I just subscribed to your channel. I'm a volunteer Math tutor to 3 elementary kids. I did pretty well in high school and college algebra back in the 80s, so I'm a bit out of shape when it comes to remembering PEMDS and a multitude of other skills to solve problems. I'm founding your videos enormously helpful as I have to not just get reacquainted with my algebra skills, but also help me "teach" young students correctly how to start to learn these at an elementary level. I want to make sure I'm teaching "good math skills." Thank you for being a very good Math teacher via KZread. It's very helpful to me.

Ok just since yesterday followed this channel, and this one was a level down on complexity to the two previous.. or you could say one power down 🙃 (had the answer in an instant in my head before the choices, where the previus required me some brain gymnasics). Already love this channel. Healthy to recatch +30 year old highschool stuff. And reminds me of an old beloved lecturer from my engineering study years. He was in his early 70ies in mid 1990s (sadfully my uni had rules stating employment could not continue when the person turned 72 so I got to enjoy the last of him during my master thesis semester) and every even complex calculus he did by his head, where I just enjoyed programming equations (e.g. for CFD base modelling of complex flows). Now in my early 50ies and I have already realized that it is never too late. It should be a requirement for all engineering students, high school students and ground school and not just stuff for mathematicians - to practice the simple math rules. If nothing else just to keep your brain healthy and fresh. Thanks for a stimulating channel ❤ Greets from Denmark

You missed the explanation of why anything to the power zero is 1. x to the n divided by x to the n equals 1 (dividing something by itself always gives you 1) but x to the n divided by x to the n also equals x to the (n-n) which gives you x to the power zero (like x to the fifth over x squared gives you x cubed - you subtract the power of the denominator from the power of the numerator)

I hear the same logic about Trigonometry. Some careers actually use it extensively. Some technology is based on it - like GPS, aircraft inertial navigation systems, architecture, etc. At school level (the level of this KZread content) we expose students to little of everything - algebra, geometry, trigonometry, geography, language, poetry, economics, accounting, law, engineering, history, creative arts, natural sciences, computer science, etc. Most of which you might not use again, depending on the choice of career. That is education for you. It's up to teachers to explain the real world application - unfortunately this is often neglected. For example, this "stuff" is used to calculate your personal risk profile depending on your age and gender - of major importance to the insurance and financial sectors. It is used to calculate the performance profile for aircraft, taking into account engine power, lift coefficient, density altitude, runway length and elevation - all in a serious attempt to establish and predict a safe scenario while taking off in an aircraft. Not everybody has a "use" for it, buy we are all exposed to it everyday and therefor we all use it all day long - often unknowingly so. In our cars, computers, cellular phones, planning our retirement, calculating loan repayments, designing roads and bridges, etc.

In math the word convention means an agreed upon way of doing things. Any number to the power of 0 is 1 because the powers that be of math have made it so. The power of 1 of any number is that number because that's the convention, the rule. So many things in math and science work because an agreement or convention was established. The why of it doesn't matter so much as understanding what it means and does.

@topkatz58 Thanks. Yes, I have seen this years ago. That was poorly said on my part. Maybe the imaginary number convention is a better example. It is argued whether mathematics is a human invention or a part of reality of the universe. Since there are numerous mathematical constants and so much can be explained and represented mathematically I believe it's an innate property of the universe independent of humanity. People just come up with some clever tricks to make it work better for themselves. Imaginary numbers are real and practical by the way.

Something of a contradiction but then so is the real number 2 in terms of being a prime number, even though it meets the prime number criteria and is certainly not a composite number.

If you want to explain something explain how anything with a power of zero magically changes and becomes one. It just doesn't make sense and is illogical. Just because you hit a button on the calculator that tells you that it's one doesn't mean that it should be right. It's like people telling you that zero times zero is not zero. It's always going to be zero in the real world. If anything is at fault it's the faulty way in which I'm math problem is written.
