Within walking distance of Latina, immersed in the quiet and greenery, we find Lake Fogliano, the northernmost and largest of the four coastal lakes included in the Circeo National Park.
The lake takes its name from the ancient fishing village on its banks, the Borgo di Fogliano, and was originally very different from what we know today. The history of Lake Fogliano has been intertwined with that of man since prehistoric times, as shown by arrowheads, scrapers and other traces found near its shores. The Romans also settled in this area, carrying out reclamation works that allowed them to make the most of its resources. Subsequently, the area experienced a period of neglect before passing under papal control and, at the behest of Pope Boniface VIII, it was entrusted to the Caetani family, who arrived here and enriched the area with new buildings and a beautiful botanical garden.
