I grew up shooting film in the 90s before digital cameras were even a viable option. And while there's something very special about the process and results of film, there are a few things that really drive me crazy. In this video, I'm gonna share 3 things that I hate about film photography.
This is still coming from a preference for black and white film that I develop and print in my own darkroom. Though much of this can be applied to all genres of film photography.
Let me know below... what are your biggest frustrations when it comes to shooting film.

Explaining film photography to the average person, and trying to make them understand why you persevere in this field results in them looking at you like you're sadistic, modern technology has dissoluted any essence in them, the world now filled with automatons craving convenience. You've not set up a back street minilab but a creative cocoon, like a painter mixing a pallette with paints, printers do so with intensity of light in response to a photosensitive material, concept is the same, it's visual art! All the convenience digital brings, it also renders you passive in many ways, staring at screens for me is dehumanising. Cost wise, film photography may seem daunting at the moment but, when you've collected a nice array of optical gear, these tools you cherish and the intuitive connection you feel is the beauty of real photography, digital and eventually AI( degeneracy!) are like fashion, yearning for the next 'wonder' and cultural acceptance. The problems you identify are just minor distractions you get over, the joy of a finished silver print, your personal style input throughout the process regarding aesthetic choices, lenses, film and developer characteristics, papers etc, is art and artist in harmony.

Totally agree regarding preserving information. There are darkroom techniques that took me hundreds of hours of trial and error to figure out, only to later find it as a two page spread in an op shop darkroom handbook from the 80s. No regrets though, the voyage of (re)discovery is highly enjoyable.

Guess that’s why I like used book stores too.

Great subject! When I read the title of your video my first reaction was; nothing. There’s nothing I hate about film. With dust, either I have good cleaning technique or I’ve been lucky, maybe both. I print with diffusion enlargers which helps of course. Initially I disliked spotting my prints, but with practice came success and now I actually enjoy it when required, believe it or not. Yeah, the price thing; of course it would be great if it wasn’t so expensive, but I don’t shoot in such quantity that it’s a problem. I shoot 95% b&w anyway, so the recent price rises haven’t been as bad as for color. I used to shoot quite a bit of Velvia and still have 11 boxes of 4x5 and a bunch of 120 in the freezer. I nearly choked when I saw the prices being asked for the 4x5 recently! I need to up my house contents insurance😂. Your channel has been very useful for me, especially your darkroom techniques, I’m very grateful. I’ve been darkroom printing on and off for 40 years and still learning. I can imagine it’s not so easy to get started now, but thanks to you and a few others it’s still possible.

It does seem like color has it the worst for price... Price has not been a huge factor for me either (mostly black and white) as far as shooting goes but I do hate when prices go up... This became apparent to me when I recently looked at Ilford WTFB paper... I had bought a pack for 170 a few months back and it just jumped to 230 or something... That seems a bit crazy. But it is what it is... Thanks Mike!

Can't comment on dust quite yet because I've just finished setting up my "temporary" darkroom area in what will be our walk-in shower later in the year. Well that's the plan as it's been over a year since I started the remodel with material pricing as high as they are which leads me into your Hate #2. Film and now paper pricing is a big one for me since this is purely a hobby. People talk about all the day to day needs and inflation and do they drop a med in order to pay the electric bill. While not anywhere near that situation, I still would rather spend my hobby money on things for the kids. So it has cut into my shooting and I'm sure with my inexperience, my printing too as I'm certain to go thru quite a bit of paper. Your Hate #3 is a non-issue for me. I've got boxes and boxes of car magazines when I subscribed to them for about 10 years well over 40 years ago. I don't know what I've missed photo magazine wise. I do have the extreme benefit of having real-time, visual tutorials, such as all of yours, coupled with the always helpful Comments Section. After watching videos, I'll read thru a lot of the comments and learn even more. I've found that the photography channels, again, such as yours, the content creators are very active. Between comments and your replies, it's like a live Wiki of information. I am very grateful for these handful of excellent channels. And sounding like a broken record here but you and your subscribers are the best. Thanks for your time and energy in presenting this material that can be viewed repeatedly and forever.

Congrats on getting a darkroom set up! One thing I do to save money is print test prints on RC. I like the Arista EDU Pearl from Freestyle Photo. It is said to be rebranded Foma paper and is quite nice. (I used to shoot the film all the time as well and always liked it! You can get it at a good price. Adorama has a cheap rebranded paper to. (I have settled on the Arista) I buy boxes of 8x10 and trim to 5x7. This leaves me with a small strip for local test strips If I need to make them. I print small and then scale up once I like the prints. This way I also have 8x10 already for contacts and slightly bigger prints as well. You could also save a bit by buying chemicals and mixing your own D72 (Dektol) However this takes more time… Always a trade off. Thanks Mikey!

