because they just don’t dig into the machines the way they used to. They used to take the engine apart and spend three or four pages with many photographs of the engine , They would comment on how easy it was to service it, they would show what it was like to adjust the valves or to replace pistons on a two stroke. Today, they’ll have one or two photographs, in about 300 words on a new machine. I stopped getting Magazines A few years ago. No wonder motorcycle sales are dropping... in one of those old magazines, I remember reading a road test, of a 450 Honda when they first came out. The writer/tester for the magazine actually said, that motorcycles are getting too fast, and they could possibly affect your vision because of the acceleration. I was amazed then, today, I’m more amazed.. because, about five years ago, a good friend of mine who is also a motorcycle junkie picked up a very clean low mileage 450. I took it for a ride. I could not believe how slow it is..I said to my buddy“my aching ass this thing is slow”. He laughed and said, I know, how did we ever think these things were fast. Along those same lines, I remember when the 750 Honda first appeared, those same magazines said that we were reaching the limits of physics because of all the power that thing makes. I think it made 59 hp on a good day. I believe the 600s today are well over 100 horse power, and Moto GP engines are approaching 300 hp. My aching ass, how fast will they be in 20 years?

Fantastic Restoration of Yamaha Rd350, DG heads, with front US spec rd350, Hats of to the owner and the restorer beautiful
The sound of a good RD is still intoxicating. What a bike!
Everybody thinks they would love to have a brand new 1973 RD 350. Trust me, you would not be happy with it after riding something modern. In 2006 I found a 1974 RD with 6000 miles on it That was kept in a heated garagesince new..I raced the exact same machine for eight years back in the 70s and 80s. I still have parts to keep one running for the next hundred years. They are so simple. I had it running within three hours. I put the koni shocks on it from my race bike which I still have ..I threw in new points and condenser’s, which I had, I pulled the top and off, and the cylinders still had the crosshatch Hone swirl marks.. I check the timing marks to see if they were accurate with a dial indicator, I set the oil pump ,I thoroughly clean the carburetors, I replaced the fuel lines, cleaned out the petcock, change the fork oil, change the transmission oil, bled the oil pump, checked for air leaks, replaced your original paper air filter with another paper air filter.I did everything I should. When I took the machine out on the road, I wondered how the hell I used to think this thing was fast. I am used to riding modern machines with power, and real suspensions, and real brakes and fork tubes that don’t flex, and frames that don’t flex, and shocks that actually work right off the showroom floor.i ride a Guzzi on the street now and have been riding them for almost 40 years, so I’m used to instantaneous Torque at 1000 rpm.. I have had many other machines also. I have very fond memories of the RDs. They were the best of their day, but their day has passed. I would prefer they would bring back the RZ 350, the only thing wrong with that machine was it needed better fork tubes,And fuel injection.I had one, it was much better than an RD Yamaha needs to come back with a 54 mm stroke water cooled parallel twin, possibly a V twin, possibly a V 4..Fuel injection, aluminum frame, single-sided swingarm, two-stroke of course. With a single front disc brake, and a drum brake in the rear, you don’t need a 250 horse power brake in the rear Of a 350 pound machine. Why have that added weight and complexity and that Gyro when you don’t need it. I realize that it would be more difficult for companies to have ABS brakes on a machine with drum brakes in the rear. But I dislike ABS and traction control anyway, both have gotten me into trouble in the past.. traction control almost got me run over by a gasoline truck one snowy day in my company jeep. I know they can make two strokes that are EPA compliant. I hope it’s just a matter of time until we start seeing them again. Can you imagine not having cam chains, and cam chain tensioner‘s, and chain driven counterbalancers, and added complexity and weight and added cost of electric starters.. my point is, why go back to Stone Age air cooled carbureted technology when technology that is decades more advanced is available now. Don’t get me wrong. I love RDs, but I don’t want Yamaha to start making them again the way they were. I expect better because better is available. I just want them to get off of top dead center and start doing something about it

I was one of only 3 owners of RD400’s bought new in ‘76(my cousin was another) from our dealership in Montreal. Previous year I drove a ‘72 Kawasaki 350 triple. I can tell you one thing…. The 350 was no match for the 400, by my feel. That RD was a true “Giant Killer”, many 750’s in the area fell victim to the smell of a 2 stroke leaving them behind. The only bike I got wasted by was the new Kawasaki Z-1 900, a true beast of a machine.

Sweet sound of 2 Stroke twin engine. I have grown up riding 2 Stroke motorbikes - Yamaha RX 100, Suzuki Supra, Suzuki Shogun, Yezdi Road King. Even though motorbikes these days make more BHP but the power delivery is linear so you don't feel the sudden rush. Yamaha RD 350 is a pure adrenaline rush. Kudos to all those people who still owns and maintain this legendary machine.

A senior in High School in '75 and reading all the motorcycle mags in library I dreamed about owning the '75 RD350B. Finally the day I graduated I went to Yamaha dealer 100 miles away "Just to Look" I ended up driving home on the new RD350B. Absolutely loved that bike. At time I had a 1967 YR1 350 Grand Prix loved it too. Hoping to find another MINT RD350B but recently bought a MINT YR1 it has only 3600 mi on it. Couple vids on my channel. The Bike mags said 14.5 quarter mile. I ran 14.0's with mine and one day ran 5 14.0's during eliminations at the strip. Wanted to hit the 13.99 but never did.
This is my favourite bike..! Yamaha please revive it again..!
