GARLIC HARVEST 🌻 SHALLOT HARVEST 🌻 PARSNIP THINNING. My garlic harvest raises concern but my shallot harvest reaps rewards. Parsnip thinning is later than usual due to a few factors. Sit back and ENJOY!!!

So many gardener's have lost their garlic and onions. It was warm in the mini heat wave, then nothing but rain.....😂. Is it July.....😅 ♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.

Great catch up Nigel. Shame about the garlic - ours wasn't good at all but as always we'll try again next year!

Hi Nigel, garlic has been a hard one for me this year and others too. Quite a lot of crops have failed this season for me, leeks have rust again, sweetpeas germinated but were munched, 3 more sowings & gave up. Sunflowers were munched too, only one left & it doesn't look good. Lovely update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊

Hi Nigel I feel your pain I didn’t have a single garlic bulb I could use due to rust. It’s so frustrating but will try again next season.😂

Have been racking my highly qualified Horticultural brain, why so much rust around, have been experimenting here in New Zealand, my onion, garlic, shallots, elephant garlic and leeks share a bed each year, but don't come back to that bed for 9 years, that is reasonably new, due to our household now only being two. Planting the garlic deeper up to 100mm and in mid Autumn, seems to be working, even planted closer last year incase the crop failed. Buy new garlic from a reliable source, used some of own rust free this year, will be interesting to see how that goes. Have also been injured, so the garlic wasn't something I worried about much. But had grown no garlic from 2018 until 2023.

My garlic didn’t split either and the stems looked so teasingly promising 😢. Not a bad shallot harvest though 👍. It’s been an odd year across the globe Nigel but we’re gardeners we will always try again next year. Have a super day, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Hi Ali, I think that was the cause of my disappointment. The stems were over 1/2” thick yet the bulbs were not much bigger 🙁

All 50 of my garlic we had to burn, I was gutted!! I have grown garlic for years very successfully, however this year garlic shared a raised bed with onions as I have done in the past and had good results. However the dreaded rust destroyed my garlic and to save my onions I pulled them all and burned the lot to avoid further rust to my onions. Yesterday I harvested my onions very pleased with the result. Have read I cannot sow garlic or onions in this bed for 3 years!! Would appreciate and advice from all you gardeners.

Hi Nigel. There seem to be a lot of us who have had a garlic fail this year. Quick question - what type of wire or plastic frame do you use under the green mesh over the parsnips ? Thanks.

Nice update Nigel, I think the weather may be a factor with the garlic, its been so wet and cold, (doesn't explain the non splitting though), don't forget to take the collars off this year!...Good luck for the season.

Had a look at my garlic and it looks similar, no size at all. Don't think it's cold enough now to give em enough cold so they split. Might have to stick the cloves in the fridge for a month before in future. No cold Winters anymore no Hot Summers anymore, just like Autumn all year these days . Absolute cack.

Quite right Dan. Good idea with the fridge, may do half and half next year just to compare results. Seed onions are slow bulbing up. Another 6,weeks and we will really see the nights drawing in 🙁

Hi Nigel, sorry to hear about your garlic. While I don't grow garlic, I'm hoping not to get a similar result with my onions come September. We've had plenty of rain the last 3 weeks but got good harvest of broccoli, cabbage & salad lettuce. Also got my spring flower display planted in the front garden. This year stock, snapdragon & yellow pansies. 350 plants in all. Good luck with the rest of your seasons harvest. Cheers from down under. 👍👍😋😋

Hi Steve , yes the LRF are bulking up nicely... in fact all of the seed onions appear to be on track. It is my worse season for slow maturing crops since I started my allotment. The runner beans have been in 8+ weeks and not reached to top s of the canes yet.

Nightmare Nigel. The few garlic of mine that did bulb up were okay, but I expect to get more than 5 decent ones from 20 or 30 planted! Just waiting for a few consecutive dry days before lifting my shallots. I have never know carrots to take as long to germinate at this year - 4 weeks for 4 different varieties on my plot, normally 2 weeks max!
