148k on my 2012 Volt, still going strong, bought it at 96k exactly 1yr ago, lots of roadtrips. Car has never let me down, I try to keep it on mountain road on long roadtrips. Nothing has been wrong on the car, only oil changes, drive almost only in L mode and still haven’t had to change breaks.

Underrated doesn't mean someone gave it poor ratings, it means that it's not valued as much as it's worth. The kinds of people who should appreciate it and want it tend to overlook it as if it doesn't exist. It isn't treated as a viable competitor to other vehicles that target a similar consumer when it really should be.

umm, oil is hydroscopic, meaning it obsorbes moisture. even if all 60k miles were done on electric power, you still should have done 6 oil changes minimum just due to age of the vehicle.

Thank you for posting this video. You were pretty smart to pick up a couple of these vehicles. I've never been what anyone would call a GM guy, but I've seen and heard way too many good things about the Volt to say they don't deserve one heck of a lot of kudos for the work they put into these cars. Eventually I plan to buy a Tesla, but it's looking like I'll buy one more interim car before I do that, and I've been very seriously close to making that car a Volt. Your video here has finally pushed me across the line and convinced me it would be a good idea. So unless finances and reviews or my fit in the car determine a Prius Prime would work better for me, my next car will be a Volt before I can finally go full electric once and for all. What an amazing piece of engineering for GM. You know what really did it for me with this video in particular? How quiet the car still is with over 300k miles on it. That was my one concern, because I'm too OCD to be able to put up with a car that squeaks and rattles all the time while I'm driving it. If even one of these cars can run up the odometer that high and still be squeak and rattle free, I'm convinced they all can. Thank you for posting a video that had basically all the pieces I was missing in making my decision, I really appreciate it. Congratulations on your cars, too! That's something you can be proud of too.

I have 500 miles on my 2018 volt. So far it’s great. The generator has barely kicked on. So far it’s been 95% batteries. That 5% is from the dealer giving me a drained battery and also way below freezing morning start ups. So far I’m giving this car a 4.5/5.

Erick Belmer hi Erick thanks for the speedy reply. honestly, I think it is a no brainer at this point. the volt is a better choice. I also have available charging at work as well. those mpg averages are much higher than what I get with my vehicle. plus I do 55mph and under to get 52mpg. Oh and also, the volt uses premium gas right ?

ricardo howell hey man, well I commute about 121 a day and I charge it every day but still burn gasoline for an average of about 42 mpg. I'd say the Prius is better for highway mpg compared to the volt. However the volt is very good being charged up and only driven about 30-40 miles in town. It also uses premium gas not regular though I'm not sure if I could put regular in it and it would be fine.

I have a 2013 in Central Florida it works great. I weight alot. 5'9" 380 and its not unbearable fit wise. I drive 25 miles to work and back. Work lets me charge so I save half the charge cost. My last check I drove 1350 miles and used 1 gallon of gas. Sometimes I forget to charge so I can go to and from work and use a tad bit of gas round trip.

Will probably cost you more than it's worth if you need to take it to a dealership. Battery pack doesn't care about mileage, but it's very critical on time. After 10 years of service, some of the battery pack cells get weak and the software is unable to balance battery pack voltage which turns on service lights. Just my opinion, I'd put it out to pasture unless you can do the work yourself. 😒

Aside from the routine wear items like tires, bearings, shocks, and oil changes, and aside from the Thanksgiving day wreck and the rock through the radiators (which aren't specifically a problem with the car's quality), what maintenance have you had to do with this car? I bought a 2013 Volt last year and I'm curious about the longevity of this model. My previous vehicle was a Dodge minivan that lasted a little over 300K miles but had a lot of maintenance issues, mainly due to rust (the engine was rock solid, but what finally took it off the road was the transmission going out). Since I like my Volt so much I'm hoping it'll last me a good 20 years or more.

