3 Valve 4.6 Ford How to Replace Timing Chains
In this video I have a 2010 3 valve 4.6 liter Explorer and has had history of rattle on start up and also some intermittent variable valve timing codes. Previous visit had intermittent uneven compression. The customer opted for timing chain replacement so I will show you how to do this job. The manuals are not very good at explaining this job and require you to take some extra steps that I did not do so let me show you how to get this job done.

Great video, Tone! Just passing along a tip on that Steering Pump. The bottom bolt is below the back top bolt and has a plastic wire harness keeper snapped onto it. You can see it if you look from the hood hinge area. After you pull down and off that harness clip you can go in from the front, under the pulley with a 3/8 ratchet and a 13mm deep socket. It will be out in a minute. Took me a half hour to figure this out..

Excellent advice and video. I followed this and changed the chains, tensioners, guides and phasers in my 2010. A few more tips: The left cam doesn't want to move, the right does but I held each of them with an assistant and Vise-grips. I marked the cams so I could tell if they moved. I alternated with a holding tool to hold the phasers to remove and to torque down the retaining bolts. Otherwise straightforward. I used an OTC pulley remover for the dampener and had to file down the hooks to grab the spokes. I didn't remove radiator hoses or drop the coolant. Just changed oil and filter after an hour of running. A thirteen hour job for me, outdoors using all Motorcraft parts from Tasca Ford, $1000 (June, 2023) with new solenoids. Runs like a dream now. I hate the plastic junk but this valve phaser setup is amazing. Ready for another 135,000 miles. Thank you, Tone!

@@NutsandBoltswithTone if you get a chance I’d love your feedback on my engine and timing chains. Just got the cover off and expected to see a broken chain guide. Not broken but definitely loose on one side.

What tool did you make to hold the right cam? Missed that part. And that silicone looks like the Right Stuff lol.

Haha it may have been Right Stuff, or Motorcraft, not sure. I actually just rigged up something to bolt up and hold phaser in place, but here is a link to a very cheap tool to hold the cam sprocket. amzn.to/3N585Ao

I'm doing this job right now...do you mean too put a socket on the phaser bolt too hold it or what did you do too keep it in place so the phaser didn't move thanks

I am not exactly sure how I held it in place, if there is not a place on the cam to put a wrench on then hold the cam with the phaser bolt but be very careful of the outer portion of phaser that you do not damage it. I thought there was a place to put a wrench on it. We may have put channel locks on the cam but just be careful. Message me on Instagram if you have anymore questions and I can help you out. Thanks for watching.

Hi I went on Instagram too find you but I can't but anyway the cam doesn't have a 6 point for a wrench they have a special tool but thank you for the reply I actually can't use the cam phasers bolt because I have too take the head off but thanks for the reply love the video and I subscribed.

@philliprollman7421 well that makes sense about the cam Bolt. That confirms we used channel locks and held the cam. Nuts_n_bolts_with_tone That's my Instagram

I thought it was recommended to change the phasers because they are common point of failure? If that is true taking all this off and not replacing them seems like a waste of work

  • @NutsandBoltswithTone

It is recommended to do so, however sometimes like in this case the phasers are not being replaced and this is how you do it if you are not replacing them. Plus this is how to service the timing chain system without removing valve springs. Thank you for watching I appreciate it

02 Explorer 2V 125k miles. Screeching sounds [like a cat hissing] upon light acceleration and especially at higher rmp like at each gear change. Two days later a misfire code. Pulled cover and found a small guide piece broken off. Drivers side chain is loose [after days of sitting I realized this]. Moved to TDC and although no copper links on chain the sprockets seem to be in correct position, roughly. Question: is it possible to throw a misfire code due to a stretched chain and said chain did not skip a tooth? Also, it felt like the vehicle would rock forward and backwards while accelerating towards the end right before I shut her down. No loud noises, just a screech, misfire, broken guides and the rocking motion. Have not had diagnosed. Help appreciated

Thank you for watching the video and I'm sorry your having problems. Misfire codes, lack of power can all be from A mish timed engine. If you found a piece of a guide then that means the chain has stretched because of the guide. Base engine timing is very important so you need to get that fixed first. Please hit me up on Instagram if you have any further questions.