You took it back to photo mags. That made me sad. I truly miss those. Sadly, none of mine survived the decades and my move to Japan. Totally nailed it with dust. I’m vacuuming, air blowing and static-free brushing my film holders like a maniac too. All to no avail. Maybe I need to give the shower cap/shirtless method a go. Things I hate these days about film photography, number one is the cost. It was so much cheaper even 4 years ago. Film, lenses, bodies. Number 2, guys in FB groups who post a digital photo and a film image and smugly ask you to pick which is which. I used to say stuff like all we’re comparing is your Fujifilm camera’s lut or Sony camera’s lut to your lightroom skills. Nowadays I just shut up and keep scrolling. Those guys and the ones who troll or are snooty to newcomers and try to make them look dumb for asking some of their questions. So I guess my issue is online communities. You’re the best and I truly appreciate every video you do. Have a good one.

One thing that has worked for me and my 4x5 holders is to always (whenever possible while loading) have the holders on their side (standing on the narrow edge - dark slides only partially open) then as a take a sheet of film I immediately turn it sideways as well.) less surface area for any dust to fall on. Also I try to lean back when loading. This seems to have helped eliminate dust problems for me. ( plus wipe down the area I load film now and then) Yeah pretty pointless to compare that. Two different things. I have found a few great forums but agree that Trolls just ruin the internet. Appreciate it!

On my fiber darkroom prints I have very seldom dust problems because for every print I check the negative for dust on a lightbox before printing . Ilford sell antistatic cloth for making the negative and glasses free of any dust . If you want instant succes with film photography forget it , you have to work exact and accept that sometime things go wrong . But the reward on fiber paper is something special with feel I made this myself .

I agree with you, the most hated thing for me also is dust! Even with my cold light enlarger I have trouble with it. I'm not so upset about film prices to be honest with inflation skyrocketing the price of everything I'm just rolling with it. You can still find good deals if you look hard enough. With that said, Kodak, you're killing with with price of 100' bulk for Tri-X. The one film I miss is Plus-X, I just liked the look of that film maybe they'll bring it back in future. I see the future of analog photography growing albeit slowing over the next few years and it's up to people like you, I and everyone who's still doing analog to help the next generation along with it.

With medium or large format, you can get wonderful detail and the lenses add interesting character. With 35mm you can choose fun film like infrared or Lomo purple. You can get a really grainy fast black and white film for a 'filmic' look that would be hard to reproduce using digital. You can use a wacky camera like a holga or a pinhole camera to get a really unique mood for your images. Downside with film is that large format is expensive. With medium format or 35mm, I don't think the cost is important, compared to all the other amortized and fixed costs with digital (for instance, cost for a shoot may be dominated by going to a location, hiring models, etc.)

Dust for sure, price increases especially for color film. Black and white has not been quite so bad, since there are some budget options like Kentmere and Fomapan, which besides being reasonable, are probably also reigning in Kodak and even Ilford from bumping up their higher end films excessively. Lack of parts and repair options are a definite problem for most cameras, once the electronics goes that's pretty much it. Luckily there are a couple of good repairmen in Canada. But pretty funny to hear you refer to yourself as 'old'. I remember when my parents got our first color television back in the 60s. I wish I knew what happened to my dad's old camera gear, it disappeared before he passed away and I never asked him about it. Cheers from Montreal!

That’s the odd thing. Before digital we always (or a lot of us) were always after the perfect most fine grain image with perfect color…etc. Now most of the time I just enjoy the in-perfect nature of a lot of the film processes and see that as a strength over how “perfect” (or just terrible in my opinion) one can make an image using a $1000 camera and Lightroom. I go back to 1968 with my first SLR. Darkroom Magazine, which eventually became PhotoTechniques, if I'm not mixing things up, was the best of its class. I am excited about the rebound of film photography; I continue looking for community avenues locally. I gave a presentation on B&W film photography at the library here last Sunday -- three people showed, though a number of the high schools still teach it. Never give up. I just nearly spent a day and a half in the darkroom printing from three negatives, prints now drying. I love it, because it is physical, because its limitations are challenging, because it requires mastery of craft as well as artistry to achieve outstanding results in a beautiful sliver-gelatin print -- all part of an ongoing process bereft of fear of software going out of date. My cameras and lenses are mostly about 50 years old and, with proper maintenance, doing just fine. Costs are a function of our bankrupt physical economy, eaten away by decades of increasing domination of speculative finance. Providing the nuclear confrontation being driven by relevant banking quarters is avoided, there's lots of good news on the new economy front -- not yet in the U.S. and not in the U.S. media. Hang in there, as they say; the universe, which is both physical and good, will always win.

