Good review. A difference that you didn't mention, a very important one, is reliability. The Toyota hybrids are reaching 300k miles, they are so reliable. In fact, when I bought my 2023 Rav4 hybrid, my dealer threw in a lifetime powertrain warranty. You won't find this level of reliability in a Honda.

lifetime powertrain warranty doesn't mean it's reliable. Dodge dealers used to offer those often. They have lots of restrictions, you have to get all your maintenance done at the dealer, they will rip you off on the maintenance which will more than make up any future repairs needed, if any...

It's great for people who know little, and enjoy deeper dives. most of the other reviews talk about a lot of fluff that we don't need. This is perfect. The CRV review, you hit the top 3 things that pissed me off in the first minute of the video. Excellent stuff.

I just bought a XSE Hybrid for my 21 year old son. I looked at cars for him for MONTHS. We checked out Kia, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru. I think the RAV4 is a much better choice than the competition for several reasons. Toyota has a ton of safety features on their cars even on their lowest trim models. Most of the CRVs we looked at did NOT have Blind Spot monitoring (the dealers said the chip shortage). That to me was a big no-no for a younger driver. The RAV also has a great back-up camera and that Lane Keep Assist will beep if you move out of your lane. You can't beat the MPG on the Hybrid -- he is averaging 42 city. The car is peppy and quiet and doesn't even feel like a 4 cylinder. There are also a bunch of USB ports all over the car-- Honda is lacking with those. His opinion was that the RAV 4 was sportier looking -- the CRV gives mom vibes. The CRV is a great car, but I think Toyota wins this.

My 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XLE is 2 days old. I went from a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Limited. I like that the RAV4 is bigger; I can fit 2 sets of golf clubs width wise in the back and not have to put the seats down. I like the storage cover. The gas mileage is WAY better. A few knocks. The front passenger seat is manual. No leather. I find the cabin storage lacking. The center console has one big storage bin instead of a large storage bin and then a smaller one on top like the Jeep. No coin holder (I know, nitpick). Not sure about the interface yet, might just have to get used to it after having the Jeep for 3 years.

@@pelicanhill3251i drive hybrid one, comparing it here (EU) to the nearest competitors like Ford Kuga (i think US Escape) Hybrid or CR-V it is definitely noisier but for me it's just enough. You can cruise at 140km/h and comfortably talk with passengers or listen to the radio. I have a theory that people (but mostly car journalists) say it's noisy because when you are driving economically engine is mostly turned off or is on like 1,5k rpm so it's quiet but everyone when testing a car needs to do one full power pull and then the engine really kicks in and people start to complain about either noise canceling or CVT gearbox. But when driving normally you can barely hear the engine, I have mostly 60-70% ev driving %.

Great review. I’m in the market for a compact SUV and one of these makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons. While I am what I would consider an enthusiast my wife is not. She wants something that she can just jump in and go. She isn’t going to be extra careful with her vehicle and that is why I wouldn’t consider one of the more luxurious options yet she deserves something nice so I think this fits the bill nicely. While this isn’t exciting to some, we are coming from an older commuter so I think we would love and be impressed with one of these. Lastly we also pull a personal watercraft and I think the capability with the RAV4 is just enough. My only issue is how popular these are and it kills me to have to pay over MSRP. Hopefully we will see that change soon

Personally I've had amazing luck with Nissan. I've driven my 2 nissans around 700,000km combined and have only spent about $400 in all that time for a wheel hub. I changed my own brake pads, do my own oil changes... never an issue. however i like Lexus which I've owned and loved. and Toyota the most!

I've been split between those as well 😆 I started considering the RAV4 Prime potentially, but it's such a big price jump for something I'll likely rarely use, or don't want to stress out finding where I'll charge it between places, even though it can just run as a normal hybrid, but then why not just stick with the hybrid and save 25%/10k on the price. Pushing the 40-50k price range starts to feel like you're starting to enter the some luxury-end vehicle price ranges. I want the RAV4 to feel like a luxury vehicle, but there's a few things I imagine keep it from that -- I've heard the road noise isn't great and the engine noise can be loud as well, and now hearing about the sub is a bit odd as well -- you pay for the high end speaker system but it sounds like they don't add any dampening 🤔

@@CTSSTC I'm in the same boat, currently driving a gas hog WRX STI. I spend $120 in gas a week so the monthly payment going up even a couple hundred bucks is worth it to me. Plus with the Prime there's a $7,500 tax credit when you buy new. I came from owning a Tesla and loved just being able to plug in, drive to work, and come back home for a $60 electric bill increase. Unfortunately with MN winters and distances across the state I cannot do that without adding a couple hours of time in-between. In my eyes the Prime is worth it if you're commuting to work and it's less then 40 miles a day. Plus the heads up display is well worth the money, $3,000 for distracted free driving right on the windshield. If you're going to buy new with the Rav4 get the Prime with the tax credit (Technically its $43,000 at that point). I say go for it if you're going to hold onto it. On average you'll see any Toyota with 200k-350k in miles and they hold their value better then most cars.

