    I bought my W123 1984 230CE pillarless coupè with 190,000 miles here in Australia in December 2022 for under $AUD 18,000. In excellent condition. Has the MBTex seats in excellent condition. Came with receipts & service manual from 1989, original tools & leather tool pouch & the original rear window transfer sticker from Thomas' in Nottingham. The car definitely turns heads. Same as the blue/silver pillarless coupè featured in the photo near the end. The car is so beautiful and wonderful to drive!

    Back in the day my boss bought a brand new 230TE auto in 1983,in yellow. Felt as solid as a brick,no fancy gimmicks (sunroof and roof bars apart) . He kept it for 15 years, handing it down the family chain and maintaining it at mercedes 👍

    The estate sunroof , being manual , was no fancy gimmick . The W123 T model never offered an electric sunroof because there was no space for the motor ; you had to wait until the W124 came out for that . I'd never buy a car without a sunroof .

    In about 2000 I bought an estate 200T at auction for £130 (plus £50 commission) I did Lands End - John O Groats in it and also used it to transport all the stuff for a new bathroom. Sold it a few months later for a the princely sum of £350 - really nice car. The same car would probably be worth about £5k now in the same, slightly scruffy condition!

    Having seen a good one at Mathewsons Auctions go for £6600, I have just paid £4600 for a 200 saloon (with carb) pretty much as in the video above, in the same colour. 195,000 miles. Only things that need fixing are the central locking, and the radio doesn't work. It has all new suspension components, complete new brakes, tyres, major service, years MOT and it drives . . . . . like a 1980's car! But I drove cars then and will soon get used to it. I bought it having got totally rassed off with stupid computers on modern cars.

    I had a 1986 240d estate in sky blue back in the early 00's with the manual transmission. Used it as a daily for a couple of years with the only issue being the vacuum central locking was goosed and it wouldn't lock at all. I think i paid about £900 for it with about 170k on the clock. No chance of getting one for that money in usable condition today. Brilliant cars.

    @@Mr.Riffian I just got an 80 4 speed. 😄 I couldn't pass it up because its really clean and rust free with 145k on it. Totally new world to me, I'm glad I semi-blindly chose one of the best ones and I've had a good time learning something new!

    They are reliable if properly maintained - just like any other car. Unfortunately, maintenance and repair of a Mercedes is going to be expensive and competent mechanics difficult to find. As for the W123, many parts are no longer available from Mercedes and you may have to search out used parts from Germany. You really need to be your own mechanic and be prepared for the car to be off the road periodically waiting for parts or service. In other words, an old Mercedes should probably not be your only car. Yes, I've owned a W123.

    Great review on the W126. I'm in the US, and have driven mostly W126 diesels for the past 27 years, but I've had a few W123s. Great cars. I have a 1984 300SD with over 750K miles (not sure what is in kilometers, but well over a million), that served me well. You pointed out all the rust points in the W123. I still have two; a 1980 240D manual, and a 1981 240D automatic. Only thing I'd disagree with you on is the manual tranny, With only 67 horsepower, I much prefer the manual four-speed transmission. Great video. I hope enthusiasts will keep these great cars going, whether gas or diesel, auto or manual. They were some of the best cars ever built.

    I have a 280CE, I had looked at 4 cars before going for the one I have in Jan 2020. Keen DIYer. With this experience I can say this is really an excellent guide. Only thing to add, and kinda touched on, they were very will rustproofed undeneath, the underseal is almost 3mm thick. Unfortunately, this can actually hide rust that you will not see until you start chiping away at the underseal. Also take note of the drains as mentioned. Also the ones just at the front scuttle. Fantastic cars!

    I currently daily drive a 1991 Mercedes 190E, its really sold me on the mercedes brand. Im now looking to replace this with a W123. I have no doubt at all that it will make a reliable daily drive.

    W123 and W124 mercedes truly being mercedes in times were their only direct comparison wasn't a BMW or an Audi, but the 200 and 700 series from Volvo (that other carmaker with bulletproof engineering in the day)

    Bought a mint one owner 96k miler 230e on a X plate for 500 quid about 15 years ago. The only issue was the wayward steering. Handed over £90 to a local specialist and it was perfect. It was on a par with Joe's £12,000 example here. Prices really have gone stratospheric.

