    My friend and I both have Magnums in our second gen Rams. We both have the 318, I have a 94 and he has a 96. One of the things we found out was that his motor is capable of grinding its own cam profiles! My motor has been hydro locked three times and continues to tick on with 190,000 miles

    It's nice that you checked the piston to valve clearance. There's still a lot of people out there who assume that the old 318/360 LA engine is basically just like the 5.2/5.9L Magnum engines. The don't realize the Magnum engines are interference engines. The valve can hit the piston if the timing chain skips a couple teeth. That's kind what I'm dealing with right now. The timing chain jumped a couple teeth in my brother's 2000 Durango. Couldn't find a good used 5.9L Magnum. Had to get a remanufactured engine. This never would have happened if he stopped driving when it when it started losing power,engine was making a racket. The check engine light was on. It was basically telling him to stop driving it, yet he kept driving anyway. Welp??........that was a $4000.00 mistake. Piston hit the valve & shattered the #1 piston.

    I’ve been running a Hughes HAER0814AL on 112 LSA in my Ramcharger since 2009. .512/.520 with Hughes valve springs/retainers and keepers. About 20k on it. It’s actually about to go into my Duster for a while as I rewire the truck. The 340’s cam is going flat (got impatient during Covid and used comp lifters, bad idea)

    I have owned one of these and Jen since 1994 when it was brand new… I have gone through the whole engine, balancing and blue printing it.. performance cam new EQ heads, the super expensive Hughes rockers…. These engines just don’t make a lot of power. I would imagine if you stroked it probably so…. for the most part, it takes a lot of effort just to get a little more power than stock out of it…. For anybody wanting to build one of the intentions if you can do an engine swap, go that route….. would probably be better off doing an old-school 440..

    Just checked out the specs on a 746 cam... way too wide. Leaving alot of power on the table. Youll be much happier with a tighter lsa. It not what we want its what the engine wants. Just 2 degrees off the proper lsa and the engine could suffer 30lbs/ft torque all the way to 3500. Proper Lsa allows the engine to breathe properly through the entire RPM range and is cubic inch and valve size dependant along with other minor factors. 128-cui÷8÷2.02×.91. This calculation works for sbc and mopars at 10.5:1. David vizard dynod over 20k engines to come up with this formula. Every engine needs specific LSA combined with specific overlap depending on the engine operation, 60 degrees overlap is fine for the street. Less than that if you dont want choppy idle a d need lots of vacuum. More if you are looking for a screamer and dont care about vacuum. The formula for advertised duration is LSA + (overlap÷2) ×2. The faster you can open the valve the better as long as the valvetrain remains stable. For every 1 point drop in compression..tighten Lsa 1 degree. For every point higher in rocker ratio ..widen lsa 1 degree. This will get you the best cam for your engine PERIOD. Hope this helps,. Youre buying HP correct... so dont just buy a shelf cam because you think it'll work good, the engine doesnt care what we think. Stock cams are often superior and can be ground to better suit your application.

I have a quick video of it if you want to see it , and I believe that there's more in it, i got some better valve springs because I think that i had valve float because it should have peaked higher than 5700 and I had some really warped rims and the driveshaft had bad u joints on it which may have hurt it as well but all of it is fixed now except for the springs

    Great vids keep'em coming. Question I have is I'm considering using 20-746-9 cam you took out for my daily driven RT, although comp recommended the 20-745-9 but since I'm rebuilding my engine and thought to buy the Edelbrock Magnum heads I figured might as well try to go as big as I can on a street able set up for daily driving. Would you recommend doing that combo? I see in this video with your stock upgraded heads it worked well, but also worked with the new cam(which I love the sounds)so in a nut she'll is it even worth spending over 2k for heads to be used with a mild Cam? Value your opinion and knowledge 🤗

  • @thomasbeyer

    @thomasbeyer

    My ported heads outflow the Edelbrocks out of the box so I don't know if it will perform exactly the same it should do pretty decent though plus more compression from the 58cc combustion chambers. I would get a little more aggressive cam than the 20-746-9 or a cam that's close but with a 110 LSA instead of the 114 the 20-746-9 gives. My new cam made 65 more horsepower. I was stuck at 300 horse before seemed like no matter what I did that was all that cam would make. It did have excellent Street manners tho. My new cam bucked a little bit with a stock converter and I went to a 2400 stall and that solve that problem. And with the 2400 I really can't tell it's not a stock converter. It drives great.

    Yes a little advanced on the injection timing will help for performance. If your running a wet kit you should be fine. If not then it will need some tuning. I'm not that familiar with nitrous. 150 seems like a lot of it's a dry kit.

    honestly I don't think the compcam 20-746-9 is aggressive enough to change the springs. I say this because the difference between it and the original is minimal. Cam, valve springs, definitely will need tuned with any decent sized cam. Possibly slightly larger injectors too. But that's the bare minimum. If you get a cam like I put in mine you're going to need a slightly higher stall converter. Mine bucked just a little bit with the stock converter.
