320. Hundred Years' War: The Black Prince

As the spectre of the Black Death haunts Europe, a more tangible foe terrorises the French king and his subjects: the Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock. After his great victory leading the vanguard at Crécy, he continues with his regular incursions into France, before eventually being cornered by John II and his vast army at Poitiers in 1356: has the Black Prince’s luck finally run out?

No. I think the colour related to his clothes. He thought black made him look slimmer.

The French brought all this upon, themselves. If they hadn't threatened to seize Edward's few remaining possessions in France, and connived with the Scots to invade England via Scotland, Edward would never have tried to gain bases in France in the first place. He'd never have thought it worth the risk, and the Parliament and the barons wouldn't have voted him the money for an otherwise pointless and risky venture. Edward and the English only did so, in order to ensure that the French didn't have a free hand to cross the chanel and invade England whenever they liked. The most hilarious of the many hilarious events in this fiasco were the disastrous attempt by France to retake Calais, the French guy who went to discuss the French Order of the Star having his castle grabbed by the English when he was away, and 'Charles the Bad's activities. Incidentally 'Charles the Bad' did look exactly like Mr Burns of the Simpsons, and (ironically) was accidentally burned alive in 1387.
