I was recently in Los Angeles about to buy a Discovery 5, I love the car, but have watched a lot of videos saying its reliability is poor, if it wasn't for the engine and transmission, the minor issues I could live with.

I've always thought that 20" rims were better, the ride quality, cost of tyres, but also the weight difference, ally rims are heavier than rubber so therefore represent more unsprung weight and greater mass for the engine and brakes to cope with, I've also heard people with large rims getting through brake discs after only 30k from new, the last factor is I go off-road on a regular basis with my hunting dogs and I use BFG's which give a lovely ride and cushion against rocks, I hate to think what's going to happen with the new Landy that sports 23's, it'll just be an expensive trinket!!

Factory wheel size is best unless you want to change differential ratios as well. It's not just a case of slapping 22's on and going they look cool. There's also turning clearance in the wheel arch causing damage if not on level ground.

Fully agree on point #3, wheel size. My 2020 D5 HSE came with dealer specced 22 inch alloys, a £2,200 option. The ride does suffer and only last week it cost me £352 to replace one Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season (285/40 R22 110Y) due to pot hole damage. That would be £1,400 to replace all four corners. Definitely stick with the standard 21 inch wheels.

My warranty on my (3 litre) SDV6 HSE D5 runs out in June and this video has just about convinced me to take out the extended warranty. We haven't had a great deal go wrong with the vehicle since getting it new, but that in itself could be a sign that big bills are ahead! I've had an email from the dealer wondering if I wanted to take it in for a "pre warranty expiry" health check and you know what? I might just do that! Cheers Doc, great videos always. Keep them up!

Own a 2008 Discovery 3 SE V8, with that said I would never get the diesel engine and thank goodness it was never offered in the states the six cylinder engine in my opinion is under powered for the Discovery weight class and believe it or not I get pretty good gas mileage out of my 4.4 V8 when driving in sport mode on the highway. There are two main reasons that not many of these cars are seen driving around - their poor reliability and the unattractive, asymmetric tailgate design. It’s also pretty obvious that a 2.0 L engine in a car of that weight is not a good idea.

That is my biggest fear if I get into a car like this one, although I love Land Rover. It makes me worry about the near future too much.
Ride is better, off-road is better with smaller rims and cheaper. Looks better with more tire and small rims.
Do you prefer this over 2015 Audi Q3, MB GLA 250?

That’s the exact situation I’m in with the same question and year of cars !
200£ over 50k miles is not a big deal in my mind. 22” are very big wheels for a 2.0 liters tho

This doesn’t encourage me to purchase a Discovery, all I seem to come across is how problematic this vehicle seems to be

X7 - the 3rd row is less comfy for legs due to bigger space for luggage. Q7 - you don't want to try this car off-road. New GLS - too expensive.
I am giving my Land Rover Defender 90 away for just £5 a ticket! The winner will be announced on Sunday 17th December at 8pm. Good luck! GET A TICKET HERE: raffall.com/345715/enter-raffle-to-win-my-land-rover-defender-90-hosted-by-the-doctors-garage
come on bro if you want to save money go for Toyota but for range rover I am prepared to give him that extra 200k for nice look and I am prepared to let him him drink as much as he wants as long as he carries me around in comfort))
Can anyone tell me if the DVD player in a 2018 LR Disco can play dvds with the sound coming over the stereo rather than just through headphones?

It can- you can choose to run the audio through the stereo or headphones (or individual headphone) so really good
2 years recommended servicing and needing a new engine seem to go hand in hand. 2 years is and has always been too long, unless you're doing less than 5000 miles per year.
JLR cars seem to be very high risk to buy used out of warranty, which always put me off. They have an awful engine reliability record and get away with it. They should just buy in Japanese German engines.
Lists endless problems with car... "Are you sponsored by Landrover?"
Please change the title to 3 things I wish I'd known.... " 3 things I wish I knew refers to something you would like to know now, not in the past. Thanks

Uuuhhhggg! How the hell does it need a new engine within -3yrs. I really want one and have my eye on one but holy crap, seriously??? All these problems??
There are two main reasons that not many of these cars are seen driving around - their poor reliability and the unattractive, asymmetric tailgate design. It’s also pretty obvious that a 2.0 L engine in a car of that weight is not a good idea.

To be fair I see a lot of discovery 5’s daily plus the offset numberplate is part of the design carried through from the previous 4 models - if it’s central they look like a discovery sport

@@thedoctorsgarage I’ve had three Discos from new over the last 20 years and now have a Range Rover, so I’m not anti-LR. My last Discovery 4 Landmark was a lovely car. The tailgate looked fine because the number plate on its left hand side was square. It’s the rectangular plate that completely ruins the current model - IMHO!
Is it not fairly obvious that a 2L engine is a bad idea in such a large car anyway? You're barely benefiting in econony anyway, the 3L would only get a couple of MPG less.
So basically they are just unreliable?Just buy a Sorento-7 year 100.000 mile warranty. It is a no brainer.

Sure, but Sotento is not an off roader (anymore, the first gen was great though).
2 year service interval is such a scam, honestly, no car, no engine, no matter how good the oil is, can do that, not for a sustained time, it will cost you eventually
It was too stupid to put glass and mirror controls on top of the door. Even poor rain may result in malfunction.
One word summarizes land Rover products TRASH why you buy an unreliable product when you can get an eternal vehicl e for less(lexus lx and land cruisers)
It’s a shame they can make a beautiful car, but it is a proper piece of crap. The list of things you’ve had to repair or replace already is insane.
2 years service interval. Rediculous.
"I wish I would of"? ... really?
The Disco 5 is ugly compared to the Disco 3/4
It's. Simple stay away from land rover worst brand on the market
Why don’t you stop winging on about it and sell it! Buy German. Everyone knows they are crap!!!
