How I Build Guitar Loops (One Man Band)

Музыка

New! - My Daily Guitar Warm Ups - bit.ly/guitarwarmups
Build Guitar Loops - This is how I build guitar loops and loop tracks as a one man band for shows! The loop pedal I'm using in this vid (which is amazing!): amzn.to/2JCLPg8
I did a lot of shows last week as a one man band (solo loop artist), and I create a pretty full sound that gets people up dancing and grooving for the evening - even as a soloist.
How do i do it?
By looping.
I record a guitar part, a rhythm part/percussion, a bass line, then often overdub other guitar parts as I build the track further later on. I'm also free to solo over the guitar loop that I have just created as well which is cool. I also use a few different effects for different songs to break it up and have different sound scapes in my loops.
Feel free to message me if you want any particular info on how to build your own guitar loops!
Gear I'm using:
Voicelive 3 from TC Helicon: amzn.to/2CvFfEa
Boss OC3 Octave Pedal: amzn.to/2kEe3eY
LR Baggs DI: amzn.to/2kGajcT

    Hey David thank you so so much for the tutorials. I have only been looping for around 6 months and as a solo one man band playing covers in a five star hotel six nights a week in London. I find the hotels are not wanting tracks just guitar and looping. So it kind of forced me into looping. I absolutely love it but it’s taught me to stretch my playing ability also. Interestingly I have the Voicelive 3 extreme and the OC 3 but have recently added a RC 300 looper and it’s just so much easier with a separate unit. I still use the looper on the VL but found the RC to be amazingly more simple. Please continue doing loop tutorials. I need all the help I can get. Thanks mate appreciate it all 👍🏻👍🏻🎶

    That surprises me as the voicelive looks easier than the RC 300? I tried an RC300 for a good hour in a music shop once and got nowhere with it and I’m usually adept with these things. The voicelive looks easier as you don’t have to be constantly bending down and changing parameters. The downside is it’s really only a two track looper isn’t it with the third being rhythm? I still think the best looper out there today is an app called Group the Loop on the iPad but you need a foot controller, audio interface and guitar fx to use it live!!!!

    Thanks! I use 12-53 Elixirs on my gat. Find it's a good balance of fullness, and if I'm doing a heeeap of gigs then it's not punishing on my fingers either :) I don't have a huge opinion on tweaking the guitar preamp personally - I am to set my preamp to a reasonably high level, and just get the best direct balance of EQ so my starting point is as close to what I want. Be keen to hear your thoughts more on this though actually ay! :)

    I was playing yesterday using the boss ve-8 pedal which has a Looper and busking live for the first time using loops. I really appreciate your video because it gives some good tips. And a real example of a great song. I only use the loop for some simple rhythm. I did build a bit of an instrumental and that was pretty good too. But I guess I did have some question of how you move off the loop smoothly? Because you build something up and then suddenly you click it off if you have only one Loop to deal with and it just disappears. Meaning it might not be a smooth transition and suddenly bring out a silence. It might be different if you could have the Rhythm or percussion as one Loop and the guitar rhythm has another lube and some background vocals as another loop and if you have a pedal controlling them all separately that might be another scenario. I'd like to be able to do that at some point but right now I only have a pedal which can do one Loop and I want to figure out how to use it wisely.

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Cyrus thanks for your comment! There is a way to do this even using only one pedal (build up a big loop and then drop back only some of it). It's a little bit sneaky and just takes a bit of thought when creating your loop at the start. Which pedal are you using to perform with at the moment?

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    Thank you. The LR Baggs anthem would be the upgrade to go for beyond that - however, because it has a mic as part of the pickup if you record whilst singing you will get a bit of that in the mix haha! No guarantees sadly regardless of the pickup system, as it depends on the guitar build and resonance also as to what will get picked up and included. The good thing with the LR baggs anthem series though is you can change the mix of the mic to suit 👌. Hope that helps!

    hey Robert - I will take a photo or short vid of my settings for you. It's something that can be a struggle, usually I find having a lower gain and also using a feedback buster (or similar) also helps a lot as soon as there is overdrive or distortion with an acoustic gat.

  • @bobbeanbags

    Thanks! I’ll look forward to it! Also, while you at it if you could shoot the bass and percussion settings. I’ve found that the bass sound out of the VL3 is not that good but separate pedals like the TC Subn’up and others are much better. I assume when you are looping bass effect or percussion it is with a dry setting? I’ve been told to use the STEP function for this but have not figured it out yet. So my percussion and bass loops have my acoustic guitar effects which is not optimal. Thanks again!

