Oh dear. They were talking about the human wave attack scene Enemy at the Gates, and asked, "And that's exactly how it happened?" And Iain MacGregor said yes?! Probably won't be buying the book he's flogging, then...

@@iainmacgregor4692 I'm genuinely flattered to have the author himself get back to me. So the bit I was referring to begins around 42:50. Dominic brings up that very exciting - but woefully inaccurate - opening scene of Enemy at the Gates - the Volga crossing followed immediately by a human wave attack - and asks you, "And that's exactly how it happened?" And your answer is affirmative. I imagine you will defend yourself by saying that you were referring - in the film - to the speed with which men are thrown in battle after arriving on the west bank of the Volga, and not to the manner in which the Soviets conduct that battle, i.e. the human wave attack. But that distinction is not at all clear from what you said in the podcast - hence my comment. If you're genuinely worried about the impact of my waspishness on your book sales, however, I will happily delete my original comment at your request. I never intended to interfere with anyone's ability to earn a living.

Germany did not want make the mistake of fighting on two fronts. but they had no other choice. Hitler knew that fighting on two fronts simultaneously was suicide, but he understood that it was only a question of time before the USA came into the war. Germany's plan was to defeat the Russians and then finish the war on the other front in France,Norway,Italy or wherever when it would happen in either 1943/44

I appreciate that the memory of WW2, and any comparison to the Nazi war machine, is very painful for Russians. However, I think Putin's destruction of Mariupol, and the urban warfare involved, is comparable to what happened in Stalingrad.

I do wish Mr Holland would stop saying Nazis, they were Germans, just say Germans! Also comparing the Russian Army of today to the German Army of WW2 is idiotic.

I mean some of them were the SS who were an arm of the NSDAP and the Wehrmacht overall was obviously representing only the NSDAP government of Germany. And no that comparison isnt "idiotic". The overhyped militarism and the barbarity backed by a massive propaganda effort to lie to the people at home are all similar. No doubt the quantity of overall evil from the Wehrmacht to the russian army today is different, but they are both evil armies backing evil actions doing evil things
