I have been studying & applying Tarot for 48 years & you learn something all the time. Just last week, I had a dream which showed a sign in the window of a store. When I was looking at the cards, a symbol that that sign was referring to jumped out at me. I had not recognized this symbol, even after 48 years studying. This added yet another layer of understanding to the HANGED MAN symbolism witch will propel me even deeper into into it's understanding. Learning Tarot is an ongoing process.

When I practice my tarot I like to do a meditation or yoga to balance my energies before a reading. Than I go with the flow with what feels right. And usually when I do this my cards speak to me clearly... Sometimes I'll just sit there and ask questions and I gotta say the tarot is easy silly or very straight forward. Don't get too stuck on the meanings of the cards, go with how the cards make you feel. That's what I've learned, namaste 🙏

Trying to "memorize" is something I did start with - now I'm pulling a daily card and just seeing what it means to me by intuition. Most frustrating is understanding the intent behind cards in reverse. Thanks for sharing your insights!

For the past year, I've been watching video readings, subscribing to tarot channels, and visiting those channels regularly. I've compiled a subscription list of about a dozen tarot readers who seem to really resonate with me. I'm learning the meanings of the cards by watching readings - not just those readings that are focused on my personal sun, moon, and ascendant signs...but for all signs, in an attempt to learn how to interpret the cards for others (by not being so personally attached to a reading). I've learned so much via this "technique", and you, Kate, are a treasure trove of important, very valuable information. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and insight so generously with fellow travelers on the journey that is tarot.

I spent a very long time trying to memorize the cards, i even spent a whole summer a few years back joining a local study group and nothing clicked, the only thing that did click was my passion for the cards. After coming across your channel I watched your 7 tips for learning tarot. The first thing I did was do a reading for the cards to get to know them and what our relationship will be like, their personality, oh my goodness in less than an hour i have a far stronger understanding and im suddenly connecting with them on a whole new level. Like an epiphany! Im so excitec to continue on thank you for all you do!🍀🍀🍀

Great video! I think people start with the majors since there are only 22. And tried the memorization thing and got frustrated. Something that has helped to understand the cards (the minors specifically) is learning the elements behind the suits, the numerology behind the minors, and how they are similar and different. It really helps things click.

  • @DailyTarotGirl

    @DailyTarotGirl

That's a good point, Cassandra - I can see how starting with the majors may feel less intimidating because there's only 22. I too found that understanding the elements behind the suits was helpful in really learning the four suits.

One "handcuff" That I found in reading Tarot Is Timelines are fluid. If you lay out cards & see something in them for yourself or someone else, it is only a "snapshot" of how things are right now. We influence a future "timeline" by our reactions to it. If something dire is observed, our recognition of it could change the results..So if a client says "The reading was hogwash because things didn't happen as you said", then they probably changed their timeline & your reading wasn't incorrect.

I like to keep things written down so I´m doing my own interpretations following like the base from the card and has become so much easier to learn them this way. Also, seeing the full suit as a story really helps to see the transitions in between them. Thank you for your videos, I don't fell so discouraged now

One major mistake I made when I was first learning was picking a starting deck that I just thought was cool rather than a deck that I really connected with. Even now that I'm more experienced, I know there are plenty of decks that I think are beautiful but that I don't really connect with, and I think that's really important to learning tarot. Find a deck that you don't just like but really can connect with and (like you said) experience the meaning and art.

I will not say they are mistakes, but rather problems i faced when i started learning tarot. (1) I googled online and copied all the meanings of the cards. Some time later i read it and find that the meanings are fixed and stoic and will not fit into the many varied problems and questions faced and asked by seekers. (2) I am still trying to get people to engage my service so that i can start reading for them. This is important because the more you read for people, the better you will get. Right now i am asking questions to myself and pick a card at random to try to read it and answer the questions. It helps a little for my training.

I’m learning tarot now. I think the most difficult thing to me is when I feel like I go blank, even when reading intuitively, I just feel like I’m getting nothing. I have to sit with it for a while to get meaning and that can be frustrating. I can definitely relate to wanting to learn it fast. These were good tips.

One negative mistake that I learned about tarot cards first starting out is what it means when cards are reversed. To me, I let the reversed action of the cards go as a negative. I later learned that, depending on the card position, it could mean a negative element pending as opposed to present. This could be any position where said card lays. Also, another negative is the significator. Just because I'm reading a man doesn't mean that I have to set the Male reflection in the card. To me, it's not very defining of the receiver's situation and/or focus of the message that is being translated, if that makes sense.

I’m 100% new to tarot and my first impression and feeling of the emperor is a nice warm and strong man. This card tells me: he is there for me and he will always be there for me guiding and helping me through thick and thin! A very strong figure a very positive card. Thats what my experience with this card is telling me, first impression.

