I’m probably bias, but I can’t justify the price on the Gerber or Bugout when the Kershaw Iridium is so good. I understand the steel differences, but D2 is not a bad steel. I really just think it’s the Made In China vs USA thing and that is not a 100 dollar difference to me. Maybe I’m crazy, but after quite a lot of pocket time with the Iridium I have no complaints, and that’s incredible for $65.

I was pretty stoked to see this. Gerber is staying competitive. There's a lot to like about the design and features of the Assert. For the price, it does seem you get a bit more in the way of features vs a Bugout, but people customize their Bugouts to high heaven. Will this allow for that, or are people going to buy these and put them to work instead of treat them like pocket jewelry? 😁

I was shocked to see Gerber release this out of the blue, and that for the first time seems to have listened to the community. @@gideonstactical Thanks again 🙏. And let's hope they make a larger version of the Assert in the near future. The lightweight EDC community will certainly enjoy this smaller sub 2 Oz package. But at least Gerber got a pretty good blueprint now to work from. And if they polish up the washers and pivot area and make sure the omega springs are strong and consistent, that action will probably smooth out quite a bit. But does not seem like a bad first try at all.

The first actually decent knife I ever got as a kid was a Gerber folder. No idea the model, it was a thick boy. Kinda "tactical" themed but didn't even have a pocket clip lol. (I still have it.) Brand will always hold a place in my heart, it's nice to see they have been putting out very competitive knives recently.

I talk a lot of smack about Gerber these days, but I admit they did good here. It's a little small for me, so I agree with you that if they added half an inch to it I'd be interested for real. And I would take that over a Bugout any day.

I wish you would compare those three to the Gerber Scout. It's a lower budget knife however I got a group of Boy Scouts it might be perfect for. Let me know if you decide to do a review on the Gerber Scout knife

I hate having to carry my mini-Bugout in the neighboring “3” rule” city. Good knife, but the handle is too small for any real use. This Gerber may push both my bugouts out of my lineup.

Is the bugout broke in vs the gerber not broke in? I’m wondering how the action will be after a few months of use. I prefer thumb slit vs studs. The studs can get in the way.

Hey man, love Gerber VINTAGE knives. LOVE EM! But this may make me look at their current offerings. Great review btw, nerdy but relevant. Hate to play by hand but since I haven’t won several million….. Any chance that GERBER, yes GERBER takes the SERE knife and reinterprets it? It is time. AM failed, and I’m not looking forward to making one for myself. Big LST Re-Boot anyone?

Small knives thrive when they are slicey and fidget friendly. I think it’s a bit of a miss on Gerbers part. If it had bearings I could absolutely see this being a popular urban carry. Keep the robustness and washers for knives that need them in harder use.

In regards to the ability to close the knives to me it's not that big a deal because I like to carry a lock back Blade with me and I actually carry one of those Gerber Scouts but some people say is a cheap knife but I have had mine for over 10 years and I use the sucker every single day. I do like nice that open with a button or the sliding button because it is easier orgonomic Lee but as far as the closing I usually just put the knife against my side like my rib cage or my other hand or arm or against a box or whatever is in front of me. I think fast appointment can be important but being that most knives are liner locks anyway it doesn't really matter to me if it takes me a couple of seconds to put the knife back into the handle. And with all due respect to Benchmade and tops and other companies I feel that they're nice well well made are too high in price.

lockbacks are way stronger than axis locks anyway, or almost all locks other than the tri-ad lock (which is just an improved lockback). I started using only lockbacks, they feel way more solid and I trust them much, much more. I've already injured my hands enough that I've lost dexterity in my most dominant finger and am paranoid of having my hands get cut up more.