    I want to make sure you all know my experience with replacing the little 60A OEM alternator with the powerful 115A Bosch AL129X alternator off the Saab 9000. It;s a tight fit but replaces the too-little-for-AC original directly with no modifications except rewiring. The original field energizer circuit works great and 14.2VDC with every load in the car at max setting! Just do it! Hook the little wire from the dash light to the FIELD terminal and use a stranded copper #2 wire from the output directly to the battery + terminal. 115A will melt the original alternator output to the distribution terminal block. The wire is too small. Clean up all the ground terminals. Brand new AL129X is $273 from Amazon with no core return charge.

    Great review!! Let’s put the show on the other foot for a minute. There are many W123 models looking for a good owner! W123 models need to be wary of potential owners that cheap out on replacement parts. Owners that are neglectful! Owners that are just wanting to lowball their current owner, and then flip them for a quick profit! 🤣🤣🤣 No but seriously, I bought my 280ce knowing it needed two new floor pans welded in, and I’m glad I didn’t walk away. I love every defect on the car that I am fixing and restoring it to its original splendor! It is so very gratifying and rewarding! I would say get a W123 that you can put your own love and touches to, that directly correlates to your ability to bring out your best version of the car. Buy to your abilities. 😎👍

    I drive a 230 TE from 1981. It has just 300,000 km and has no oil consumption. Only has some minor rust issues in the wheelarchs. Will drive it for another 200,000 km.

    The only W123s that I am aware of that had timing chain problems were the 200 and 230E with the M102 engine. When this motor came out it had a single row chain, that was prone to stretching. Mercedes soon realised they had a problem and changed the M102 motors in production to twin row. Some cars that had ongoing problems with the single row chain Mercedes paid for a twin row conversion kit to be fitted under warranty. With the M102 engine you can see by taking the oil filler cap off whether it has the single or twin row tming chain.

    Well , about 5 decades old and there can be some rust and dried out bushes ...... Wonder if modern Mercedeses will last 2 decades ! These 123s were absolute winners , the cream of the crop , as were their succesor , the 124 . Unforgettable !

    I bought one about two years ago. Yellow 280E with over 400,000kms on the clock. 1977, one owner since new, and now me. I'd probably go for a later model 4 cylinder 230E if I had to recommend one though, although, I do enjoy driving the top dog with it's extra chrome bits and the best performance. And like all old cars, brace yourself for non-stop fluid leaks from here there and everywhere. Leaks didn't improve in most vehicles until the 1990's imo.

    I had quite a few of these in the days you could pick them up for peanuts and loved them. When I decided to buy another 6 years ago, I was lucky to find a one owner 230E in factory black. I will never sell it, as it's so hard to find a good one now

    A fully sorted, ready for daily use, low mileage example will cost you upwards of 15-17k today. There is a guy from Swansea by the name of Mark Cosovich (who is a bit of a legend amongst W123 enthusiasts), who will sell you a fully restored "as new" (or at least as good as it can be with original parts) W123 for around 25-30k.

    Good video. These are so much more appealing than much of the swoopy oversized mobile laptops Mercedes makes now. However you've really got to love them or be sufficiently flush to justify the money/time of having one now. Cars of this age and relative complexity are just going to be increasingly unreliable and hard to run, no matter how well built they were. You'll increasingly work for the car, rather than it working for you.

    I bought my 1984 300D in December 1984. It was a dealer demo from the Freiburg, Germany dealership. It had less than 1000 km on it, but since it was used I could export it to San Francisco. The dealer made all the arrangements to ship it and I picked it up about 3 months later from the port ins San Francisco. I had to do a few mods to make it street legal in the US. It had the legendary 5 cylinder diesel and 4 speed manual transmission. I put 225,000 miles on it. The only major service costs were one clutch and synchros in the transmission. Unfortunately someone ran a stop sign into me and insurance totaled it. Someone has said that the W123 diesel may have been the greatest machine ever made. I would not argue. I have had 3 W124’s and 3 W210’s. They are great cars too, but not quite the same. I still own my 1990 300CE classic coupe, and a 2001 E430 Sport. But the current Mercedes are a far cry from the great ones of the past and I doubt I would ever buy one.

    Hi, thanks for the video! I have a question: how much smoke coming out of the exhaust do you consider normal? I know diesels will put out a little black smoke but I'm in the market for one and saw one put out a lot of smoke. It was mostly black, not blue or white. Thanks!

    Had a 280E for quite a few years, it literally rusted away before my eyes, still can’t believe how Mercedes made such a mistake with regard to the rustproofing. Yes it was reliable but I have to admit that the quality and durability of some parts and interior plastics left a lot to be desired… I had a MK2 Granada 2.8i Ghia at the same time, was far more rust resistant, was well built and durable.