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    5 жыл бұрын

    I use my standard guitar settings when doing percussion, but I have a pretty light reverb so it works pretty well. You could button map to turn the reverb on or off for percussion if you wished though (or any effect for that matter). I did a video on my specific bass settings here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKl8qtR-dLmsY5M.html. You have to be super careful to play only one note (making sure other strings are muted etc) when playing 'bass' with the VL3 as it doesn't track well if there's any other noise, but I do like it's bass sound as it's soooo customizable! I use an entirely separate setting for it. So for my main settings it's patch 350, then bass sound is saved to 349, and i make sure my vocal settings are the same on both. I do the same with my lead sound (so it's saved to 351). then I can simply switch up or down to change settings. make sense? Photo of lead still on it's way haha!

Any advice would be great. Thank you.

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Nate! This was running through a 15inch PA speaker and I think I recorded the audio simply from the room for this particular video. Drums usually aren't great to put through a guitar amp because of their bottom end, which guitar amps aren't usually designed to handle that well. It obviously does work, but not designed for it. In saying all of this, I've often gigged with my tone running though my guitar amp (which means all my bass and guitar slapping rhythm sections going through the amp too, I keep my amp volume low as a foldback essentially, and then crank the rest through a full PA. So that low tone is going through my guitar amp, but not at crazy loud levels that push it. Probably still not idea, as the small speaker is trying to push a bunch of air with the low frequencies, but haven't killed anything yet! 😂Ideally I'd run your guitar stuff through your amp, and get a full range speaker that you can run your drums through. Otherwise, use headphones/in ears so it's not too obvious, and you could run the drum machine into a desk, and record straight out from the desk (with headphones to hear), that way you can run the guitar amp signal into the desk, the drum machine direct into the desk, and don't actually need another speaker or full PA system. Ideas anyway! ....and a super long reply haha! Hope that's useful!

    Hey Chris, at the moment I'm running... a TC helicon voicelive 3, an AER amp (compact mobile 60 ii), and a boss OC3 octave pedal. That's really it - super simple setup. I have a love/hate relationship with the voicelive 3 - AMAZING pedal, however you do need to switch a lot of screens rather than having dedicated pedals available to hit in an instant. I have two different PA's that I run depending on the gig, jbl eon 610's and a 12 inch sub, or yamaha dbr 15's with a 15' sub. I might do a gear video shortly now that you've mentioned it, a rig run down as such. The boss OC3 (amzn.to/2PdghjT) was a gamechanger for my solo shows though. what are you thinking of getting atm?

  • @chrisk6412

    David Shanhun thanks Dave, not sure I want something simple and hopefully compact. I will get the Boss OC3 for sure. Do you run your guitar straight through the PA or into an amp first. I was always a n electric guitar player amp then mic'd to the PA

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    6 жыл бұрын

    the voicelive 3 has some good amp sims built in, and is a good compact way to go, however i've found for acoustic i really like the tone of the AER amps, so i'm now back to running that with a DI out of that into the PA. I did for quite a while run just the voicelive 3 into the PA with a few EQ tweaks inside the voicelive. that worked well and was a good compact simple setup. The question is probably if you want to learn how to use the voicelive 3 (it genuinely does take some time), or have individual pedals. Otherwise I'd recommend a DI like the LR Baggs one to get the tone and tweaks you're after. I used one of those instead of an amp for a while. Do you know the ones?

    Hey David, I'm getting to more of your videos slowly but surely. You make this look so effortless. I'm new at looping but starting to get the hang of it. When I try to record a few Odubs on one loop though, I notice the trim on my mixer is clipping now and then. I realize that with each Odub I'm adding more gain so I set my Odub Decay parameter at 98% as Helicon suggested...but it doesn't help. Can I ask what you do so as to not have this problem? Thank you.

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    Hi Germain! I'm pretty sure I have mine set to 95% (so pretty similar). It can be a problem the more that you add but it should be possible to find settings that work for you with a bit of experimenting. Are you using any effects on your overdubs? Sometimes the gain or volume on effects can be significantly louder than your normal guitar sound and that can make it an issue. Perhaps set your mixer gain/trim lower initially, and watch to see if it changes significantly with any one particular overdub - let me know what you find! 😊

    Hey David. As far as effects on my overdubs, I do use a little boost (on lead overdubs as I want them a little louder in the mix)...so maybe that's the problem right there. I'll try your suggestion of lowering my trim level when I know I'm going to do several overdubs. I'll let you know what happens. Thank you.

