Pierre, I recently picked up a 1988 260e out of Philly. Im the 3rd owner after 2 previous elderly owners. 74,000 miles on the car and it gets better running every day so far. The 2.6 is a really fun engine and packs a real punch, which surprised me. Also the w124, compared to most modern cars is a pretty small car, that is a surprise when I park next to a Focus or an Altima etc.. People, dont look over the 2.6, they are cheaper than the 3ltr, but just as fun. I know because I also own a 300te

We had a 116 450SE owned by my dad followed by the 1977 123 300D he bought after getting so many speeding tickets in the 450! The 123 just did not handle as well as the 116. Fast-forward to 1980 and my Johannesburg BMW 528 company car. Handling was just excellent. MB caught up with the 201 and 124 and the new multi-link rear suspension. This is no knock on the 123 but they are a little soft in the French manner a la Peugeot 504 for my tastes.

I am on my third W123 and third W124. From a safety standpoint, since all US spec W124's had drivers airbag and ABS (braking), I will take a W124 anyday over a W123. I live in a rainy climate, and I find the W123 windshield wipers a little old school compared to the W124 mono wiper. W123 requires valve adjustment. Don't think that is necessary on any W124. W123 has awesome over the shoulder rear view when driving and backing. W124 has rear headrests, but can (and did) add to W123. ALL 1992-1995 W124 have bad eco wiring.

  • @W124performance

    @W124performance

    4 жыл бұрын

Minor correction: AFAIK, the 1992-1993 models with M103 engine did not have the bad / eco-junk wiring. This problem affected all 124 models with HFM or LH-SFI fuel injection, but not CIS. Most of the harnesses are available new from Mercedes at tolerable prices, and the new harnesses (and ETA's) have improved insulation so they won't fail again. Many cars already have had this repair done, you can check the harness & ETA before purchase if this is a concern. For the couple of harnesses not available from MB anymore, Blue Ridge MB rebuilds them.

As much as I love my 123, there's a romance about the 124 being the twighlight of classic MBs. That's why I got one of those too. A 300CE that it is literally one of the best driving cars I've ever been in. The power steering feels like rack and pinion, the acelerator has perfect and precise response, and it hugs the road elegantly for a coupe. It has about the maximum technology I like in a car though, but no glove box or cupholders. Can't have everything.

I have a love hate with a w124. I have a 300 sel and yes, I did the head gasket and guides and chain at 270k miles. But the room under the hood really makes a m103 a treat to work on. I also prefer the room of the s class, and with mine being a 5 speed manual, it's a suprising good drive and gets 28mpg highway. Now the ce coupe is a great alternative to an sec and handles better bit the interiors aren't as nice or a durable as a nice w126.

I personally liked the 124 better than the 123. Even though the 123 engines were bulletproof and their quality is amazing, stylishly they were getting long in the tooth. I remember adamantly when the 1986 300E hit the showrooms and it just looked so much more modern. I particularly liked the chiseled body lines with the aerodynamic flush headlights with wipers. My favorite would be the 1988-1989 300CE coupes. Smoke silver or petrol blue green exteriors.

A Mercedes-Benz is a true classic and never gets long in the tooth. The owners, perhaps, not the cars. The W123 was way better engineered than the W124. Ask anyone who can work with his hands : the W124 was a cost cutting exercise from the boardroom down, and this is a proven fact, documented history.

Rear suspension stuff just never really comes up on a w123, apart from spheres. Front suspension seems the same but all the multilink and subframe rear bushings seem to go bad on the 124 and it is a huge pita to drop the subframe and redo everything. Lots of interior parts go bad on the 124, tabs break off and seat trim pieces break. The 123 seems to have more metal in the trim pieces so they hang in there better. Both models seem to fill up with water in various ways, so that's a toss up. Handling is ok on the 123 with any sort of lower profile 225 tire. But the 124 has more modern power. A 94 e420 is a great car...when it works. A w123 pretty much always just works unless the ac fuse melts the fuse box or the starter goes out. Finally, a 123 with anti lock brakes is a rare find. That is a huge safety perk for the 124 under any sort of panic braking or icing conditions. And the airbag is another win for the 124.

