300 Gallon Custom Aquarium - Project Intro

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I'm excited to announce the beginning of a new project, a 300 gallon custom aquarium to replace my existing 220. In this video I give my reasons for the project, as well as my decision making process for selecting the tank I ordered. This will be the first in a series of videos about the project.

    Love that big ole fish, cant wait to see the new tank! My friend has a massive pair of bay snook in a 10x3x3 . Its decorated similar to yours but with a lot of floating salv and pistia. They share it with about 60/70 endlers ; the endlers are too small to interest the snook (1 inch compared to 2 ft) and also act as a dither . It makes for a really fascinating display.

    I like the 500 gallons I see out there with its 4' depth. Just gives big fish room to turn. 2' deep means..you can reach the bottom ,although 3' looks better. So I guess my ideal home is like Corys 800 gallon. But!..2 ' also means much easier to clean and light plants. I have a 8' x2x2 240..my old beater..35 years old plus and Acrylic. Its a tank,survived earthquakes- to me dropping it over the decades.

    It’s on my main floor. It’s perpendicular to the joists that sit directly on a load bearing cement wall down in the crawl space. Those are pretty short, maybe 10 feet. But I still have the floor reinforced in front of the tank just to be safe. I wouldn’t put a tank this size on a second level if that’s what you’re asking.

    how is your tsnk fantastically bright at the sand and nice and dark higher up ? to get that knd of illumination on the substrate my entire tank looks clinically bright and with a black background it shows every bit of debris its infuriationg ....i can make the whole tank less bright easily but your tank is lighter at the bottom thats insane 😂

    I have a 340 and a 500 acrylic, I will never go back to glass. The key decision criteria for me were 1) Breakage. Splitting at the seams and glass cracking happens with a much higher frequency with glass than acrylic. 2) Weight- took 6 big guys to move my 500 acrylic (600 lbs), would not have been able to move a glass tank with even 10 guys. Also, don't be too excited about lifetime warranties on glass tanks. Ask Adam C. and I have had one failure on a large tank too. The lifetime warranty is like having a lifetime warranty on a heart transplant (with a free replacement heart), you do not want to go through the pain, the expense, and the destruction of a glass tank break in your home, and get compensated a replacement tank, or your original purchase price. You are still out a lot of money from home damage and headache big time. Don't want to be negative, but these are realities I have dealt with as I scaled up my tanks. Taking scratches out of acrylic is easy, on the outside of the tank I can do it in 15 minutes. I can even take them out on the inside with the tank full of water and fish. Acrylic is so much clearer too and the fish look better. Don't want to "rain on your parade" but I had to pipe in....

    Adam’s tank, your tank that broke, I doubt were of a comparable quality to what this tank will be. Wait until you see the footage about how they make them. You’re right about the weight though. Not looking forward to that part.

    The issue with the best constructed glass aquarium comes down to the fact that silicone and glass adhesion has a "shelf life", and the outward force necessary to crack glass is somewhere near 1/10 that of acrylic. The best manufactured glass tank years ago was Oceanic and I had one last 20 years before you could see the silicone starting to peel back from the glass at the seams. Luckily it was in my basement office on a concrete slab. Oceanic and a lot of the other manufacturers have gone out of business over the years due to warranty claims. I watched the video on how your tank will be made. Quite impressive. The fact that silicone and glass adhesion has a shelf life is a materials compatibility issue, not a manufacturing issue. Acrylic seams are actually welded together using liquid acrylic, so there are not material shelf life issues. Bottom line, your glass tank will likely give you many years of good service, but the facts around glass tank breakage and seam splitting for a lot of people are an "inconvenient truth" because acrylic costs so much more.

  • @HalfManHalfCichlid

    @HalfManHalfCichlid

    @@yallaharab247 As you get above 75 gallons the glass gets thicker and heavier to handle the additional weight and stress. This is why the tank cost goes up so much above 55 gallons or so. The $1 per gallon sales as petsmart for example only go to 55 gallon tanks for this reason.

    @@HalfManHalfCichlid yeah, knowing that glass is more than twice the weight the same amount of thickness and square-foot; it is less clear, less insulating and the other stuff you said. Acrylic for me.

    Cool plan, glad that you can do this way in US ;) You're right with sump, doing as well with my 2 300L Check out roll filter from this channel: kzread.info To me it is the right direction, this mechanical filtration simply put out material from water , decreasing decay and nitrate generation at the end. For the biological part, you certainly know already moving auto-washing system as helix, but sure you could test other stuff Have fun!
