Hi Jim. I raised the deck height 1/4" and the chains the same, now the cutting height is 2 1/4" which is perfect for fine fescue grass. thanks very much for your video, it was very helpful. Thanks again Ed McGee

Wow - for those of us with rural or bumpy lawns, this was a big help, I now have 1-5 as 1.25, 1.75, 2.25, 2.75, 3.25 and I use 1.75 (position #2) as my go-to on a bit of lawn (the Centipede lawn). I was changing the belt over (STENS, very tough belt) after burning up some import ("Woniu") belt and did the deck-lift; i think it was about six quarter-turns on that 9/16" nut. Use a deep-socket if you have it.

Thanks Jim, You've helped so much. I bought a used 2002 snapper in 2014.... in 2021 I started having problems. I live in Italy and don't have easy access to parts nor to folks that know these machines. A vendor tried to convince me to buy a new macchine for 3400 euro. With your help I have the old macchine up and running better than when I bought it for less than 300 euro. Thanks to you, I feel comfortable taking everything apart and putting in back together again.

I've been having a max flow of these snappers coming into my shop. Most of these have been sitting for a few years and have water in the fuel tanks that has rusted out the rest of the fuel system. I yard tested the last tractor that needed quite a bit of work and it scalped my yard even though it was on the setting of 5. I had thought the chains were where they needed to be moved but your video quickly got me straight. The tractor went home with the customer today, but his chains needed to be cleaned up and the threads lubricated first prior to attempting to move anything.

Jim, now that I’ve got my mower staying running I cut my lawn a couple of weeks ago and it was so bad the mower kept dying and when done, my buddy that used to own a lawn business asked me if it had thatching blades on it. My lawn wasn’t that high to cause either of these things. I bought a new blade and put it on today and mowed again. Same thing, maybe not quite as bad. I took it into the shop and adjusted the rear chains, not knowing about the front adjustment and went to finish the job. Much better, mower never bogged but still not great. What is the height of the from the factory supposed to be from the floor to the deck on the 1 setting? I figured if I can get this set it will get me a good starting place. Btw I have been mowing on the #5 setting through the whole process. Thanks again for all your help and knowledge.

Hey there Jim. Thanks for all of your videos. A few months ago I picked up my first vintage Snapper RER and have been enjoying the restoration process thanks to your videos. I do have a question: I have a 7800103. I have to cut my lawn pretty tall due to some uneven spots and being on a hill. I've raised the deck as high as it can possibly go, which finally got me to an acceptable length when driving straight. However, any bump I hit scalps the lawn significantly- like going onto the sidewalk or driveway. I understand that it comes with the territory (no pun intended,) but I've had other riders and this one does it way worse. Tires are inflated correctly, brand new blade, all maintenance done, etc. So my question is- are there any sort of rubber mounts or mechanisms that stabilize the deck that might have worn down and need replacing? The deck sure seems pretty bouncy on these elevation transfers... I just cant figure out a solution and I LOVE everything else about this mower. I'll live with the scalps if I have to, but it would be great if I didn't. Thanks so much again for all you do!

Jim: I just purchased a pretty good used snapper rear engine unit. It would not run. I got the thing running in no time, but in running it around the yard to test it, I saw that whenever a tire ran into a small hole in the yard it would scalp the yard pretty bad. Doesn't the unit have some type of "floating deck" to try and keep it level when the frame moves? I see that most older snappers like mine do not have anti scalping wheels so how does that work. Thanks for your videos.

