The Natural Historical Archaeological Regional Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Materano, more simply called the Murgia Materane Park, is certainly one of the most spectacular rock landscapes in Italy. It is characterized by a soft rock made up of deep furrows that draw cliffs, gorges, caves, gravines used by man, who has settled there since prehistoric times. The perimeter of the park runs along a narrow strip along the course of the Gravina di Picciano which, starting from the hill of the same name, reaches the confluence of the Bradano river. At the bottom of this Canyon, the homonymous torrent flows, whose slow path of the waters continues southwards along the Sassi di Matera. The canyon is characterized by a soft rock, the so-called "tufo" which has played an essential role in the shapes assumed by the landscape, drawing cliffs, valleys and caves used by man who settled there since prehistoric times. The construction technique was defined as “negative architecture”, that is, it was not built, but material was removed from the rock (by digging it), in order to obtain architectural structures from it. Of particular interest within the park are the 150 rock churches, different from each other in architecture and iconography.
