3 New Tricks to Better Traction. How To Stick To The Rocks.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we take a look at ways to aid in extra traction while driving on and off road. Tricks that have been around for centuries but many don't utilize. We look at doing it with household tools and affordable ones that we can get for the job. The pros and cons of different tooling that address the age old "fast, cheap, quality" triangle. Follow along as we then use the tires out on the trail and see if they really helped with better traction!?!

In the 60's my neighbor was one of the men that started the BAJA Off Road Race. So as a kid I would go and hang out, he would sometimes give me something to do. Well I got to learn tire grooving at a young age. Back then all that you could find as an Off Road Tire were agricultural tires and they were pretty smooth to roll on soils. The Hot Tire Grooving Tool would go to work and for hours I would cut grooves in the tires. What great times to remember. Thank you for a great show. Happy new year!

Russel La rue's idea of sharpening the osculating blade to a knife edge sounds reasonable. I'm thinking that sharpening a round style osculating blade and then pulling it rather than pushing the tool for better control.

A wood carving disk for your 4-1/2" angle grinder grooves tire treads easily & very controllably. The oscillating cutter has worked well for me to sipe my ol' Swampers too. Drowning the tire in what ever traction compound and then wrap them in cling or glad wrap for a few days before your next outing. WD40 also works.

Check out the Milwaukee retractable knifes as it has the control button on the side rather than on top allowing one to apply much more pressure. Also grip the knife with the blade near the little finger and pull toward you. In 14 years on one job in industry cutting half and three-eighths inch thick reinforced rubber sheet with denatured alcohol sprayed on top lube the blade a yard long cut could be made in there passes as quick as you could pull the knife. Try the alcohol, it really works, denatured or isopropyl!

Thanks for the common mans shop tech Cole. With the razor blade spray tire & razor with protectant first, makes it very slippery and easier for razor to pull through (can also set your Butane torch off to side and hold razor to it for a few seconds before each cut). The Sawzall does not make a sipe, the cut is too wide, the way a sipe works it needs to be very thin to cause the suction on wet & icy roads that is their claim to fame. That is also why they are done straight across and not at an angle. Tire groover is the way to go.

I like to use a utility knife and follow up with a Dremel tool with the circular saw accessory tool, it's about an inch or so, in diameter. It makes the razor cuts wider. It will make it so instead of having nearly invisible sipes, they will be 0.5 mm. This helps in the snow, much better, than just a razor thin cut. Try it if you want to turn your 4 days of tire grooving, into a week and a half long grooving, siping and tire warranty voiding party of one. Cuz nobody likes the smell of burning rubber, without tires spinning.

You have a weak oscillating tool. Obviously its not ideal, but I’ve used mine and head no issues cutting right through. Took maybe 1 or 2 seconds to cut a lug off with barley and pressure. And no real force to sipe either. Just aim and it cuts right into it. Takes maybe 15 minutes to do a whole tire. Your cutting tool looks very slow compared. But yes. It is way more precise.

I'm not sure of the specs on the Rockwell, but using the right blade speed is also super helpful. I've never used one on tires, but as a carpenter I've used them.for everything from plaster with metal lath to delicate work with wood. A sharp blade and the right speed make all the difference. And, old blades can be sharpened into other useful scrapers/slicers.