Picked up a 2023 hybrid XSE with full option in that exact same silver sky color minus running board a week ago and first thing I did notice was weird door handle positon, took a minute to figure out how to close the door. Smh. This is major issue for me and it is a design flaw. Still can't get used to it. I don't think average kids or seniors can close or control open in tight spot or windy weather without potentially ding other car. I watched ton of Rav4 reviews but you are the only reviewer mention this issue. My two other cons are crappy JBL premium sound and backup pedestrian alert sound, which I deleted it already. Simply couldn't stand it and didn't want to inform every neighbor whenever I'm leaving. Keep it if you can't safely back up a small SUV. Btw, CRV has more cargo space due to no spare tire, one of many reasons why I chose Rav4. For me, a spare tire is one of those things that I must have even if I don't use it.

Saw my 1st XSE hybrid just the other day it was white. On closer inspection noted all the polished black plastic trims around the wheel wells and lower body. Interesting look, but couldnt help but wonder how durable that will be against scratching and scuffing over time? Seems to me the typical textured matte plastic is tried and true, so it looks like a risky styling move to me?

All my life I wanted a Rav4 Hybrid. This year I finally bought a brand new 2023 and I love the hybrid mileage, the ground clearance and the 4 wheel drive. I was so in love that I totally ignored all the drastic design flaws. The roof is two inches too low. I am 5'10" with a tall torso and I bang my head every time I get in and out and what's even worse is the serious visibility flaws. When I look 30 degrees to the right the rear view mirror is directly in front of my face. If I want to look 30 degrees to the right I have to duck my head down to see underneath the rear view mirror. The center console is three inches too wide on both sides. It digs into my right knee making it painful to my knee cap to keep my foot on the accelerator pedal. I’m thinking about gluing on some padding to ease this problem. My wife also complains about leg discomfort on her side. The side pillars are so wide that I absolutely cannot see oncoming cars at intersections of less than ninety degrees. I feel like this is going to kill me one day. The headrest is so stupidly designed that I sometimes feel like it is forcing my head down. After four months of constantly banging my head, serious visibility problems, the most uncomfortable seating and the loudest road and wind noise of any car I have ever owned I am now sorry that I ever bought a RAV4 at all. Plus I heard of a new class action law suit because the moon roof drains are short circuiting the air bags which it claims Toyota knew about but failed to fix which the customer must now pay to fix and there is other talk about a power cable corrosion that may cost up to $6K to fix. After four months of living with this car I'm now sorry I ever bought a RAV4.

Getting mine end of April in the unicorn color Cavalry Blue with loaded Tech Package. Trading in my 4-month old ‘23 CRV Sport Touring for a lot of the same reasons you pointed out. Main reason (which you didn’t mention here iirc) is that RAV4 Hybrids have a spare tire while the CRV Hybrids provide you with a fix a flat can that would mean you have to replace that tire you just plugged asap. For the same price point of a tech packaged XSE and Sport Touring, you get so much more in a RAV4z. Yes, the “luxuries” in a CRV is better but at that point, get an Acura or a Lexus 🤷🏽‍♂️

Great review and appreciate the comparison to CRV. One thing not mentioned is that in Hybrid, the CRV is waaay more expensive. That seems counterintuitive... one main reason people get a hybrid is to save money on fuel costs, but then you have to spend 10 grand more for the CRV?!? Also enjoy the "odds and ends" ... one thing I would mention is the black trim around the wheels. Not sure why higher trims have them as painted metal - I much prefer the black plastic molding on most other trims and vehicles. I think that feature is more about utility (prevention of rust) then about looks.

How loud is it on the freeway at cruising speed (not passing), maybe around 70 mph? Is the CRV quieter? Also, I'm sad that Toyota couldn't give this refresh TSS 3.0. Do you know why? Is it missing some sensors by chance? What can TSS 3.0 do that TSS 2.5 (+?) can not do? Finally - can any part of the 2023 RAV4 be updated over the air? What about CRV?

The worst thing about the Car is the Carplay head unit. It’s great for phone sound, but the interface between using the traditional radio is a nightmare. It requires using the paddle wheel on the steering wheel and the center of the drivers display console. That’s the only way I have found to get to the radio. Even though it says radio on the CarPlay that is either IHeart, or Sirius XM. If you have it you could be using Tune In. There are only two apps for weather and one has a weather map but charges you for it. (Hello AccuWeather and Weather Channel). The door entry is smaller than a Subaru Forester and big people have to fold their neck to get in. I get 38-42 mpg in ECO mode. The daytime running lights are awesome. It’s almost like you have low, med, and high beams. The key should just be a push button. I own the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid LE.

I wish all these car manufacturers would dump the 60/40 split in the second row seats, and make them all 40/20/40 like with the Audi Q8 and Porches. That middle fold down is incredibly useful, and allows 4 full seats, 2 front, 2 second row, when you have to put the middle part of the second row down, while whenever you have to put part of the second row down in a 60/40 split, you get 3 and a fraction adult seats. Dump the 60/40 guys, and go the 40/20/40.