    I had one back in the day, over rated for their supposed bomb proof engineering. A vague steering box that needed replacing every 60K miles. 2.3 Petrol with cam problems. I went from the W123 to the far superior 190E. A car truly engineered.

    Interesting, the 190e and the 230e have the same motor the M102E, just one was 1.9 litre the other 2.3 technically they should be equally reliable..

    The wheel bearing can be replaced at home and the sockets are worth the money, Seats are rebuilt springs for sale no really big problem for the average Joe. Avoid the automatics, a lot of my friends had vacuum leaks to solenoid intern problems.

    Still have w123 200d buy it for 200€ or 300 dollars the owner did not know the value of that reliable car changed the oil and get new battery till now 4 month did not let me down and i used for daily use pretty much some rust planning to restored in future and i will own it for ever

    Hmmm , yes they are nice looking cars , and the bodywork was good at the time , but while still good cars there are a few negatives and I wouldn't describe them of the apex of Mercedes-Benz models . I'd reserve that tag either for the W100 type 600 , any of the SL models ( my mother had a W113 230SL and I've had a R107 450SL and R129 300SL-24 ) , or if you are looking at more recent models either the W126 or W140 . The W201 gets an honourable mention too . Returning to the W123 , and negatives , the first , and most trivial , which I heard at the launch event , was the change to plastic door handles , from the metal ones used on the previous W114/5 models Having owned several W123s from new , including 280E/CE and TE , as well as a 230E saloon and driven most other models in the range ; it was immediately clear that they were built for the American market with their soft , floaty ride and barge like handling ; nothing like the sharp handling of the previous models . While my W114 280E was a bit softer in its handling ( and I bought that car at 3 years old with 34000 miles , so the suspension wasn't worn out , the one previous owner had been a company director and the car was chauffeur driven ) this was simply due to the heavy M110 engine up front , but mine was a limited edition 1975 model with the very rare 5 speed manual close ratio gearbox and something of a rocket ship . Prior to that I'd had a W115 220/8 , which had been my dad's from new , and that one had such sharp , taut handling , excellent turn in to corners and still a very smooth ride that it was utterly amazing to anyone I took out in it . Yes , the earlier cars rusted , but the /8 or 'new generation' as they were known , were designed in the 1960's . However , those were cars designed very much for the European market and keen drivers , so it was a huge disappointment when the W123 came out and I found they were boulevard cruising barges , designed for the USA . I met Rudi Uhlenhaut at the launch event at Prestonfield House in 1975 , and on commenting on the handling , it was he who told me the reason . The later W124 , which replaced the W123 went back to much better handling and cornering , and also reached much higher levels of performance , either with the AMG modified versions , or with the V-8 500E/E500 which was assembled by Porsche . There had been plans to offer a V-8 version of the W123 , but the 1973 fuel crisis put paid to that before the model was even launched ; however lots of people have retrofitted the M117 5.0 V-8 into W123s with much success , and there are a couple of specialists in the UK who do this . As for rust points ; one of the most common areas for rust is in the inner front wings , just behind the headlamps ; also if you can take out the trim panels above each front footwell and check the bottom of the plenium chambers , behind that firewall you were talking about - when the drain holes behind each bonnet hinge fall up with leaves , as they often do , then water overflows into said chamber and causes issues . Oh , on the subject of bonnet hinges , check that they are well lubricated and not seized - this is another common problem , and you have to remove the front wings to replace them . Re the sunroof drains , the rear ones , in the C pillars , are prone to block and the tell tale sign of this is wet rear carpets . On the estates , the rear quarter panels , below the load bay side windows are prone to rust - open up the storage compartments each side of the load area and check inside for rust , put your hand up inside to feel around just below the window for rust . Water leaks in the load areas can come from dried out tail lamp seals , and water pooling in the wells can be caused by blocked drains , another common problem as the rubber drains catch road dirt . On the estates , the rear hydropneumatic suspension has two main faults ; the first is rotting of the hydraulic pipes in the area above the rear suspension , brake pipes and fuel lines will fail in this area too ; the best way to fix is to remove the whole rear subframe and put the new pipes in ; the other fail points are the oleo-gas spheres which just need to be replaced , and the control valve which attaches to the rear anti-roll badge . This system is still pretty simple compared to the all round hydropneumatic systems as fitted to the W116 450SEL 6.9 or the W126 560SEL ( which I owned an example of for about a year ) . As for the interiors , most of the materials can be obtained from Klaus Hermann Mayer ( KHM ) in Germany , the website is www.cabrio.de ; they also do convertible tops and carpet sets in original materials for most MB models . Other useful specialists include Heinrich Niemoller in Mannheim , DB Depot and SLS , both in Hamburg , but always go first to the dealership as it is amazing what is still readily available for all Classic MB , and I go back to the Ponton models of the 1950s ( my first car was a 219 , W105 ) and the Fintail series of the 1960s ( again grew up with a W110 as the family car , and later owned a W111 of my own ) . For anyone considering a W123 , before you do so , also look at the W124 series . They share the classic styling , bullet proof build quality , refinement , and also , important in this day and age , fuel economy ; the later M103 and M104 engines are much more fuel efficient than the M110 ( which most people would struggle to break 20 mpg in ; and I'm sorry but I could never bring myself to own a diesel , even for the better mpg , the utter slowness of them I could never live with , although I did try twice - once with a W124 E250D , which had the 20V 5 cylinder engine and went decently , but the gearbox was awful , and a W203 C270 CDI , which was the worst and most unreliable car I've ever owned with failed injectors , thermostat , the turbo failed after i sold it , unreliable electrically operated central locking , tailgate wiper seized up - all this on a 5 year old car ! ) . All of my W124s , and indeed most of my cars , have gone on to cover significant mileages ; my 300TE-24 got to 475,000 miles before someone crashed into it while it was parked , and I've had countless cars up beyond 200,000 ; again people think you need to buy Diesel for longevity , but Mercedes-Benz petrol engines last just as long as their Diesel ones . Some of the smaller engines ( M102 ) carried over into the W124 , before being replaced by the M111 later on ; and that M102 , which is a fantastic engine , so smooth and refined for a four cylinder , also went into the W201 as the 190 and 109E ; never officially offered in this country , arguably the best 190 was the 190E 2.3 , with the 2.3L version o the M102 ; I converted a late 190LE ( which had the 1.8L engine , which had its shortcomings ) into a 2.3 , along with the taller differential from the 2.6 ( which I also owned at one point ) and it transformed the car , with almost the performance of my 190E 2.6 but returning 45 mpg in quiet refinement . In fact , the only reason I got rid of that car was upon the birth of my son , the 190 back doors and seating were too cramped to get an infant carrier in ; so I bought my first W126 - a 500SEL , with the extra long back doors ; I subsequently had , at the same time an early W126 280SE and a 430SE , and had many years previously had a W116 280SE ; latterly I had a W140 S320 , so have had a few S Class models as well . One thing I'm shocked at in the video are the prices now being asked for W123s !!! Twelve grand for a 230E that is more than they cost new ! I remember at that launch event back in 1976 , the entry level 200 was about seven grand ; my dad ordered a new W123 250 in Maple Yellow , very much a colour of the time , with black interior , which i hated , and that car , with options , cost him a little over 10 grand ; and a base spect 230E , according to my 1980 price list was £9500.73 including VAT . I guess what I'm saying is , if shopping for a Classic Merc , don't stop at one model ; there are lots to choose from out of the second half of the 20th century ; I've either owned or driven most of them ; so look at all your options and choose carefully .

