318 Mopar Engine Build on a Budget Part 3. Rocker assemblies installed!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we make progress on the 318 build by fixing an old thermostat housing, installing the core plugs, and how-to install the rocker assemblies. And no, not keeping the gold valve covers on this engine.
Please let me know in the comments if you enjoy the background music or if it is too distracting.

Steven your the first to address the notch in the shaft and you're spot on. I love the way you explained it. Love the kids getting involved, he strikes as a smart kid with his observations and the questions he asked. Good vid.

Thanks John! He's a very bright kid with a short attention span but I'm hoping he'll be out in the shop with me more often. Your videos with your boy are an inspiration, he's a lucky kid you got there!

My son likes to help when he can, but he's little and has a short attention span. He got to install the fuel pump the other day. I have a feeling he'll be out with me more often. At least I hope so.

Pretty cool details on the 318 roller ... I got an 89 318 in my project 72 dart.... Has not been strated in 14 or so years but was stored with oil in cylinders and block off plates will be some interesting first start lol 😂..... I will follow your build so I subbed.

Thank you! I'd suggest priming the engine while rotating it by hand (plugs out) before fire up if it's been sitting that long. Pull the valve covers off and make sure everything is getting lube and no issues with the rockers & pushrods. Good luck with your build! If there is anything you'd like to see in a video let me know and I'll see if I can produce one. Always looking for ideas and suggestions!

During your assembly video you mentioned that it does not matter what hole the piston/rod assemblies go. On an LA engine you will see a 0-5 stamp in the oil pan rail which designates what the final bore size is so the guy on the assembly line knows what piston to install in what hole. The bored and pistons were sized on a 0-5 scale. The 318 I am doing right now has four #4 pistons, two #2, one#1 and one #3. Of course if the engine has a fresh bore that would not matter.

I do remember reading about that before and have seen blocks that have the numbers scribbled on the sides. Were they still doing that in '86 I wonder? (the year of this particular engine)

Just did a very similar build with most of the work in the heads.87 LA 318 Roller block started out like you and at some point just decided to have block cleaned and machined properly.New pistons, rings, bearings, new roller cam and lifters along with a good double roller.Your build and explainations are both well done.

Thank you, really means a lot! If I were to do it again I would of taken the block down and had it professionally cleaned and checked. It ran well enough before so I didn't have any concerns. (Even with the bent pushrod).

I had a vacuum leak on number 3 cylinder so I pulled the intake and replaced the intake gasket and I used the edelbrock gasket and I used that permatex gasket maker on the china walls and the water passages then set the intake and torqued it down and after I got it all finished I waited till the next day to set the silicone and now I have a water leak and the front china wall is leaking oil but I fixed the vacuum leak. I’ve got over 40 years experience automotive repair and this 318 has been a big pain ever since I bought the car. I ordered a new gasket but this time I went with felpro and I’m going to glue the end gaskets in and try it again.

I always use the China wall gaskets but I contact cement them to the block and regular gasket cement on the top of the gasket

I just installed the intake manifold last night. I used a large bead of ULTRA GREY permatex on the front and rear walls, a little smear around both sides of the water jackets, and torqued the bolts down in sequence. Also used the FelPro intake gaskets that came in the engine gasket set. The three concerns I have when sealing an intake are Water, Vacuum, Oil. In that order. I can live with a little oil leak outside the intake, but water getting into the oil is not good.