Always felt like Photo Techniques was in it’s own league. Even the late one I have had articles by photographers like Howard Bond and the like. Love the darkroom and film for the same reasons. My only fear is losing more materials but we have been on a decent projectors for that recently and hope the interest stays to support the companies making the materials. (Wish Kodak never quit making paper that’s for sure) One thing is guaranteed and that the future sure will be interesting. Cheers!

@@DistinctionPhotoLLC PT was the one magazine to which I continued to subscribe when I couldn't afford others. Boy, did I learn a lot from that. Tim Layton tried to start up a PDF magazine a few years back, but it ran out of steam; tough enterprise. I am also a book and magazine fan, rather than screen, and keep a stream of books I can afford coming through inter-library loan. With an economy that supports industrial innovation and improved livings standards again, possibilities for film photography will expand, if the market is there. I think it will be, as part of a deep cultural change that rejects the existentialist irrationalism that has dominated increasingly since the '70s for the kind of optimism that underlay the best achievements of the previous decades. You will find the book "The Revenge of Analogue: Real Things and Why They Matter" (2016) a good and revealing read. Put it on your short list.

@@DistinctionPhotoLLC Not every particular that he covers is of particular interest, but his research reveals a certain quality of shift that is not simply novelty or fad. He comments very little until the final parts of the book, where he indicates his own thinking a bit more freely. It was written about 8 years ago; a lot has happened since then, globally and domestically, and the rate of the rate of change continues to accelerate. What he indicates about film photography is echoed thousands of times in articles, interviews, blogs, videos, etc. that have been made since, continuing today. There are important reasons behind the film rebound.

Sure, you clean up dusts.. but might then shoot in digital, if you have want sterile scans. Those imperfections makes film photography truly unique compared to digitally taken pics. Film photography nowadays is very niche and don't think the price will comedown ever, because of the raw materials that is harder to get to produce films. Also film is not environment friendly (film development chemicals, plastic wraps and paper on each film). I wish the film could more price friendly and widely available, but as you have seen, film mostly is out of stock and that makes also price increase for existing stock. Also the market for film photography is small, that's why the film stocks is being discontinued (like some of Fuji films and other brands).

@@cameraprepper7938 with all do respect. I do know and they are both bad for the planet. However, most darkroom chemicals are harmless salts and ones that are not can be responsibly disposed of. I shoot both and can tell you over a 25 year period(when I fist got a digital slr) I have gone through and disposed of many , many cameras, plastic inkjet cartridges printers computers, etc… this stuff is all terrible for the planet. So please do not try and guilt trip me. You are equally doing damage to the planet my friend.

Of these 3 this dust is the most annoying. I don't want to say the prices are ok, but I specifically don't click like crazy, thinking twice and 2-3 rolls of BW 120 or 135 per month, developed at home, can't kill me. Film photography is a very beautiful hobby and as every hobby, it should be invested with our free time and with some amount of money. I don't worry about people who are spending 3-4 rolls every weekly walk. Finally, in the end, they usually don't have anything to show as well. But the DUST. I hate it when it is coming in amounts. Trying to clean and blow all the surfaces, but can't kill these particles completely. Just interesting to know how photographers fought dust in 50-80 when LR wasn't a solution? Well, going to write my next blog post about film photography and the roll of Agent Shadow, which I finished recently and developed and scanned last night - it was another fight with the dust and dust definitely won the battle :-))))

I agree with your observations . 200 years from now there will not be to much left of film photography . Nothing AI in my camera or prints ! I love the fact that an image taken on film in an analog camera is a representation of proven reality . You cannot say the same for anything Digitally generated . Just my opinions based on a life time of hands on image making and study .

Yes , i think new comers interested in photography , are taken by the craftsmanship and knowledge involved in any analog photo methods . Wet plate images are hyper real in their presence . Any film , camera , development , printing methods of today , are the best photography Has had from the beginning . Still you need to waste a few rolls and sheets of paper just to start !

To cut costs - stop buying the ovepriced shit like Kodak and Ilford. Buy Foma or Kentmere. Prices of film cameras - don't be a collector, find the camera which is the best suitable for you and sell the rest you have. I have Pentacon Six (because I can't afford Hasselblad) and Flexaret (because I can't afford Rolleiflex). I know the 6×6 format is the one I'm satisfied with, so I sold the 35 mm cameras and other stuff I had.

Problem is I love the results with Kodak and Ilford Film. Worth the price for me personally. Plus they are still making film so am willing to support them for their efforts. Still do not have to like the prices... but like I said this is not even film specific everything is being inflated. I have not tried the New Kentmere film and imagine it is as consistent as Ilford as it is made by them. shot some 20 years ago and do not remember what It was like. I have stopped myself from purchasing more camera for the exact reasons you describe. However, I will buy more in the future as I love cameras. For collecting or shooting I think they are awesome and will inevitably buy more no matter what the cost. If I like it ... I will probabaly buy it. Thats just me though.
