    Try using a guide coat helps keep you from sanding more than necessary.

    Yeah I'm just trying to get it close enough that a guide coat is really necessary. Up to this point it's pretty evident what's needed and where. I've learned a lot, mostly about what not to do, but I think it's really close to primer. Seriously this time. Appreciate you checking it out.

    It's nice to hear the word "PAINT"! Once you fill all those dips and gashes, lay down high build primer. At night, since you are outside, I used a flash light and shined the light towards my face parallel with the hull surface. I marked where I could see low spots. This is for the initial inspection of how fair the hull is. It'll tell you if you need to sand 90%+ of the primer off and prep for a 2nd coat or lightly sand and go for a final coat. I think I was on the 3rd coat or so of primer until sanding didnt show anymore of the green Total Fair. I can't wait to see the color. Judging by your common sense, it's going to look amazing with the details you are putting into the fairing process.. See ya soon brother!!

    I think a high-build primer will solve most of the problems you've pointed out. You're going to be sanding your primer anyway, and I'd bet you'll end up putting on a second coat of primer. I've roll-and-tipped awlgrip high-build with some success. It's still an art, but not as bad as fairing.

  • @Bigeaux20

    I'm still going back and forth about the high build. I know it would deal with some of the imperfection issues, and I really don't mind the sanding as long as it's a progressive process all leading to a good result. I'm still contemplating it. I've seen someone roll it, so I am going to pick his brain and see how it went. Even with the finish primer I am expecting to put a thin layer on, guide coating, sand it back losing probably most of the first layer. Make final fairing tasks, then hopefully put a couple coats of primer, then guide and get pretty close. My fear is all that is wishful thinking. Stick around, I am getting used to your perspective.

    My opinion on the fairing should have put the high build first then sand . On that 1st layer you will find all the high spots then fair. I did a project like you did and I agree I was sanding for days not fun. Then 2nd project I sanded the bare wood and applied print spray on the surface sanded all the high spots down then sprayed primer . I was shocked how close I got it . I sprayed print spray all over the surface and watersanded I brought the project out in the sun walked around and lightly sanded the high spots .

    As with anything the first time doing anything with virtually no guidance is a steep learning curve. The worst part for me is not knowing what done looks like. I’ve followed the path of steady progress even if that meant I may not be as efficient as someone who has a lot more experience than me. If I had to start all over again it would take me a fraction of time and effort, but that’s with anything. So, my next steps will be high build, finish primer, then top coat to flip this thing back over. Just need some days to get back on the project. Work has become paramount so it’s hard to make progress working on the boat 4 days in 2 months.

  • @dougstarkey7128

    That’s looking really good. If you want to try high build primer you could get a couple of spray cans at your local auto parts store just to see if you like it. You might be ahead if you use your small compressor and a blow gut to clean your surface before you spray or roll on your primer. Either way that’s going to look good when you put on the final color. Great job!

    I appreciate it. I'm thinking I'm going to go straight to finish primer, but I still have this high build in the back of my head I can't shake. I've sprayed before, and it's not too far fetched for me to get the stuff to spray a few coats. I vacillate back and forth a lot about it. Appreciate you checking it out. There's also a chance to roll on some high build. Time will tell.

    Do you have to sand back the low spot before applying more compound to them? I’m at tag step and not sure how to keep track of low spot if I sand them back…

  • @Bigeaux20

    @Bigeaux20

    6 ай бұрын

    That's a very good question, and I don't know if I'm the best to answer it but I will tell you my thoughts. I don't think you have to sand it in terms of surface prep to ensure a bond, which is what I think you are asking. I don't remember if in the process of longboarding if all of the surface gets sanded, and some just much more than others like the high points for example get sanded, and etched totally, but I think even the low areas have some contact with the paper, but maybe just not enough that you see the change in color. You have me thinking hard on that one.

    @@Bigeaux20 thanks for answer. I am spending a lot of time sanding the low spot by hand and then it s harder to find them, I have done a second skim coat but after that I’ll just do some patch.. Yes I was worried about the bonding, though Iow spot still have a little grain to it. The new compound is a little thicker.

    I saw your other message on FB, and the picture was awesome. Some angles and stuff to deal with i your build. Let me ask, was it much colder when you experienced TotalFair being much thicker. I did notice that cold temps made it sluggish, but in the same breath, hot temps made it go from thin to set so much faster so I did lots of small batches. I am going to retry my epoxy fairing compound additive as well as giving the peel ply a try. I hope it saves time and not another learning adventure.
