3-sided rotary CNC routing with the Shapeoko - Carving a Koi fish
By Dennis Van Hoof, from Top o' Arts (topoarts.com).
This video shows modifications to the Shapeoko XXL CNC frame and bed to accommodate a manual rotary setup that allows for multi-sided 3D carving of objects (along a B-axis) that are too big to fit underneath the X-gantry rail.
To show proof of concept, I carved a Koi fish from a solid stack of plywood with 3-sided CNC routing.
Software used:
- Meshmixer to create the 3D Koi fish
- Vectric VCarve to generate the tool paths
- UGS Platform to send the Gcode to the CNC
Materials used:
- Everbilt 1 inch square tubes with 5/16" holes spaced 1" apart
- 1/4" steel triangular plates
- 3/8" bolts (the 5/16" holes were widened with the drill press)
- 18 mm (3/4") Sande plywood: 4 sheets of 600x600 mm (4'x4')
- Surfacing bit to flatten and pocket the stock: WhiteSide #1027A
- Extra long roughing bit: Amana Tool end mill #46590
- Extra long finishing bit: Amana Tool ball nose #46490

Having been in the machining industry for almost 20 years, I am not easily impressed. This whole process on the other hand, very impressive. Great job.

Thanks, hearing this from a seasoned pro means a lot to me.
That is the most clever way to make a 3D carving on a CNC machine that i have ever seen.
EXCELLENT! Brilliant idea on the rotary holder. I wouldn't be surprised if Shapeoko starts offering it as an option/up-grade!

I asked shapeoko how many axis they could cut. They replied yesterday saying only what you see. Then i see this and i know straight away its amazing. Totally adds more to the machine in a huge way. It needs to be motor driven
This is amazing, for someone new to CNC this is what inspires us newbies. This is truly out the box thinking.
that is some solid engineering. The 3D carving is a bonus, this is great for making triangular pieces, or with new plates, all sorts of polygons.
Brilliant! As a Shapeoko owner I'd love to try this but didn't imagine I could without some expensive lathe attachment until I saw this. Great work!
I have made many creations with my CNC that seem to impress others. You on the other hand are insane! It is such a pleasure to watch your videos.

Thank you for your kind words! I hope to inspire and entertain; that's all. Keep up the good work too! :)
Outstanding work. I can't begin to understand the thought process that went into designing the various carves, but I am still very impressed. Great work.
This is brilliant, and super helpful! Thank you!
I was very impressed with your triangular brackets to position the piece and how easy it was to rotate the piece and relock it in place.
Wow, looks like I'm keeping my Shapeoko to the easy stuff like signs and basic cuts. This is next level work.
What an incredibly informative and entertaining video! Instant subscribe! I built my own home CNC router almost 8 years ago; and am designing a second one. I will use these ideas to facilitate this kind of carving. Thank you - this was a gift to the world.
Amazing work, brilliant design with simple engineering that's understandable and repeatable. Genius.
Thinking outside the box has never been this impressive. You're too smart.

I've seen plenty of people using CNC machines to make cool singular items, but something I've never seen is somebody attempting to redecorate their entire home with them. When you see a dramatic victorian mansion, you'll see carvings all over the place. Stuff in banisters, columns, doors, eves. I know it would take forever, but you can do it over time, piecemeal. Find a part of your house, like a banister, and replace parts of it with something more interesting. See how the project evolves over time. SHARE THAT!
Amazing work!!! It opens up home woodworking to the 3D world!!!
Dennis, you’re the baddest CNCer!! Just awesome work! Thank you for sharing your detailed insights on various challenges and possible solutions. Your videos are consistent in your approaches to challenges.

I have seen many items made on the Shapeoko on KZread but you are in a class of your own. Absolutely brilliant design, engineering and CNC cutting. Very well done.
Outstanding work - I'm blown away! Well done!!
I'm glad I came across your excellent practical video :)
Wow!!! What an impressive project. Really enjoyed watching how you did this. Job well done.
Congratulations on the work, I really liked the configuration of the supports and the solution to limit the height of the Z axis, very cool!
I agree with all the positive comments. With an extruded rail cnc, this is above and beyond what shapeoko intended for their users to do. 10/10 for creativity.
Really neat setup, and some good lessons learned. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!
Amazing level of planning and thought. Thanks for sharing!
This is GENIUS!! Fantastic job!! Thank you for sharing this.
You're a real master man, Never seen someone do it and I can't believe someone would do such a thing.

Thanks, Giorgio! I guess it's good I made a few KZread videos, to convince any skeptics out there of what you can do with the Skapeoko. :)
I'm not even into this stuff and thought that was cool and well done. The jig is brilliant
Wow...! Please make a scorpion chair in similar fashion..! It will be a treat..!!!
Brilliant, Dennis you are a clever guy, thank you for filming, editing, and sharing your process 👍😊

You are a genius. I'll look forward to your next work.
Very cool way to approach this. Thanks for sharing.
I think my favorite thing about this was the triangle plate you created for your rig... all very impressive man.
Blown away. Super impressed.
Thank you for your video Dennis! Watching all that effort you put in for this amazing 3D cut helped solidify in my mind how happy I am sticking with 2.5D for my own projects ;-)

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words! This kind of feedback keeps me motivated to create and post videos like this. Maybe you already saw it, but check out my new video where I carve version 2.0 (the "real deal") of this Koi fish from a branch and copper-colored epoxy resin. Next video will be a DIY project to carve a 3D sea shell box - I'll make those files available to download for free. So stay tuned...!

Een zeer intelligent oplossing......bravo.....
Very nice work. I’d love to see a full blown tutorial on what you had to do in Vcarve.
master class work
very nice idea!
The jig you made is damn smart! I have the same size Shapeoko with the HDZ as well and might actually use your design for rotary milling. I wanted to cut out a rhino head and it looks like your approach might finally help me do it!
Love it bro. Keep it up.
Brilliant!
Just brilliant!
