As creatives, we tend to emphasize the technical skills and our ability to use software above everything else, BUT, the truth is that in order to be able to direct a campaign, lead a team, and handle the pressure of tight deadlines and multiple clients, we need to develop the soft skills as well. At the end of the day, Graphic Design is about communication, so it is very important to focus not only on learning programs like Photoshop and Illustrator, but also on how becoming more effective at communicating our ideas verbally and learning to work with clients and/or a design team.
These are the skills that have helped me personally as I worked my way up from an entry level designer, to a junior designer, a senior designer, and then to becoming an Art Director for companies like World Wrestling Entertainment and Major League Baseball. If you are looking to have a long-lasting and successful career in the field of Graphic Design, remember that it is crucial to have a well-rounded skill set that includes technical abilities AND these 3 skills.