That’s a common issue with all mower decks and the whole airflow turbulence stuff goes. The problem is what works with some conditions and grass types, won’t work for other situations. The standard rule of thumb is to run the front of the deck 1/4” or so lower than the back. The theory is the blades will only need to cut the grass to height once and discharge them right away. Unfortunately this doesn’t always work when mulching or mowing such light weight grasses. Walker, Ferris, Exmark and Wright mowers are top of the line mowers, yet they’ll all have similar issues. The issue with ‘ground effect’ or having the deck lifted where air flow gets disrupted is what it is. It’d be like using a vacuum cleaner 3” off the ground. They use extended baffle areas built into the decks to counteract ‘blowout’ or turbulent issues. It may seem counterintuitive but try running with a level deck or experiment lowering the rear of the deck 1/4” or so. Also note that some mulching blades have the lift sails divert the air inward towards the spindle and others angle the air flow outwards. It’s a myth that those mulching blades use the serrated lift sails to cut. They work by keeping the cut grass blades in suspension longer to become chopped up again and again. There’s a point where too much turbulence and disruptive airflow can work against us. If one could put a rubber side skirt around the deck bottom to focus the air better, it’d be ideal. And that’s also exactly what some decks have available- a moveable front baffle height. Some have better luck throttling down the motor a bit to find a sweet spot to get proper air lift balanced. Or use lesser lift blades. I don’t know if they make a ‘sand’ blade for snappers but one of those may be awesome for your situation. Watch some KZread videos by Walker mowers or Wright and it may help understand how finicky all this stuff can be. Lolz I have to tweak things all season long as conditions change. It’s a challenge

I recognize this is 2 years ago, but if anyone is reading this... St. Augustine grass blades will grow interwoven together and will even move throughout the day. In the heat of the day, it'll interweave tighter and at night or early morning will relax. Try to mow during those relaxed timeframes. When mowing, that first pass will eliminate some of the blades (mostly) that are holding others down. After a little while, those blades of grass held down pop up and look like stragglers. This has nothing to do with blade sharpness, it's just the nature of the grass. Of course, keep your blade sharp regardless. It'll take more than one pass to get them all and even on a second pass, you may get additional blades popping up from eliminating more of the grass blades holding down the stragglers. If that even makes sense. Mowing during the evening will help prevent so many straggler blades since the grass is more relaxed and vertical. Mowing shorter will do this as well but it's hard on the grass. I tend to mow higher when this is happening, sometimes up near 5", because if it is happening, then it must be from severe heat and stress, and mowing higher helps keep that stress level down. Of course, mitigate this advice if you're dealing with other things happening with the grass, such as disease or pests.

If this was addressed in the comments, I didn't find it. Raising the front in this manner shouldn't affect the side to side adjustment you addressed in an earlier column, should it? I adjusted my 3009 series side to side, per the manual, and when I started the front to back, I found I didn't have enough chain to lower the rear level (or a little lower) than the front. The side to side procedure works, but it's a pain you know where. I'd rather not do it again. Thanks, John

Hi Jim, at 5;25 you showed my model, 331413KVE. my deck leveling rod doesnt seem to fit and I suspect it was the wrong one because the parts diagram from partstree www.partstree.com/models/331413kve-80430-snapper-33-rear-engine-riding-mower-14hp/rails-lift-arms-cam-lift-25-28-30-33-models-12/ part number 2 was attached to the deck bracket, part number 14, with the bracket installed backwards 180 degrees, which anchors the adjusting rod to the deck. the adusting rod seems to be way too short for the deck by 1.5 inches or so with bracket 14 installed correctly. Is there a chance that the adjusting rod is too short and from the wrong model? this is driving me crazy and I am spending way too much time on this. I don't want to just buy another if all adjusting rods are the same size. thanks. steve

Call Parts tree directly with your model number and tell them you would like to know how long the leveling rod is supposed to be so you know if you have the right one or not they work with their customers and help them out their phone number is on the front page of their website and you will actually get a human to answer the phone if you have any problems let me know. @@jimjackson9381 they said it was 15.3 inches which is the length of the one I have that is too short. according to the partstree diagram the bracket was installed incorrectly. the 15.3 inch rod fits with the bracket installed wrong but the rod apparently is the right size. it would not raise the deck at all and it just sat on the ground with no up or down adjustment available. I adjusted the nut all the way in and all the way out with no movement at all. at the 6 height it goes up about .25 inches maybe so I am pretty sure the levers are connected properly. oh well. I will keep watching videos hope something turns up. maybe the parts tree diagram is wrong and the bracket was properly installed before? the original way would bend the leveling rod with the nut all the way in.

@@jimjackson9381 if you have a second maybe you could look at the diagram on parts tree and tell if the part 14 leveling arm is positioned correctly. I am ready to move on and put it back on craigs.

@@frankanderson9799 yes remove the cover on the top of the mower deck there is a long bar that goes from the front to the back of the deck the nut is on the backside of the deck if you tighten the nut that will raise your deck then you’ll have to change the chains on the back side of the deck.
