Great video and pictures BUT unfortunately you did not take a control with no filters which would have been the best comparison of all. I like the Yellow the best. Thanks and regards.

I know.... I realized I messed that up once I was developing the film.. My bad. I believe it was simply because I would not have shot that image without at least a yellow filter on. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Still thought it was valuable to see the differences in the filters though...

Basically you go in the order from yellow -> deep yellow -> orange -> deep orange -> red -> dark red More toward the red is going to give you more contrast and block more blue light and drop a blue sky darker toward black. More toward the yellow is going to be more subtle. I would defiantly try these three. Colors and see what suits your taste.

It's nice to hear that the people standing around in the picture are getting on your nerves too :-) Very interesting the different effects! B+W = original "Biermann und Weber" / Berlin, now belongs to "Schneider Kreuznach" which manufacture good and expensive lenses in Germany.

People just mostly do not care anymore. I think if they knew you were shooting film they might be a bit more considerate at times but everyone assumes its digital so does not matter. Others clearly do not even know you are shooting (like this guy) but annoying all the same.

@@LeDibeauPeople can be incredibly oblivious. I’ve done a lot of auto show work and I’ll have my camera on a tripod and someone will just walk up and sit in a car for five minutes. And that’s on a press day.

Hi i thought that this situation only happened to me. Just about every time I try to make a shot, a person, aeroplane or something distracting gets in the way. (What ever) 😎 Good low contrast choice of film, evan though those filters will up the contrast. On bright days like you were shooting on I use a Red or orange filters and polarizing filter combination, that seems to sharpen the picture as well. Thanks for your views and advise. 📸

Just a comment on filters with the Hasselblad bay 60 lenses… if you get a 67mm filter and the b60 to 67 adapter, you can put the filters on and get the pol filter adjusted, etc. and then slip the lens hood on. The outside b60 ring on the hood will slip around the filter ring just fine. You can’t do that with the 72mm or 77mm filters. 67mm are highly recommended for the Hasselblad for this reason.

Thanks for the filter comparison video. I performed a similar comparison test using yellow, orange, and red Tiffen filters on my 35mm f/1.4 lens on my Leica M6 35mm film rangefinder camera. I did, however, include a no-filter, a one-stop polarizing filter, and a two-stop polarizing filter shot.

@@DistinctionPhotoLLC Based on what I remember, I was able to determine that my yellow filter required +1 f/stop, the orange required +2 f/stops, and the red required +3 f/stops of light. The orange filter is the one I use most often. The effect of the yellow filter is too weak for my taste and the red filter is too strong. Since the filter size on my 35mm lens was 49mm and my filters were 52mm, I was also able to verify that my 49mm to 52mm step-up ring worked. I was also able to see how, when shooting black & white film, my polarizing filter performs like a 2-stop variable neutral density filter.

Great video. The only thing I would add is that the color filter lightens that color in B&W so in the case of your green filter it lightens green. If you really want to see dark skies with clouds that pop you should try a red filter and a polarizer.

Polarizers do make a huge difference... Just bought a pricey Lee one for my large format. It just seems to sit in the camera bag taking up room 🤔

I've used them quite a bit. I mostly only use yellow. Red takes careful pre-visualization to know when to apply it.

Yeah, I am the same, prob yellow the most. Red has wrecked a few shots for me, but when it’s right… it’s right! I find I do like it this shot because of the stark white building it has really strong contrast. For this one They all work I. My opinion. Just a matter of preference. Thanks!

Not overexpose but you do give more exposure depending on the filter. Filters all have a filter factor that tells you how much light they block.

I would never give up my Mamiya for any camera. I like the mirror flop sound. I did however replace the heavy lenses with view camera lenses to save weight. I had to adapt bayonet body caps to hold the view lenses. I also discovered Sinar color 4 square filters available in different color strengths, eg 05- 10- 15 etc. They're available in both primary and transparentsy colors and are stackable to adjust strength. I never used the RZ.The RB is totally mechanical and tough as hell. I have owned several. My friends who own Hasiblaids won't take them outside. My RB's have more time in Florida mud than a combat Marine!! I use and recommend Fugi W series view lenses. I take the bayonet front cap and reinforce it with a thin metal plate. I had to install a small metal screw to keep the cap from coming off. The Fugi's are available in several focal lengths from 80 to 300 mm. I use a tower finder. My kit with complete camera, 3 backs, 3 lenses, filters weighs less than camera and lens. I spent less than $ 900 for the whole kit including a huge sturdy tripod with a Bogen 3047 head!! You might also consider using Mamiya twin lens or press 23 lenses as they mount the same way. As a bonus both Graflix and Mamiya backs fit. Shoot your brains out!! David

Uses to have a universal press as well that had a beauty 2.8 on it as well. I do take my Hasselblad every where but at the same time miss 6x7 at times…

@@DistinctionPhotoLLC Before you buy an RB consider a Garvin 2x3 view. Mine cost $120 Used and needs service. Both the lens and film boards are removable and can be loaded with your choice of items. I made several boards for lenses and backs. The boards are the same front and back. Mine has full movements and will accept lenses to 300 mm. It has much more adjustability Than my RB and is liter. I added a RB revolving back to shoot landscapes and portraits. I miss the mirror slap and I hope I'll survive. God Bless - Film Forever!!