Hey Eric, how is the suspension holding up after 300k miles? Do you drive on smooth roads in your commute? And is the car starting to feel and sound like it has 300k miles? I've owned 200k Mile cars and they sound and feel like 200k. Also can you tell me if you changed the engine air filter at 45k and if it looked bad. My 2013 has 40k but only 9k engine miles. My car has some clicks when pressing the go pedal but is pretty solid.

Awesome! Good to hear. So you replaced the suspension only because of the wreck right? Why new springs? What sound if any were they making. I have experienced a clicking sound on take off and had it "repaired" twice at two different chevy dealerships under warranty but it still clicks when the car goes off line. Very faint. But have another Cmax energi and a all electric focus and never experienced clicking. Ever heard little sounds like this? I now know the gurgling sound is the brakes and is normal. But I swear the click is not normal.

Wayne H, the primary reason is most recent driving style. When I bought my first Volt (used 2012), I was disappointed on day 1 that a full charge said 34 miles. After a week of me driving it, it charged to 39. The following week - 42. Similar story on my present Volt (used 2013), except it now typically charges to 45 - 49. Other factors are tire pressure, temperature, terrain.... The amount of energy in the battery pack is no different, it just forecasts range based on recent driving history.

That's not *too* bad on the price if you're only paying the labor cost. At Autozone, front bearings are $138 for Duralast and $200 for Moog; rear bearings are $137 for Moog brand only. And all of them are 1-3 year warranty, not lifetime like those GM ones you're talking about.

Nope. Battery pack got weaker at the 7th year of use. Mileage was around 422,000 when I noticed less passing power and the generator had to engage to pull long hills.

My insurance would cover it due to mileage. Says it was worn out. Btw, volts have 3 or 4 radiators sandwiched together. About $120 a piece. Didn't know that till after the repair. 35,000 miles later I took it in for an oil change and dealer says his tech had to add coolant due to the radiator leaking. Told him it was repaced not long ago. That's when he told me about the way the coolant system is set up. I refused the repair and carried coolant with me. That was 110,000 miles ago and i haven't added a drop of coolant. Dealers aren't always honest.

I think he said it's 110 miles one way, so a return trip would make it 220 miles a day. Which is a very long commute, but in other articles Erick said he preferred to stay where he lived and commute longer to his new job because he wanted to stay close to family. Which is great for the rest of us, because he's giving us a real world example of a high mileage Chevy Volt, which naysayers claim the battery will die after 100k miles, and cost $10,000 to replace. Except he's still on the original battery, and it's still holding up great after 350k miles.

6 wheel bearings in the front? Is that 3 sets or 6 sets? I have about 240K on my 1999 Civic coupe, original wheel bearings there. Gone on some bumpy rides with it too. So perhaps the wheel bearing design on this car isn't that tough? When you wanted to replace them, were they making a bit of noise or were they making serious noise? Cost? Is there a way to disable the honk when it begins to charge, and the honk alarm if charging if interrupted on your '12? It has turn by turn navigation in the instrument cluster? If you lived closer, I might of been interesting in buying your car when it reaches 450K. I think you said in the Facebook group that is when you are going to switch to another Volt. I live in Vancouver Wa.

NEVER. and it is an automatic transmission. Pulled a loaded 5x8' u-haul about 100 miles with it too about 6 months ago. It's very well engineered and I keep the tranny fluid clean. Well engineered like the Volt. Except for the wheel bearings I suppose. The 7th gen Civics (2001-2005) automatic transmissions were not built nearly as well as the 6th gen (1996-2000).

Have you thought about getting a new 2017 Chevy Bolt electric car with a 238 mile range? I'm happy for your success with the Volt, and the incredible mileage you have achieved, but the majority of your 110 mile commute is still done using dirty polluting oil, which keeps us addicted to using dirty fossil fuels. I drive a 2013 Nissan Leaf which only gets 85 miles to a charge, which works for me because I go to school only 8 miles away. Since you have such a long 110 mile commute, perhaps you should think about buying a Tesla Model 3 or a Chevy Bolt, which can both go over 237 miles on a charge.
