I have a 1080p 165hz monitor that comes with 4k resolution (Philips Momentum 272M) and I was trying to figure out if I can some how get 144hz on 2k resolution. This is the ONLY video that managed to explain why my monitor cannot do what I hoped it would. Looks like I gotta go get a proper 2k 144hz monitor and keep this one as a 2nd monitor. THANK YOU

    @@Techspin SUBBED! I also may have a tip here if people are unsure about what their monitors can or cannot do. This is also to piggy back off your tip in the video about how monitors are manufactured to perform in either the best refresh rate or the best resolution. If you go into the monitor settings (the one where you access by pressing on the physical buttons on the monitor), go to the "information" tab and it will sometimes tell you what the best resolution and refresh rate is for the best performance.

  • @Techspin

    @Techspin

    Actually the "info" for every monitor we've tested tells you what display+resolution the monitor is currently receiving, not its native resolution or maximum refresh. Refer to the manual or manufacturer's website to see the maximum resolution +frames per second your monitor can do. Be aware we've seen HDMI being limited, usually in framerate, vs DisplayPort which usually delivers the max. This is due to manufacturers cheaping out with a lower spec HDMI port (1.4 instead of 2.0 etc) or setting a limit due to hardware.

    Google shows me your graphics card should have HDMI 2.0b which will support 1440p/144Hz- the issue will be the settings level in game, try to lower the settings until you get good framerates. You might even need medium settings as this card has some power, but not a lot. We also had a lot of issues figuring out why some cables worked fine, and identical looking cables didn't. Usually the DisplayPort option is always the best solution. The Mini DisplayPort (also called MiniDP or mDP) is the way to go in your case. Most 144Hz monitors will have a DisplayPort in, so you just need a mDP to DP cable, and you should be set, get one a bit longer than you need so you have flexibility in placement and use. Shall I just go for a monitor with 1440p display, max 60hz refresh rate, since hdmi 1.4b can only support this the most? Can I use hdmi 2.0 cable for my laptop? I understand that I can only get what 1.4 support.

    You can use an HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 cable to connect your monitor. It has a higher maximum bandwidth so you can upgrade in the future and have higher resolution/refresh rate. If you just want a bigger screen for watching/creating content, then a 4K 60Hz monitor would be better future-proofing, though 30Hz is a bit rough. You could run it at 2560x1440 at 60Hz though, but it won't be quite as sharp as the native resolution, as it has to upscale. If you're getting into FPS gaming, then you could grab a 1440p 144Hz/165Hz monitor now, and plan to upgrade to a newer laptop or PC down the road, meanwhile you could still run it at 60Hz (75Hz if the monitor supports it) for now. Hi i have a question! we bought 65IN 4k tv. we used a 20 ft HDMI cable. we installed it inside the wall and out again to the TV. all of a sudden if we turned off a ny light switch the tv would go off for a few seconds but then back on. So then if i turned on my electronic ignition on my stove burner a brief blank out then back on again. I tried 3 different HDMI 20 ft cables same thing. i then used a very short 6 ft HDMI cable and it doesn't seem to happen.. why? the cables do it outside the wall and inside the wall. the 6 ft cable works perfectly, the tv is 65hz refresh and 120 blah blah. I've talked to Sony, Best Buy and others with no answers. Please can someone at this channel tell me whats happening and how to resolve it?

    For many years I used 60hz . So I have 144hz monitor VG278HE and 3090, and when used DVI-D(VG278)to DP(3090) max was 60hz. In nvidia I managed crank up to 85hz max, above goes out of range. Bought HDMI 2.1 to HDMI 2.1(48Gbps ) and still 60hz and via custom profile could do 85hz. The resolution was 1080P on both profiles. Is something I doing not right?

  • @Techspin

    @Techspin

    Жыл бұрын

    Talking about DVI-D tells me you have an older GPU, so you need to check the specs on it to see which version of HDMI it has. Make sure the HDMI is the only connection to your GPU, DVI should not be connected. All 3 points in the chain need to be HDMI 1.4 or higher: Output device, the gpu / the HDMI cable / and the Monitor input port. The monitor and cable seem fine, so check the GPU. Keep in mind that some monitors give maximum refresh rate over DisplayPort only, and the HDMI refresh rate is often hardware OR software limited to a lower value in the monitor. Though in your case, there's no DP on the monitor, so this won't be an issue. Good luck, let me know how it goes. Please subscribe, thanks for your support!

    Some monitors have limited bandwidth over HDMI 1.4 making it max out at 120Hz. Displayninja.com says 144Hz is possible at 1080p but hdmi.org says 1.4 spec supports 1080p/120Hz, but doesn't say that's the maximum. The maximum is whatever the cable can carry, so it should be able to do 144Hz, but depends on all three links in the chain- GPU connector is HDMI 1.4, monitor input connector is 1.4, and the wire is 1.4 and in good condition- and kinks or fraying in the wire can impact the transmission of the data and make it fall under the throughput it needs for fast refresh rate. Was doing testing this week on some 165Hz monitors and encountered many issues with HDMI. Whenever possible use DisplayPort... it just works! DP is currently always the better option. For an older GPU, it can deliver higher framerates at resolution than the HDMI port (looking at you, GTX 9-series!). For monitors, some arbitrarily lock the HDMI to a certain max framerate. Even the fairly new Gigabyte G34WQC 144Hz Ultrawide was released in 2020, the newer G34WQC-A revision in April 2022 and they still didn't update the HDMI port to 2.1, so only over DP do you get 144Hz, HDMI is locked to 100Hz as that's the maximum bandwidth it can support at 3440x1440 UWQHD. So always plan to use DP whenever possible... the cables are much better priced and more available recently. Please subscribe!

