Read the reloading book. Start with hornady. Dont believe everything from youtube. Question everything you read on these pages. 5.9 is under the manufactures minimums. Dont ever do anything other than what the power, bullet suppliers suggest. There is a difference between a cheap round & being a cheap skate. Never met anyone who loaded less than 6grs or less than 210gr bullet. I havn't bought a 44mag factory rnd in 26years. I would never do what this guy says to do WITH THIS ROUND PERIOD!!! 5.9 win231 for a 44mag swc? No frickn way. Who the hell loads a 200gr bullet? No one I ever met in the 50 yrs i've been on this planet. Im calling bullshit. If you cant handle the 44mag get a 357 & load it with .38's. I havnt bought a factory 44mag in 26 years & wont. I've loaded over 7000 rnds shoot a SW 629 CLASSIC 6.5 BARREL bought in 1992 shoots as good as the day I got it. 7.5 grs win 231 240gr swc, win lg/magnum pistol primers.

a friend an i just bought 2 pounds of hp38 along with 500 rounds of 200 gr .44mag. bullets before i even seen this video and reply. now im glad we chose what we did from your response of how much you like the two combinations of this powder and bullet weight. i need to get me a chronograph. also our bullets have a powdercoat on them. i also want to get a more stout load made up after these we have. Can i do this with the hp38 or should we go with another type of powder?

Really cool video, thanks for taking time to make these......I wanted to mention that of 150 different powders listed in Gun-Guides, with number 1 being the fastest burning and 150 the slowest, Unique is ratted at 31 and Power Pistol at 33, they are very similar in burn rate. In my experience though, slow burning powders typically used in Magnum loads produce heavier recoil and much higher velocity in longer barrels compared to the faster burning powders. I prefer a faster burning powder in shorter barrels, such as Unique or Power Pistol....................From a Ruger 3.5" Stainless barrel using 215gr wheel weight lead in a "44-Special case", I saw an average of 950 fps using 7.7gr of Power Pistol. (loaded from Lee powder data).

Faster burning powders are ideal for a 4" .44 magnum handgun, slower powders like H 110 and WW 296 are not as efficient and need more longer barrels to burn efficiently.

Cool stuff. A lot of people underestimate the effect of the powder on recoil. I mean what's a few grains of powder compared to the bullet? The simplest part to explain is the muzzle pressure. Multiply that by the area of the bullet and that is the force, in pounds, pressing back against you. I did a video for Gun Sam a while back going into just the bullet recoil. I was using impulse in pound-seconds units. I neglected the powder charge in that video. In a 35/36 caliber bullet, the cross sectional area is about 0.1 inches. This makes the math easy because you simply divide the PSI by 10 to get the pounds of force. Then it's all down to Newton's Third Law. This is why the .357 Magnum has such recoil. It is also why compensators on high power rifles work. I could wax on all day about the topic, but you make better lube ;-)

even thou powder coating is all the rave, we still do traditional lube as well, yes its a bit messy but its all experimentation trail and error just like making the perfect cake, by the way gun sam is my go to guy when i want a bullet experimented on he 's great.

@@leadbullets4life I agree. I really like Gun Sam's channel. Paul Harrell is good of course, but he doesn't always bring out the meat target. That's my favorite bit. Ballistics gel channels would be more scientific if they were shooting strings into the block instead of just one round. I know the same criticism can be levied against Gun Sam, but he does do a string over the chronograph, so you know that results may vary. Sam has also refined his presentation in a way that I like. So I am happy to support his channel when I can. I would support more channels, but I keep buying ammo that works well in Gun Sam's tests! LOL.

when i go to the range i collect about a whole coffee can full of range scrap i made 2 video's on it my latest video on making ingots was about 3 weeks ago, im not concerned about bullet hardness too much my loads are not super fast, most people ar not too concerned especially when the lead is free even for the majority of the lead hardness its inbetween 12-13 on the hardness scale plenty hard enough for just plinking loads and thats all that really matters if it works then of course use it, if i want them more durable i then powder coat them.
