3 Reasons Why Mathieu van der Poel Will Be The Greatest Cyclist Of All Time | GCN Show Ep. 426

Saturday's Strade Bianche treated us to some amazing bike racing. Chantal van den Broek-Blaak delivered a tactical masterclass to win the Women's race, and the Men's race was won by Mathieu van der Poel delivering an insane amount of power all day long. In this week's GCN Show, Dan and Si discuss why he might just have the potential to become one of, if not THE, greatest cyclists of all time.

Its hardly surprising MvdP is on form early in the season when he just came off his CX season, but still, those power numbers are mind bending. My only concern is that he is still young and maybe he is racing too much and may burnout early and that may prevent him from being regarded as the best ever. But at the moment, he is certainly untouchable

By not mentioning WvA I think you're discrediting him a little too much. Granted, he's not a mountainbiker, but WvA has shown incredible talent in both CX and on the road in many different disciplines. Sprinting, TT, climbing. I am so glad that we are able to witness these two legends battle it out together (with the likes of Alaphilipe, Sagan, Roglic being spectators most of the time).

It's easy to say MVDP is the greatest right now and may well be the greatest of his generation, but to say he's the GOAT at this point of his career could be the GCN kiss of death. Lets wait till the autumn of his career and see if he can eclipse 525 because unless he does 526 or more, he simply won't be the GOAT. BTW, do we have power numbers for Merckx? Hmmm

I didn’t realise he was as old as he is. To be an ATG he really has to concentrate on winning everything he can on the road for the next 2-3 years. As fun as cyclocross can be...we’ve seen you can win at that, we don’t need to see any more.

I think what truly is making MVDP the best of all time is his rivalry with WVA who is arguably going to be the best of all time as well. Imagine if Boonen and Cancelarra went up against eachother all year round?? Well, we have a new and improved rivalry, and I believe it will truly produce the 'best of all time.' We are so very lucky to watch this era of WVA vs MVVP unfold throughout years to come.

I drive for work, I drive trucks and buses daily as I'm a Diesel mechanic. I also cycle to work most days. I've had cars skim past me at high speed for no reason at 6am on empty roads, with plenty of room to over take safely. While driving I've met cyclists coming up one way streets with no lights or hi-viz on or not checking or signalling before the change position on the road.

MvDP is amazing but let’s not forget WVA and his heroics last year-their cyclocross battle has been brilliant this winter-the image of WVA holding his lead and looking for revenge but clearly absolutely on his limit, on a CX Sunday said it all. I really look forward to seeing the pair of them slugging it out this year on the road and seeing what Tom Pidcock can offer too

Guys. On the road, MVDP has won one monument. I bet he will never win a Grand Tour. Merckx won 19 monuments, more than 30 cClassics, and 11 Grand Tours, set the hour record and won hundreds of races on the track. Merckx won the first five TDF’s he rode. Get that? The first five times he road the Tour, he won. I love watching MVDP and he is a phenom. But your lack of historical perspective is a bit embarrassing.

I get your point, but in fairness to GCN, the premise put forward is 'Greatest Cyclist', not 'Greatest Road Cyclist'. Merckx hasn't won Cyclocross world titles, nor won MTB world-level races. 'Greatest Road Cyclist' is Merckx all day long, but when you start to widen the category, it's a bit less nailed on.

Hi Mike, there’s no way anyone will ever surpass Merckx’s record of victories, but the sport in the 60’s and 70’s is not the same one as today. It’s possible to be a better rider than Merckx and not win as much I think.

He beat the world champ up an Alaphilippe-made climb, in a wattage bazooka that made us all speechless. He won the World cyclo-cross in front of a fairly decent rider (???) in WVA, and he's beaten Nino Schurter at MTB. He's beating peak World Champs in all disciplines. Staggering.

MvdP will not dominate in the Grand Tours. Winning stages, yes, green jerseys, if he wants to, sure, but winning overall? No, very unlikely. He hasn't the physique for it. With some specialized training and dieting etc he can improve it for long climbs but even then his chances will be small. But most important, it doesn't appeal to him. Cross, MTB, classics, worldchampionships, stages, small mostly flat-ish stage races like last years BinckBank Tour, yes. Basically everything with climbs with a max of 5 - 10 minutes, especially in the final 50 kms.

Most of the fans didn’t. It is quite ugly, how many cycling media are hyping every 3 months someone else...and not always fairly - or very unfairly to some others. Not far ago they called Sagan GOAT and there was reasonable and factual argumentation for both Sagan and Merckx. All good there. Then everyone start to hype the kid named Remco, even before he delivered. Was (IS!) he hopeful? - of course he deserves attention, but at that time it seemed like some ppl gave him credit for sun coming up. Then suddenly all went to Wout, again he deserved all of the hype, but again, just few months later, media pretend like MVDP is GOAT, even though he doesn’t have enough result, he has strong legs, but does often tactical mistakes and struggle to come up with strategy (if needed). Power is not all. And then - Alphilippe’s power log must look insane too! It was not like MVDP came 10min before 2nd guy. He won, he has biggest punch power (CX is the key here), but HE DID NOT make Julien and Egan look like tourists! ...and then there is other extreme. remember how Mads Pedersen won WC? Poor kid got no hype, many thinking he was lucky cause of weather, but ever since then he prove he is super interesting to watch and very consistent and versatile - but he gets very little attention. :( ...Talk about MVDP being GOAT can come, once he will earn it - but that is couple of “road-rainbow jerseys” away. Doesn’t have to be in a row! ;)