    @Techspin

    Maximum you can do with HDMI 1.4 is 1080p at 144Hz, or 1440p at 75Hz. On older laptops, many USB-C ports do NOT support video, if they do they can be marked with a Thunderbolt or similar icon, but it's not guaranteed by any means. The USB-C has to be wired directly to the laptop's GPU inside, passing through the signal from the GPU in order for a USB-C hub to work. Also, a USB-C hub is not a gaming GPU. An RTX 2060 can run 1440p at 144Hz, however all three parts in the chain must have HDMI 2.0. This means the graphics card port must be 2.0 (it should), the cable must be 2.0, and the input on the monitor must be 2.0 as well. Hope this helps.

    You didn't tell me the monitor model or resolution... You can use HDMI to connect it, however HDMI is limited to 144Hz, so that's the most you'll be able to get, whereas DisplayPort can do 200Hz. Technically, HDMI 2.0 can do 240Hz but only at 1080p. HDMI 2.1 supports higher refresh rates but market adoption is slow and even new devices are shipping with HDMI 2.0 still. The simplest solution will be the easiest, cheapest, and most likely to work- use a DP cable direct to the monitor. You may check to see if your USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt mode, then you could buy one USB-C to DP cable for ~$10 bucks or so. HDMI may be an option, though it will likely be limited to 100Hz. Several issues with USB-C hubs (also called docks) for this. First, they need to support the resolution, and the bandwidth. 3440x1440 is Ultrawide, a non-standard resolution which demands 25% more bandwidth. Second, the frequency is much more than most listed USB-C hubs. You might find one that works, but I wouldn't bet on it. Hope you find a cheap wire-only solution that works for you. Using a hub is a great idea for reducing work, however you don't have a regular display. Important to understand that USB-C to DisplayPort uses the DisplayPort Alt mode, whereas almost all hubs use a chipset onboard providing a display or two. This chipset is an IGP, very basic and certainly NOT capable of gaming. It's unlikely to work, as neither the Anker USB C Hub, PowerExpand 11-in-1 USB C Hub Adapter ($99USD) and Anker 565 11-in-1 USB C Hub, 10 Gbps USB-C and USB-A Data Ports, 4K HDMI and DisplayPort ($109USD) say that they support DisplayPort Alt, or make mention of passthrough. Buy hey, if it works by some miracle, tell us! You could also write to their customer service to enquire, too...

  • @Techspin

    @Techspin

    Жыл бұрын

    Is a USB-C hub the same technology as a DisplayPort wire? No, it's not. You may be able to get video, but you're changing the way the information gets to the screen. It's like a USB to HDMI adapter, just a very basic display output, similar to an IGP on a motherboard. A USB-C hub is a 'smart' breakout box for your USB devices. It may offer Ethernet, ports, charging, card readers and displays out too. This is handled by the chipset onboard the USB-C hub, delivered at the rated USB speed. There's no NVIDIA/AMD GPU inside, it's super basic. It can also introduce lag as data runs in and out of the chipset. It's unlikely to be able to pass through UWQHD 144Hz from a DisplayPort Alt enabled port, as it's communicating over USB and through the chipset on the USB hub, though I'd love to test this. (I've already tested a few USB-C hubs running dual displays out.) Btw, DisplayPort uses full size or miniDP connectors, and can run over some USB-C but they have to be connected directly to your GPU and the GPU must allow DisplayPort Alt mode, sometimes marked with a thunderbolt symbol- this is on a per-case basis. Most USB-C ports do NOT support DisplayPort Alt mode. A PC case with a USB-C front connector won't connect to a display. So nothing wrong/could be better with your current setup, it's fine. For a straight GPU to display setup, the limiting factors are all points in the connection, and the bandwidth. If all 3 points, the output connector, the wire, the input on your display, can support the high resolution/refresh rate, then you're fine.

    You can't expect an IGP to deliver max refresh rates, and there's three links in the chain, the GPU output, the wire itself, and the input of the monitor. From Displayninja.com: "However, keep in mind that some monitors have limited bandwidth over HDMI 1.4 making it max out at 120Hz or even at 60Hz in some cases (mostly G-SYNC and older monitors). In fact, most 144Hz monitors are limited to 120Hz over HDMI 1.4, but some monitor manufacturers will utilize custom timing parameters and pixel rates to use the full potential of the HDMI 1.4 bandwidth, thus getting 144Hz at 1080p. So, make sure the exact monitor you’re looking at supports 144Hz or at least 120Hz over its HDMI 1.4 port - or just look for a 144Hz display with HDMI 2.0. " Hope this helps. 1) You've introduced a 5th and 6th link in the chain, with one more wire and port with the adapter, which is likely not HDMI 2.0. 2) Many DP to HDMI adapters limit to 60Hz. Just use DisplayPort to DisplayPort wherever possible. Buy a cable! 3) It's not the memory on the card, it's the generation of the GPU which determines what kind of HDMI port the manufacturer has used. Although, newer cards do have more memory so there is a coincidental correlation 😂Please do subscribe!

Most monitors have a DP input, not MiniDP, but it's not unheard of. But first, Google your port. If it doesn't say it supports DP Alt, it most likely won't.

While HDMI 2.0 supports 1440p at 144Hz, the monitor itself, or an old HDMI cable can limit you. www.displayninja.com/which-cable-do-i-need-for-144hz/ It's 'possible' to get 144Hz with DVI-D. DVI-D is an ancient technology now, so you'll have problems with the connection such as the cable isn't the correct type (DVI-I vs DVI-D and DVI-A) and the cable isn't shielded properly. These cables were never really designed to go up that high. Also, your GPU may be able to hit 144Hz but at the very lowest settings. Also your Display may only have DP/HDMI and not DVI... most new monitors DO NOT. Don't throw money after old tech, time to save up.
