3 Tricks for Passing Flexible Guards | No Gi

Passing very flexible guards is difficult, period. When the guard player can invert, monitor, replace and defend with lots of dynamic flexibility, you are likely to have a hard time securing the pass. This video shows some principles, techniques and tricks for dealing with this kind of flexible guard, no gi edition. Obviously, lots of other ways exist for dealing with this, but these are just a few I selected to illustrate so principles I think are important. I hope this helps.

This looks like a solid pass, can't wait to try it out. Seems like it would work against any guard not just flexible...guess I'll find out.

The last pass blew my mind and can be exploited in tournaments which rulesets only allow straight ankle locks

shouldnt you clear the knee line on last technique?

  • @KnightJiuJitsu

Good question / concern. If her secondary leg isn’t hooking behind my rear leg, the position isn’t secure even if the knee line isn’t technically clear. The roll is still possible. However, I should have clarified that in the video. Thanks for the comment, and I’ll be more specific in the future.

When you finally manage to pass the guard, but you give them an inch of space and they immediately reguard, and you're back to square one.

I think only the first past is realistic. The other two are to complicated and optimistic.

These are all realistic because they have worked live energy in competition. Some are more complicated than others, but that doesn’t detract from their realism.