Hi Pierre, I'm currently restoring a W123 300TD wagon , to use as a daily driver...I've been working on the engine recently, hoping to get it driving soon....I've rebuilt my injectors, adjusted the valve clearance, ( they were all very tight ) , I also checked the timing chain for stretch, it was 7 degrees past TDC, it feels tight enough on the sprocket, so i'm hoping to drive it for a little while, and change it in the summer.......My question is, given what I've recently done to the car, should I check my injection pump timing, and am wondering, if you have any plans to do a video on this topic, I've been reading about the drip method, but am a little bit lost on exactly how to do it......loving you videos, and your passion for these cars, this is my first one, and I'm already hooked......Best Wishes For the New Year....Thanks...Michael

I'm looking to buy a 1991 300 TD W124 in Europe with US spec. the guy says it has 150 horsepower but that doesn't sound right to me since the 1993-1995 TD have 150 hp and not the older ones. I own a W124 (E220 5 Spd manual), a W123 (300D NA Auto) and a W115 (240D 4spd manual). I think the W115 is hands down the best in terms of road feel, presence, durability and serviceability. The W123 is by far the most comfortable to drive and the easiest to own and repair. The W124 feels the lightest, sportiest and is definitely the sharpest handler of the three. Each has its unique characteristics and the DNA that links them is apparent whenever I drive one after the other. This same DNA does not exist on the W210 and beyond - Mercedes lost the plot and has yet to find it again. What's worse, they're reducing their after sales support for these cars.

Sittar Thailand they are a pain in the ass! The m104.980 or m104.981 are awesome if they run correctly. But anything with them always seems to be a pain. Maybe because of different metals

How hard is it to change out the evaporator in the w124 cause I may have a leak in my 300TD and I do not now about my 300D. both 1987. The 300D is R12 and I converted the 300td to R134. I was told you have to tear the whole dash about to get to them?

How much horsepower does the 300 TD have ? I'm looking to buy a 1991 300 TD W124. US spec. the guy says it has 150 horsepower but that doesn't sound right to me since the 1993-1995 TD have 150 hp and not the older ones.

Pierre, in terms of handling do you think the W124 is much higher than the W123? I ask this because I never drove either, but I have a W201, which I imagine has a similar handling to the W124. So is the multilink arrangement on the back and macpherson on the front really much higher than the W123 suspension arrangement? Which set of work has better handling?

I have a gas 201, a gas 210, two diesel 124's , and several 123's. The 124's, when well sorted, drive like they are carved from a single block of solid steel. The 201 is very similar, but currently not as well sorted.

Martin especially is correct about this. the 123 is more about toughness and durability over bad driving conditions. While the 124 can accomplish this, it's abilities are more sport oriented

W124 is bulletproof and modern and faster and sexy ..we all know that the OM606 fits in many other cars and gives the owner what they want. I have seen more of that then w123 although 123 was a childhood uprising and was a popular car especially in Africa than the 124. Who knows many units Mercedes produced on 123 vrs 124 and why. This is tough because it like your gf and mother are drowning in the pool whom u gona save first.. i will chose 124 Or we should all VOTE!

So many supposed experts cannot even pronounce Mercedes-Benz. So, what do they really know?? It is NOT Mir say dees at all. And Benz is Bentz.... It is Deutsch, not English. Do never Anglicise names; it makes you look daft. Like calling Yeshua "Jesus," Yakov "James" or Céfas "Peter." Anglophones cannot pronounce Moskva and call it Moss Cow. See what they do to Sputnik or München, Paraparaumu becomes Parraparam. Good riddance, aren't there schools anywhere? I live in Africa, where we were taught English RP. And it isn't my mother tongue.
