    I love hearing that sound everytime we stsrt engines, on every aircraft I've ever worked... These bad boys out out a few thousand (s) volts more spark than the grill ignitor does... But still very similar concept and sound... Except for a bad time when you don't hear it... I guess for both the engine and the grill situation..

    Those "strange" noises that are heard while maneuvering, are the clutches on each drive being engaged/disengaged. The pilot is essentially steering the boat at that point with the independent props...

  • @AB-80X

    @AB-80X

    Жыл бұрын

    Those are not clutches. The boat has crash boxes. What you hear are the PT's being engaged and disengaged via disc brakes on the PT shafts. You put the drives in and out of gear while the PT is not rotating, that's the whole idea behind crash boxes. There are buttons on the shift levers to engage and disengage the brakes as you shift and manoeuvrer the boat.

    Many moons ago, I once had a deep-V slalom ski-boat with single 6-cylinder Mercury outboard. We used to run it in a shallow sea-swell at about 70 mph, and it was a safe, but violent experience hitting every other swell-top - but it was a shed-load of fun. I can’t imagine doing 100 mph on top of that, in anything floating 🤣

  • @AB-80X

    @AB-80X

    Жыл бұрын

    There is no reduction box. There is a power turbine designed to spin at similar rpm as a normal V8, so about 6500 rpm. What ever reduction is there, is just the normal reduction in the drives. Your story does not add up. Usually ships that use gas generators as propulsion units, being it engines like the LM1500 or LM2500, don't need a reduction in that magnitude. Heck, even if you drove the prop straight off of the HP shaft which you NEVER do, that would be about 9000 rpm at full chuff. Normally a PT on an LM 1500 and LM2500 spin at about 3000 rpm or so, so in order for a big commercial or naval vessel to achieve useable prop speed at say 150-300 rpm depending on ship size etc. it would only need a 10:1 or 20:1 reduction. If it was a water jet propelled ship, then the PT shaft would go straight to the input shaft of the jet pump without a reduction.

    They were not out of anything. They are simply marinized T-53's from surplus. They run an automated startup. They use crash boxes with disc brakes.

    Jeez, that "SHIP" is ALOT of machined parts. So here I am building a 100 H.P 100cc ultra lite bike for Bonneville. (building for for 1H.P per CC) Feeling overwhelmed at how daunting it is to be designing/machining titanium components in my basement, at the ragged edge of sanity. Spending endless days to make and balance a few high stress components within 20mg ......😱I feel much better now after watching this vid.

    It's the power turbines spooling up and breaking. The gearbox behind each engine is a crash box, so they cannot be shifted if the input shaft is spinning. There's a disc brake like on a car mounted to the input shaft, which is activated during shifting and when in neutral.

    Al Copeland had a turbine Skater in the early 90s. His had a little gas-powered kicker motor for getting in and out of the harbor. One day they couldn't get the kicker motor stared so they packed up and went home. Refused to go out without a functioning kicker motor.

    I can see now why no one responded to my post on HELL FIRE. Speedy Jeff have you been able to get your boat up to WOT?. actually I don't think you have enough room to get HELLFIRE upto full throttle lake Havasu is only 13 miles long, just 1 more QUESTION did your crew remove the After Burners, I'm actually looking at a Turbine River Racer from New Zealand that will do 140 mph in 4 inches of water and just like your Turbine I'm going to burn E 85 in it. Because I'm not a Rich person.

    Afternoon gentlemen, I thought I heard the name of this boat was HELLFIRE???. I use to have a friend on FACEBOOK that also had a orange boat with 2 x 1850 gas Turbines was also named HELLFIRE ?. HE was based out of Ohio but did most boating in Florida?. So your name is Speedy Jeff?. Do you trailer that boat around the country?. Or is it's home right there in Lake Havasu?. Have a great day and be safe
