  • @casillasscorer

    Jay Cole advice is hard to give personally, but when people say some days everything you do is going to sound bad, those days definitely happen. Find something that completely distracts you from your mix for a while, bike riding or something like that. I found that making sure I don’t hear a track too many times is important so you can be objective about how it sounds. And take breaks often. For me, every 30 minutes or so I’ll just step away for a few minutes, kind of a reset for my ears, again for the objectiveness it gives me

    Yeah. because it uses a really soft curve down. Most people don't hear 16K anyway so if it would boost starting from 10k down (which is what your ear perceives as air, anyway), it would also create a resonance 10k and sound like crap. Having a resonant peak at 16k isn't good either, as it can take energy from the rest of the spectrum when it comes to compressing and maximizing the loudness of the mix. Never used it, but that is how it looks like. It's kinda like a MAAG EQ4 (air band on) + Soothe. I would use it more on a vocal to get some air out, but i guess it also work on a mix bus, although i would rather mix actual tracks that way that the master chain only needs maximizing. For example, Chris Gehringer doesn't really use any compression in his mastering chain.

    @@madsonit I don't think most people can't hear 16 k. My left ear sucks but still I get nice air out of boosting the 12 - 17/18 k frequencies every now and then. But I am listening for it.. and that's the difference. Most people will hear it, but most people don't know what to listen for when it's getting boosted.. but that doesn't matter, because they will still like a boost in that area, if it sounds good.

  • @madsonit

    @madsonit

    3 жыл бұрын

    BSmiet89 16k is not “airy”. What you hear as airy is 9k-11k. Just put a sharp bell filter on a pink noise sound and sweep it up and see where your ears stop hearing. You’ll be surprised. Make sure you don’t play loud as you can damage your ears

    RAUM from Native Instruments is another amazing reverb plug-in! It has three different algorithms, which are all a bit weird and experimental, but I like using it for some stranger, textural stuff. Plus, if you're a bit more conservative with the dials you can get plenty of lush, standard verbs too! The UI is also lovely and intuitive, and there's a ton of tonal control. I made each algorithm its own audio effect rack in Ableton for easy editing on Push, and it's just such a lovely ambient tool. :)

    My secret weapon is just everything about the Hans Zimmer Cinematic Percussion VST. You can get clarity and organic sounds WITHIN a large cinematic space. I frequently use a variation on the Motown effect for vocals. Run your vocal into a separate aux channel, over-compress using an LA-2A or Fairchild style of compressor (I have had luck with other compressors like a DBX 160 or 1176 just depends on what you want), turn up the air of the vocal (a Pultec styled EQ will work nicely and doesn't destroy the phase relationship), and then turn up the parallel aux with your vocal you processed normally. Gives it a nice breathiness and can be dialed to taste while not sounding unnatural. You might need to run a de-esser on the vocal buss depending on the vocalist and microphone but every time I have used it the vocal ended up sounding cleaner and would cut through the mix more. I can recall one time I didn't use it which was for an East Coast rap vocal since he wanted a grittier, more mid heavy sound, with a DJ Premier styled instrumental. Try it out! Worse case if you don't like it, don't use it.

    yall, if you want secret weapons, check out airwindows. according to him he's a patreon supported free plugin dev. according to me he's an "insanely technical details of mix engineering asmr" KZreadr. he has made a ton of free plugins; his philosophy seems to be to make each plugin do one thing unreasonably well, like a plugin designed to only have one preset and a few knobs, and his plugins generally don't have custom ui, they're just little useful algorithms. I always end my master bus with airwindows Dark now, and the distance plugin is a nice preset for eqing something to sound far away without echo or reverb. haven't poked through his library in much depth yet so I'm curious what other folks like from him

Density can do the gullfoss brightening-without-being-regular-eq thing if you work it a little. I often use it for that. BitShiftGain and Console6 are also favorites of mine. *FREE EQUIVALENTS I USE* TDR Nova is a 4 band dynamic eq, and Analog Obsession (A.O.) Dynasaur is a 5 band analog style dynamic eq The M4L Pitch Hack device, ableton grain delay, and even the valhalla freqecho are sorta like valhalla shimmer Voxengo - Oldschoolverb and Anwida - DX Reverb Light model 70s-80s digital reverbs, just like valhalla vintageverb i also love the M4L Covolution Reverb, TAL - reverb 4, and Arturia - Rev140; and the built in Apple Matrix Reverb is actually my favorite for room sounds The W.A.Prod. - Combear, Klanghelm - DC1A3, A.O. - LALA and FETISH, TDR - Molot and Kotelnikov, Pulsar - Smasher, and NI - Solid Bus Comp and Supercharger are compressors that can all be used in parallel (i esp like the fetish and dc1a3) Digital Suburban - Exitixe, Fine Cut Bodies - La Petite Excite, A.O. - Lovend, and IKJB - ReFine, are harmonic exciters A.O. makes some of my favorite plugins in general, check out the mpreq, ssq, konsol, yala, and definitely get fetsnap im not sure if the arturia reverb is free at the moment, i got it when it was on sale for christmas or smth sorry for a long comment but hopefully this saves some people some trial, error, and disc space

    because software with all the little things done right is expensive to make, so people either do it for passion or need to be paid to make it their job. and if they choose the latter, depending on what it is, they may not sell that many copies, so they need to charge a lot for each one. that's my guess, anyway, as one individual programmer.

    I feel that gullfoss is really great for reference and giving inspiration or direction to a mix. I find it really useful, specially early in a mix, to "open my ears". But late in the mix, when everything is working and playing together, i find that gullfoss has a tendency to make everything phasy(?) and ruin the punch. Sound great at first but the more i listen to it, i find that decisions inspired by gullfoss is alot better than gullfoss. But i agree, it is really great for bus processing

    With shimmer, you can get the exact same effect in Ableton by using two channels in an audio effect rack and on one putting Abletons grain delay and a wet stock reverb. Adjust volume on channels in audio effect rack as a dry wet knob. if you want a better explanation, watch you suck at producings grain delay tutorial.

    A good way to improve in your music (if that’s what you’re trying to do), is to release stuff. Call it done. Then take what you learned from finishing that one thing and use that knowledge to finish another thing. The key is to just call it done. Work hard on it but call it done once it’s done (you no longer think you can improve it and you’re sick of working on it). Also, something I recently learned (I’ve been doing this for over a decade), is to stop listening to stuff random people say online. For the longest time I was scared of using compression because everyone treated compression like the devil. If it sounds good it is good. That really held me back.
