3 pedal ideas to increase sustain on the C4 Synth

Музыка

The Source Audio C4 Synth is a great (bass)guitar synthesizer with lots of options, but to me one thing it lacks is sustain, especially on guitar. When you play notes, they decay quickly and you can't play long notes like regular synthesizers with keyboards.
The first way to improve sustain is quite obvious: use unnaturally high compression, with settings you'd normally wouldn't use with your guitar sound. For this example I've used the Zoom MS-70CDR. This multi-effect specializes in modulation, delays and reverbs but is also has some bread and butter effects like EQ's and compressors. I've used the 160 Comp for this example with both the ratio and gain set to max.
The second way is to bypass the C4's volume envelopes and use something else to control this. I've used the TC Electronic Sentry noise gate in this example. This pedal has an effects loop where the C4 is located. So the Sentry analyses the guitars sound, does not apply the noise gate effects yet, sends the dry signal to the C4, that does it's magic, signal goes back to the Sentry and then the gate is applied. So basically a side-chained noise gate. You can combine this with the compressor.
The third way to increase sustain is to use an artificial sustainer, this time the pedal of choice is the Line6 Dr. Distorto. When you turn the drive all the way down, the distortion is completely off, but you can still use its feedback generator. The sustain option of the feedback generator works great in combination with the C4, since they're both monophonic. You can also combine this with the compressor to get infinite sustain.

Bloody useful video, thank you. I use boosters and fuzz to squeeze all the sustain from C4.

@@DIYguitarGuy c4 -> black matter -> kingmaker -> lpb-1. Recently I got Hx stomp so I think I have other options to boost the signal.

Hey cool vid! I wonder, would the Dr. Distorto sustain fix the sudden sustain/feedback stop of the Digitech Freqout if you put it before the Freqout? And if so, would something like the Behringer CS400 Compressor / Sustainer also do the trick?

Thanks! Yeah the Freqout has that sudden stop when the sound is below the threshold. I don't think a compressor could fix this, I have the Keeley Compressor before the Freqout on my current pedalboard (you can see it in my newest videos). I'm gonna try it with the Dr. Distorto in front of it, but I think the Freqout will only feedback longer and won't fix the sudden stop.

Nice job, I don't understand how the noise gate helps with the sustain cause your humbucker is noiseless compared to single coils. I would consider playing a telecaster or a Gibson / PRS / Ibanez guitar which mostly have more sustain than a strat type guitar. Strat sounds scooped and has less sustain because of the bridge and whammy unit design. Mixing in an auto swell effect might help as well with the sustain. The trick I use for getting the most natural sustain and feedback is, splitting the guitar signal on a pedal with L & R outputs, and feeding one output into a tiny practice amp, and placing the small 5-6 inch speaker in between my belly and the back of guitar body. The other output goes to either an amp or the audio interface on the pc. This creates beautiful sustain or feedback depending on the volume and tone you set on the tiny amp, at very low volume. The small amp is barely audible giving most of its energy to vibrating the guitar body.. And as a side note, Meris Enzo is the ultimate guitar synth for me, has incredible features.

Brilliant work! You fixed it! :-) Out of necessity, I've become a firm believer in "hacking" one pedal with another. I am researching the C4's limits right now. If I may ask, do you think the C4 would track reliably after a suboctaver like the BOSS OC5? I'm hoping to use the OC5's "lowest range" mode to keep playing full chords while the OC5 sends a single suboctave to the C4.

Thanks! Well that's a great idea that theoretically could work. The C4 tracks quite well on bass, better than guitar in my opinion. The lowest note on the C4 is B0, that's a low B on a 5-string bass guitar, so besides normal tuning on a guitar you can also use a baritone or 7-string guitar in combination with the suboctave on the OC5. I don't have an OC5 but I'm gonna try your trick with the EHX Bass9, which also has a lowest note option and get back to you. Also if you want to research the C4's limits, you could download the Neuro app and hit View > Show Offline Device Editor > C4 Synth and check out all the parameters.

@@DIYguitarGuy Good thinking! I'll grab the Neuro app and see what I can suss out. I hope the Bass9 Experiment worked out? My Synth9 does not play well with the OC-5 - it really wants to hear a clean guitar, not a tubular suboctave. However, I did a video of the BOSS SYB-5 with the OC-5 and it was really effective, which makes me want a EHX Mono Synth... but the C4 is priority (especially if your Bass9 experiment works). Thanks again for delving into these things.

Hey, I see that I haven't responded yet. I've uploaded a short jam where the Bass9 splits the bass notes from the rest and feeds it into the C4. And it works, kinda... The Bass9 lets the transients pass through before it blocks the high notes, and the C4 is really sensitive when it comes to transients. So I had to pick with my fingers instead of a pick and I suck at that! Everytime I pick a higher note, the C4 warbles a bit. So it works but it's really limited and requires special playing.