    Great review thanks. I would say for daily usage including fast roads and motorways the 230E is probably the best choice. The diesels, excepting the 300 turbo diesel, are quite slow is gaining speed, and getting out of a T junction or merging onto a motorway can be nerve-wracking. The 280E is great fun, with huge amounts of power, but it is very thirsty (18-22 mpg) and most of its usefulness is at the top end, making the 230E almost as handy.

    I had a 230e but could never get it to run right, even after having the fuel distributor rebuilt. No-one knows how to work on the complex (and outdated) fuel injection system on them. Engine, transmission and suspension repairs are very expensive and specialists to do the work fast disappearing.

    You'd be doing well to break 20 mpg with a 280 - I had them from new and they were thirsty beasts . At least petrol was cheap back then .

    Hi, looking for clarification. You said the 230e was available with a 2.8 engine? Is this correct? Does this explain why the badge says 280 but the engine is 4 cyl?

    Very good video, thank you. A few remarks. First an old Benz without sunroof is like strawberries without cream: it can be done, yet is no fun 🙂. Seriously now... I agree the W123 is most likely the best 'common' Benz. But... prices are going through the roof and roadholding is not the best. Neither is steering. A few years ago I was again in the market for an older Benz. Like many Benz people I always excluded the Benzes from 1994 - 2003/4. These cars have horrendous rust problems due to the use of waterbased paints. However... up to the W210 they are still designed and engineered like the Benzes of old. They even have the same age related rust spots as you explained for the W123... But... especially the later W124, W202 and W210 do have better (petrol) engines, beter steering and roadholding. And, especially basic W202 and W210 are still reasonably priced. I did bite the bullet and got myself a very basic W202 C180, yes with sunroof, even a steel one. Which was a little more expensive back in the day than the more common glass sunroof. Cosmetically it is not perfect and yes there is rust on the arches. Yet no rust on important places. I did mend it, rust converter and Hammerite does a nice job. Not perfect, yet it is a daily driver and I do not have to worry about a few scratches when I leave it in the supermarket parking lot. So... if you are in the market for an old Benz, do check out the W202 and W210 and drive them. They really do drive better than the W123. And go for a sunroof and enjoy!

