    I feel like one of the best skills to being a good interior designer is having a STRONG work ethic. Too many times in my program, I would see a new class of truly gifted students coming in and only see half of them coming back the following year. The turn over rate was high because the program was harder than they anticipated once they got past their first year design classes. I never had any natural artistic abilities, so I was the worst at hand sketching in my class. I was a slow space planner and learning the softwares was a HUGE learning curve for me. The hard part wasnt learning all of those things..... it was the amount of work and hours we had to put into our projects in order to succeed. That was my only skill.... I was a hard ass worker and the rest I was able to learn. I was the only one from my class that eneded up graduating. Even now at my job, I work the most insane hours sometimes. Its so important to understand that interior design is so so so much more than decorating a room. Its being an artist and a problem solver at the same time. Its knowing how to switch from designing to production and balancing the two at the same. Its multiple trades combined into one profession and with that comes a lot of responsibility and pressure. I love love love LOVE this profession and truly believe that there is a space for everyone, anyone can learn it... Just mentally prepare yourself for what it brings.

    I do miss the most important skill of an interior designer! The most important skill is communication! It is more important than all the other skills you mention in your video. Listen how they live and like to live, listen what their colors are, and make a space their home or office. And without good communication skills you can not explain your ideas and make the client "see" their future environment.

    I absolutely agree! It’s actually the most important aspect before the design process even begins, to ensure that the space meets the clients expectations.

    Totally what I was thinking; communication. You are basically the therapist of every client. There is a lot of psychology involved in this field and you have to learn a lot of emotional intelligence.

    Oh WOW! I love this video! I have learned so much! I know this is what I want to do - I wanted to become an architect my whole childhood but this year, after some consideration (and experience) I realised maybe it wasn't for me, so I thought of the next best thing: an interior designer! I knowa I have a passion to work with spaces and play around with functionality, design, colour and aesthetics. It always came to me. I'm not sure why, but taking physics in college has actually _helped_ me in building skills to learn what is realistic, what is not. What is functional, what isn't. But youve just earned a new subber!! Tysm 🥰🥰💗💗💗

    very helpful and informative video. You bring up great points that are very direct and hands on. I helped design a house renovation as a real estate agent and I absolutely love design. I live on Pinterest. The trickiest thing about designing on this project was collaborating with other designers and the general contractor who was also overseeing the whole design. The other hard challenge was designing a tight or small space because you have fewer options and you need to really think about everything that's going to give you the best functionality and usage of the space. A few inches can change a design and also being very detailed so your plumbers or electricians are placing pipes and electric where you need it to come up with the best design outcome.

I’m a late bloomer who left my job in education and want to peruse my passion for design. Without going back to college for a degree, how can I get a more ‘concise’ level of education and experience to get myself started in this field. Do you pass on the design to an architect to sign off the building compliance? This is the only thing I’m concerned about, I know nothing about building standards, and to be honest that bores me even thinking about it 😢

  • @aandreatru

    @aandreatru

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi, that depends on the local building codes of your city. Here in Vancouver, Canada, as of today you need an architect to sign off building permits if the project is greater than 600m2, (typically this applies to commercial projects and larger residential homes) also this varies from province to province, and also other countries may have different regulations. Hope that answers your question. Cheers
