Welcome back Tony! Thanks for the comment! This just ignited the itch to get the rest of the work finished so I can get the engine in the car. I can tell already it is going to be much more of a monster than the 273 was. It's way more snappy and the 273 never shook the run stand like this one does. What did you think about the lack of music in this video?

Thank you for the comment Frank! I would say welcome to the channel but it seems you have been here a while. That run stand is literally built from parts pf a privacy fence we took down when we moved in here. I suppose I could draft up some plans for those that are interested. Would you want a set? It definitely makes tuning and identifying problems easier. Better to find them on the run stand, than once it's in the car. =)

I'm a retired mechanic. Before there was silicone gasket maker there was Indian Head gasket shellac. Permatex bought the company. Why you say are you telling me this? You do not want to put RTV silicone gasket on your engine freeze plugs or any thing to do with the cooling system. That silicone plugs the radiator cores once it gets loose. All of us old head mechanics use Permatex Indian Head Gasket Shellac on freeze plugs. I coat the whole freeze plug and run the brush around the engine block hole for the freeze plug. I have never had a leaking freeze plug and It's my belief that it helps the freeze plug from forming rust. Note to all, If you change your anti freeze every 3 years you will never have rust in the system.

Hello John. Welcome to the channel and thank you for the valuable insight! I will definitely look into the Permatex Indian Head Gasket Shellac. I plan to drain the engine and seal the core plugs just before I drop it into the car. Still have a bit more structural repair to do before I get there though. I will have to do the same when I do a proper rebuild on the 273. Any tops for removing rust from the cooling system of an old engine that sat for 30 years? I blasted out the inside of the 273 with a pressure washer until the water ran clear but it still turns the coolant rust colored after a month. Evaporust makes a coolant system flush that is supposed to convert the rust in the system. I was thinking of going that route.

Nice job man! One note, never,,,, and I mean never! Tune a dodge to factory specs, that's a starting point at best. Instead tune by ear, you'll know you've got it right when the throttle response is instant and it fires up just touching the key or starter button. I've never used a timing light in over 40 years and most of my friends come to me to finalize their tunes, of course these are carburetor engines with distributors so I am well versed in they way they should run because I know in my memories what a good running one sounds like. From what I van hear on your engine it's a good solid motor and should last you a long time even if you abuse it. So well done👍

Hello again David! Once again, thanks for the comment. I'll be honest. I am still really new at this and I am learning each engine is different. I can tune my 273 by ear but when I tried to tune this one by ear, I ended up with 25* of initial timing. Lol. I will likely stick with the timing light until I get a few more engines under my belt. It also falls in line with my occupation as an engineer. I use a ton of test equipment in my day job and I tend to trust it more than I do myself until I get a feel for what I am working on.

Hey Chumley! I haven't seen you in the comments in a bit. Welcome back! Thanks for the comment. I am loving the sound of the engine so far. Still needs some carb tuning but we'll get there. As far as the run stand, It is literally built from left over fence materials I have laying behind the outbuilding. When you pulled the distributor out, did you have to remove the gear before inserting the Allen rod?

The intermediate shaft was left out during the initial assembly, as I knew I wanted to prime the oil pump, but yes you do need to remove it if you want to use the allen rod to prime the oil pump. I probably should have shown where I installed it after priming the pump.

Welcome back Charles and thank you for the comment. The oil pan does not leak. Not yet anyway. Between the pan being bent during shipping, and the gasket graft, I was a little concerned about it. I found the process on magnumswap.com. They detail how to use LA parts on a magnum to keep the engine looking more original to the car. We'll see if it holds up once it is back in the car and under load.

Hi Gary! Welcome and thank you for the comment! What I did when I dropped the distributor in is set cylinder 1 at 10* BTC to set the initial timing for the first start. That is why it snapped off so quick and idled well on the initial start. It ended up at 25* because I am a dunce and advanced it there trying to set the timing by ear. I don't have enough experience with the 360 to do that yet so I'll stick with the timing light for now. 😁

  • @MontsweagGarage

Welcome back Thomas. Thanks for yet another comment. I was under the impression break-in oil was for flat tappet cams. I am the first to admit that this is only my second engine rebuild and I don't know all the ins and outs. My 273 ran fine after breaking though I used a high zinc oil as well as a zinc additive for the flat tappet cam that was in it. I'll definitely keep an eye on this one. It currently has between 160 and 165 psi static compression across all the cylinders so I think the rings have a pretty good seal. I don't really want much more than that with the cash iron heads. I appreciate the info. I will definitely look into it more.

I still have to finish the control arm mounts and inner fenders, get the front suspension freshened up, then I can drop her in. from there I plan to install a Holley Sniper EFI and drive the wheels of of it!