    Bought my first one in 2001 Birmingham car auction for £250 in immaculate condition had a 300td estate a 300 lwb ex funeral car a 240d very slow and another 5 230e now got a signal red 2 owner from new 70000 miles 1982 230e brilliant cars

    its hard to find a rust free w123.. i recommend buying a w123 that has some rust or so. doesn't mean its a BAD car. I accidentally bought a 240D that had rust on some parts of the car, but the passenger floor is rotted out from rain since it was a south fl car. but i mainly focused on working the mechanical and reliable aspects of it.

    Had aa '77, loved it. But it was an Ohio car, and rusted out twice before I had to give up on it. I think later cars had better rustproofing.

    The best of the line was the Wagon made in Bremen, not Sindlefingen (sp). All wagons were made there and the quality control was the best in the M-B/Daimler factories. The best of the wagons are the 1980-82 non Turbo. PS: Former District Manager San Francisco Region M-B of No America.

    Thanks for the heads up re 1980 1982 being the best. In that case, I plan to get three “1981” 230 W123’s to hire out. One Saloon, one Estate, and one Coupe. I may get 280’s but I think the 230’s are almost as good but with better mpg.

    …are they still on the road on your side of the world? I’m in the Silicon Valley and they have dwindled in the last few years. I’m still driving my 1985 300TD which I inherited back in 1989 which is still under 75K miles.

    Paying over £10k for a w123 just doesn’t make sense to me. The w126 gives you so much for more “bang for your buck” but is now much cheaper to buy than most w123s in the UK.

    I love both, they just have a different feel. One is a luxury merc with its 5.5 litre engine. The other is a more down to earth classic looking merc which has a 70s look rather than the 80s King Kong if the streets look.

    i own one 1979 w123 e200 , upgrade them to a CDI , mileage only 70k, And i Drove Her like a Lunatic : over the Highway I could drive her 160km/hour it would be nicer to have the 5th gear she could go beyond 180km/hour i guess, but it only have 4 max, very very stable car, the intake of petrol is around 1litre for 7km which i think its kinda alright for an old car: especially im living in BAd traffic country Indonesia. This is the best comfortable car i have comparing to Toyota Fortuner and the Honda freed. I would love to have Couple ,

    I brought a 280ce (coupe) for £8k spent £5k on it. It’s been valued at £20-25k plus! only 67k on the clock. It is in very good condition.

    I bought one for 5k in a running clean condition with some body rust. Family owned with 200k miles on the clock. I will need another 5k to make it mint. 280 CE

    you dont need to change the timing chain that often its not a belt. timing chains have no issues going to 300,000km

    Absolutely, most insurance companies (like Lancaster Insurance!) can get you a policy with ample mileage and coverage - I daily drive mine and it's great for it :D

    Agree 100%. Owned a 1980 300D for 8 years in the 90’s and most reliable car I’ve ever owned. ZERO issues! Wife’s 2013 E350 was garbage. We sold it 18mths after purchase and we’ll never buy a new Merc again.

    Spent over a year searching till I found the perfect one, Antracite Gray, Black M-B Tex, 100% rust free, 150k perfect mechanical condition, all new auspension components, just weeks after purchase some scumbag nodding out on Heroin slammmed into the back while parked in front of my house. ☹️😢😡😡😡😡

    The series 123 & 124 probably the greatest cars ever build. I don't understand why Mercedes don't build cars like that any more. I won't buy a modern day Mercedes because it's utter trash.

    Nope! The 240D is the pick of the bunch for me. Less is more when it comes to old Mercs. The 240D, if serviced well, will take you anywhere you want to go, will always start and has a simplicity missing from any modern car.

    @@martynlennon9715 I do daily it. I did have a BMW E90 320d as a daily driver, but as time went on that got used less and less. So I sold it. And I would love a 200D myself, but they are SO rare it's almost impossible to find one.

    Absolutely! Just slather the rustproofing on and regularly check underneath - nothing can kill a W123 mechanically, but rust certainly can...