@@davidpresnell1734 oh man…. Have not heard that name in a while! I had a Gavin 2x3 view at one time. It had 2x3 sheet film holders and I could only find Foma film to fit them. A family friend had given me the camera and it worked but was in rough shape. Another camera I unfortunately sold. That one hurts too. Well another to put on the “reaquire list” 👍

Indeed.

Also keep in mind that with color filters it lightens its color and darkens the opsite. That is why the Red when so dark in the grass.

What filter do you use shooting portraits w/ b&w film? Any examples of shots you've taken? Thanks as always for sharing your process. Great work - both the process and the documenting of it! Double hard work. whew!

@@DistinctionPhotoLLC OK, well, that's some great looking work. It's both inspiring and deflating. ;) I'm pretty far from that with FP4+... I've got HP5 in my cameras now so I'll check out what I'm getting in the next batch of processing. Those shots are the look I like/want but I'm struggling to get the contrast and still hold onto the mid tones. (range?) Your method is much more disciplined, controlled, and practiced than mine (at this point)... so practice will help. I've got plenty of film and chemistry now, just need time and subjects to shoot.. surprisingly difficult to find both... but I'm trying. Thanks for your help and inspiration!

@@mcmillanvideos For portraits, The first thing is to make sure the lighting is good. The film you use will always be secondary to that in my opinion. Next I would use an incident light meter making sure to expose for the skintones The image I sent on my Insta I shot using HP5 rated at 800 on my meter (Note this is closer to 400 on my reflective meter - just depends on what and how you are doing it) this dumped the shadows a tad and I gave it more development. This scene was not contrasty but average and the light was falling fast. So adding more contrast to HP5 is not a big deal as it can take a bit on an average scene in my experience. FP4 is a bit more punchy out of the gate But make sure you find some great light first as that will make the skin look good!

Very usefull video. One have to be carefull when choosing an orange filter, as it exists different types of orange filters, rather yellow'ish orange that works like a stronger yellow filter, or rather red'ish orange that works like a lighter red filter.

Well, there is no color data stored in a black and white film so that is not going to help in Lightroom. What you are dealing with while shooting is the black and white films sensitivity to different colors of light.

I have been shooting Elk the last couple weeks here at home in the HOH Rainforest. I have been posting them on my IG with a couple videos as well. Using my digital cameras but tomorrow I'm going out with a couple 35mm cameras loaded with TRI-X 400. I was just wondering what would a yellow filter do with the Yellow hair on the Elk and the deep green moss and ferns. Maybe if I get brave I might try one or two shots. Well that is if I can find them again they move a lot.

So cool! My thought would be it would give a little more contrast and darken the greens a tad. I would also suspect the elk hair might get a slight. Very slight bump. One of the main reasons I bought a green was to try and lighten foliage. And while it does do this to some extent I find good light makes a much bigger difference in practice. You will lose light so the filter might not be the best option depending Only one way to find out. Have fun 👍

@@DistinctionPhotoLLC It rained so I am wet walking through the underbrush and crossing the river. I don’t mind that used to it but it hurts the shooting. I found two Bulls bugling back and forth but could never catch up to them. I could just hear them through the trees and over the river. So I will go back all this week and thankfully it looks like we should get some cloudy but dry weather coming for a couple days. Rain is a real issue because it is already so dark under the old growth trees when it rains it is very difficult to get a fast enough shutter.

@@DistinctionPhotoLLC I will unfortunately I was caught by surprise this morning. A Bull elk crossed the river but was a little to far away for the 80-200 I had on the film camera. But I am going back :)

I went to take a photo with my phone of some great architecture and cloud formations. Trouble was, there was some guy in reversed baseball cap sitting on the grass. To get the picture I’d have to wait patiently until he’d gone. So, I thought I’d have a cigarette while I waited. He didn’t budge! My conspiracy theory is that he’d guessed what I wanted to do, and decided to sit me out. After three cigarettes I gave up. There you go, it’s a free country. Maybe I’ll come back another year when I’m visiting then, and hope the sun’s still shining.

What do colour filters do to B&W ILFORD HP 5 film? Yellow filter makes the clouds visible Orange filter changes the forms of the clouds Red filter makes the clouds smaller Green filter does the clouds disappear Where is the photo without filter so we can see the start of the changing?

I spent about a week in Big Bend National Park. I took an 8x10, didn't use it, a 4x5, didn't use it, a 503CW that I bought when everyone was jumping into digital and almost giving away their film gear, I put a roll of PanF 50 Plus and Velvia 50 through that, my EOS 1V, didn't quite put a roll of PanF 50 Plus through that, a DSLR converted to IR, and a 1Dx. By far the most fun I had was getting to know the Hasselblad. My most common comment to myself? Pull the dark slide dumba**

My Hasselblad is hands down the most enjoyable camera I have used. A real pleasure.... I have missed some key moments due to that dark slide issue though :)

HP5 is not very sensitive to filter change. Try FP4 and will have a more dramatic differencies.

I found the video interesting, but wish you had edited out the waitihg for the guy smoking and instead explained reciprocity more. We've all been there with the perfect composition and then someoen plops in front of us, but we didn't need to watch it in real time.

I do use a polarizer as well but on this lens. 50 mm on 6x6 I get uneven results at times so typically avoid it but on longer focal lengths they work great 👍

Been cleaning my filters with a clean cotton shirt for decades… in fact these exact filters. They are still in perfect shape. Not sure why I wouldn’t as it works really well for me.