  • @davidshanhun

    Absolutely. All loop pedals allow you to do this. Some of them allow you to record separate tracks and mute either of them at different times whilst keeping the other one going.

    Hey Jake! Just saw this brother! There's a video I did around timing that may help - kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2h_2suslNjFqJM.html. Let me know if they help you (or not!). One other trick is to sing what you're playing whilst looping - doesn't have to be perfect, but singing some part/rhythm even making some sort of noise similar to your strumming pattern can work wonders to tighten things up! 😊

    Great vid - I did watch your other video about creating the bass octave sound, but just noticing from this you create the 'bass' sound using your Voicelive, and the 'beat' from your boss octave? Do you rate the pure 'bass' sound using the Boss Octave pedal?

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Stu - it's a long while since I used the pure bass sound from the OC3, but I did use it for a bit and found it to be fine. When I realised I could do something with the OC3 that the Voicelive 3 couldn't do - I only had one option really - use the pure bass from the Voicelive 3 and use the polyphonic rolled off bass doubling from the OC3. Would be interesting to test which bass sound I prefer comparing them now. If I liked the OC3 better though it would mean having to use 2 OC3's in my chain to do what I want though haha! From memory i'm pretty sure the OC3 tracked better, but the VL3 isn't great on tracking so it wouldn't be hard haha! Not sure if that's super useful to you but perhaps? 🤷‍♂️

  • @stuj

    @stuj

    @@davidshanhun Are you saying that, the with Boss OC3, the settings you use are ideal for beat generation, however if you wanted that pure bass sound you would then need to change settings on the OC3 mid-song (obviously not ideal). My main thing is getting a pure bass sound with some device, then any type of beat generation on top of that would be cool but I'll be looking at a midi device to support beat generation later so would rather nail the 'pure bass'. Close to ordering the OC3 online now actually. Love your feedback here. Thanks!

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@stuj heya. I mostly use the OC3 in the polyphonic mode so that I still have some bass on the guitar if i stop the loop to then play the bridge section. I could do with or without it for beat generation at this point, although it's a bonus to have. Essentially what you said is accurate - if I wanted to record pure bass lines i'd have it set differently at the start when I was looping bass, then mid song (while the loop was happening for sure) I would have to reach down and switch the settings - doing this every song that has a part that I breakdown would be super frustrating haha. If you nailed the pure bass from this - you could still easily leave it on the 'pure bass' settings and overdub lightly on your rhythm/beat to get a better bottom end. Lots of options, but prob most important to you is getting that bass into your loops eh! Otherwise there is the sub n up from TC, or the Electro Harmonix POG series - these from what I've heard around and about are the best at tracking for pure bass - but I don't have one or haven't tested them! Again, hope that's useful!

    Question. The only way to use say harmony or delay or reverb you would need to just have a preset above or below what your building with. You can’t get out of the loop screen ? Thanks You’re a badass

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    Жыл бұрын

    not sure I quite understand the question... but. If you're wanting to stay on the looping screen only and get a harmony etc, then yes - copy the exact preset you are using to the next preset number - and set the harmony to 'on' or effects etc that you're wanting. then you can stay in the looper screen and still have changes. Was that what you were asking? Otherwise - once you've created your loops - you can just hold down the layer button to exit the looper screen and you'll have access to turn on and off all of your effects as normal while the loop continues. Hey Fionn - In this particular track I usually build it while I sang live - so I started with the chords, and then started singing over that loop, and while I was singing I would put in the rhythm and keep building the track. Saves waiting a bunch of time at the start of each song for the audience just listening to loop building. Of course some tracks I spend more time at the start building loops, I just try to avoid that being every song!

How do I have it play for the duration of the whole original loop? Do I just have to play the second lick for 20 seconds to fully fit in the first loop? Thanks 🙏🏼 hope that made sense

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Deeken :) You can do this in reverse (playing the 2 second lick on the first track then recording the longer loop on track 2) - but the shorter you record initially, the harder it is to make sure the longer part comes in in time! Essentially the best way to do it is what you are doing, and then to play the second lick for the full length of time that the first loop is. Just for reference, you can't record a second track that is shorter than your first one.

    Hi David. I've been watching your videos for a while. I wonder how you can make the sound of the box just by tapping your finger on the guitar. Is there any internal pickup or just piezzo?

  • @davidshanhun

    @davidshanhun

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Marcio - it's just the piezzo pickup under the saddle/bridge. The guitar is pretty resonant so I'm lucky with getting a lot of these sounds - I have tried with other guitars and often have to do a string slap or muted strum to get a snare type sound. Perhaps this might work for you?
