3 sneaky looper pedal tips to IMPROVE YOUR LOOPING SHOWS

New! - My Daily Guitar Warm Ups - bit.ly/guitarwarmups
Looper pedal tips or loop pedal tips are here! The loop pedal i'm using is this (and it's amazing): amzn.to/2kZMUDV
Join me on PATREON here: / davidshanhun
Today's Thursday Tech Tips video is '3 sneaky looper pedal tips to improve your looping shows' and I SERIOUSLY hope you spend a bit of time on these. They will massively help your live shows - and hopefully inspire some more creativity about how you can build your loops (either at home or for shows and gigs).
Oh and the Boss Octave pedal is a must also if you're a solo one man band: amzn.to/2xZDvFA
I know I know... for those of you that follow me this is being uploaded on a Monday... I had some issues with editing software hence the delay.
Anyway, let me know which loop pedal you're using and whether these tips are something you do anyway, or if you learnt something new on how to use a loop pedal.
I'll be back this Thursday with another vid!
--also thanks - forgot to write that the iphone app I use for my loops is iMaschine 2.

I can see the hard work and focus required to reach your level of ability and your natural talent is evident. I can surely appreciate what it takes to be a loop artist. I've been a gigging musician for 44 years. But, although I've long wanted to, I've never performed a whole solo acoustic show. That's about to change. I have a three hour show prepared and would like to implement some very basic looping on some songs. I can't say my plans will never change, but at this point, I'm not looking toward ever being a loop performer, just a solo gigging musician. Again, I see and sincerely commend loop performers for all they do. But I've never been able to enjoy a full looping show. You've touched a few times on why and I commend you for making an effort in that regard. But the reasons I can't stay engaged for a whole looper show are: 1. It takes far too long to get to the entertaining part of a song. 2. Regardless of how proficient the performer is at seamlessly multitasking, he or she seems disconnected from the audience, unable to fully engage. 3. Instead of an entertaining mix of beloved, average length, classic covers, every show becomes a test of endurance for the listener where every one among the minimized number of songs is drudgery while waiting for the payoff. 4. Dynamics, mood, and lyrical meaning are all but lost because every song takes on a droning sound like a 10 minute electro dance track. When I go to a solo show, I'm not looking for a full band experience. When I want that, I go see a band. What I want from a solo performer is to be moved by dynamics, touch, and lyrics so effectively that I feel the experience of a song as if I've lived it myself. To me, that's lost in looping. But looping IS far better than backing tracks.

Great tips, I'm just beginning at this with an rc 300, I like it a lot and I couldn't agree more with you! I have watched too many people that think they have to add everything they have to the loop and as it comes in it sounds enchanting but after about 30 seconds it just sounds irritating. So, that's what I want to learn is how less is more, the basic lay down to play through out and what to add and delete and redo as you go through. Thanks again.

These 3 tips are priceless in avoiding monotonous loops and are exactly why you are my go-to channel to learn looping. I performed in bands and as a solo with MIDI tracks I created for over 3 decades. I am now interested in playing as an acoustic solo with a looper. Your channel has been an awesome resource for me. Many thanks...you are the best!

Nice, practical and musical tips! The most important takeaway for me is to not bore the crap out of your audience while you're building tracks but arrange it so that it's musical from the start. Adding stops is another great tip. My tendency is to play full songs and then noodle on them but hopefully the picking/chording of the song is interesting enough to listen too.

Brian Donoghue - I agree with you! The first solo I heard using a looper and many since then annoyed me and gave me a bad impression of loopers period!. It would take them 5 minutes to build the loop, 3 minutes singing the song, another 5 minutes noodling around on the guitar, then 3 more minutes singing and finally the end. Good grief that is boring and monotonous as hell. At that rate you'd only need to know 12 songs for a 4 hour gig...lmao!

The playing had EVERYTHING to do with the tutorial. You would be great without the looper, but you are greater still with it. I have looped for years and yes I use the dickens out of recording first verse while singing and it is ready for my solo....which is to break up looper numbing. I really like your stop before chorus. I also love your voice, song choice, guitar choice, guitar playing and treatment of each song. Yes these are somebody else's songs but you make them your signature version. I have always wanted a way to do free falling because it get's requested sooo much. I think I am going to borrow liberally that version. Thanks for being a real player and sharing your time and talents. Cheers!

@@enb heya! Merry Christmas 😊I'm basically playing 6ths on the guitar - 1st and 3rd strings together. Are you able to jump on a laptop to watch it? If you click the 'settings' gear icon in the bottom on a laptop or computer you'll see 'playback speed' and can set it as low as .25 speed. Let me know if that helps!

Great tips and video! Couldn't agree more on shortening the "loop build". I watch all kinds of KZread loopers and long intro's can easily suck the life out of a performance. I am currently using a Boss RC-300 and love having the flexibility of 3 separate tracks. I just recently added a Roland GR-55 to the mix and am having fun with the endless possibilities it provides. BTW- Great guitar work and vocals...Cheers!

  • @AidanMooreacoustic

A lot of that is down to the limitations of the looper. I use the RC300, which allows you to have 3 channels, and you can have a different length loop on each channel. Apart from Ed Sheeran's custom build, it's the ONLY pedal on the market that gives you that option, meaning you're not having to construct long and perfectly in time percussive loops to fit with your vocal and guitar loops, which you usually want to be 4/8/16 bars. Happy to share how you unlock that little feature in the RC300 if it's of any use. Once you get that down, there's no other pedal really for in depth live looping gigs. PS great video mate!

Very cool. I'm using the RC-300 and am slowly adding a decent repertoire to it. I've probably only scratched the surface of what I can do with it, but it's already working well for me and bringing songs back to me that are really quite dull without it. Good tips - I stumbled upon the dropping things out by accident one time when I hit the wrong button and stopped the rhythm guitar and it sounded great when the it came back in again. Dynamics baby!

So.. would you share your favorite song or album from them? That might help me find a place to start, cause I know they have a lot of music