Omg! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I got my first deck, Rider-Waite, not too long ago. I also bought a few books to learn it. I have been trying to do a card a day and memorize the cards and at the same time feel into them. It hasn't felt right and I have been putting it off doing it each day because I have been nervous to approach it. Something in me just told me to actually start doing readings for myself and seeing how what I pull resonates with me. It's weird - the Emperor is the card that I have sitting out right now to look at/familiarize myself with. Thanks for this!!❤️✨

The most frustrating thing for me is trying to trust my intuition, because every other time I trust my intuition I end up doing something wrong or get in trouble. I also have a hard time with the emotion aspect because I’m noticing more that I don’t like to feel things so that when it’s possible I just don’t. There’s a lot of work that has to be done with myself but I’m trying to stay positive.

LMAO at the pole dance remark! Loved it. I just subscribed and notice a lot of stuff is pretty old here and still useful. Thanks so much for the fun! I have been holding them. I haven't done a shuffle at all. I just want to look, feel, touch and bring them into myself. I bought the Fournier Tarot de Marseille and then I got a beginner book by Barbara Moore and the set of Steampunk Tarot and book from Barbara Moore. So far, I am fearful of making errors so I am handling them to get to know them. I have not done any studying on meaning yet. I am moving slow slow for no real reason other than it feels right.

These tips are just what I needed to hear right now. I recently started learning the Tarot after dabbling for about 13 years, and I find myself falling into a lot of the traps that you mentioned-trying to memorize, learning the Majors first (and falling into quicksand), pushing myself to learn as fast as possible. Geez. All of your advice is relevant to me right now, but your third tip is a game changer for me-it took me about 20 seconds to think of people in my life who had a strong Emperor energy and their strengths and vices. I really need to sit down with a deck and go through it with that kind of mindset. As far as what my biggest mistake has been, I'd say it's being too dependent on books. I love books and no matter what I'm learning about I always turn to them first, but when it comes to tarot they just aren't translating for me. I find myself reading about a card and absorbing almost nothing, and then feeling irritated with myself for not getting more from what I'm reading. It's always been that way for me when it comes to tarot, but I still keep trying because learning without books goes against my learning experience with basically everything else. Thank you for posting this video! I really appreciate all the information. I think I've realized at least 5 new things tonight about my relationship with tarot. Also, thank you for the resources and for mentioning in the description the deck name of the card you showed-I'll definitely check out your website (already bookmarked!) and I was going to ask you what version of the Waite-Smith you had until I saw that you listed it. I know I've heard of the Universal Waite many times, but I never realized how pretty the coloring of the deck is.

Hi Nicole! I'm so, so happy that my video was helpful for you :) Thank you for letting me know. I hope you find my website helpful, too! I hear you on the book thing - I too tend to buy a whole bunch of books on whatever topic I'm interested in. Tarot books can be helpful but you just need to balance out that book learning with experience based learning. I know sometimes people gravitate toward book learning because it feels safe and familiar, but don't be afraid to just dive into your Tarot cards and experience them! Cheers, Kate

when I used to teach Tarot, I started my students off , not by learning what the traditional meanings were, because that will handcuff your intuition....Instead I had them look at each key & go into the key in a dreamlike state & just recite a story that comes to mind. They were all very creative , but true.

  • @satansfilmnoir

My main difficulty that took me years to understand, and still not fully, is the court cards. The difficulty was, and sometimes still is, with deciding who the court card represents in the reading regarding the issue asked. And it makes it more difficult when it's just a current energy rather than representing a specific person. I highly agree with you regarding the 2nd and 3rd mistakes! Tough I personally believe; as a beginner you should definitely start with the Major Arcana, Since before approaching the everyday life in the Minors you should start with the The Fool's journey and with Archetypes and duality such as Masculinity/femininity, Manifestation/Inner wisdom, Mother/Father figures, Conformity belief system etc. Then to the Minors and then again to the Majors. My biggest advice for Tarot readers, beginners/advanced, is always taking into a consideration numerology and astrology. Being able to see if there are 3 three cards and its meaning, or a couple of fours which can be about foundation and structure etc. Thanks for the video!!

I did tarot many years ago and just followed the books meaning especially with the couple of friends I did a spread for, amazingly it all fell into place for those people but the mistake I made for myself was doing the spread for myself (I always did the celtic cross as it always resonated with me as I have Irish blood) and expecting a different result than the original reading as I found that if it was not what I wanted to hear I would get frustrated even angry, but the story in the reading remained the same even when different cards came out it still had the same rhythm. Even if I would place more "explanatory" cards on top, it still came out the same..... I think I was denying/rejecting my inner wisdom, the answer to the question at hand, my higher all knowing self. I never did an intuitive reading, just from the book as I was afraid of being wrong. so now I am following your videos and starting from scratch.... oh and I get my new cat middle to late April this year 2019 and am so excited that you related this as part of your must haves.

Robyn, I can definitely relate to this - I've been in that situation before where I didn't like my reading so I scrapped it, started over and got the same (or similar) cards! Anyhow, I'm glad you're finding my videos helpful and how wonderful that you'll be adopting a new kitty soon :) Cats make life magical!

Hi! Thanks for the great tips! I've always been fascinated with tarot from a young age. But now the time is right to start learning properly. I got my decks and book a week ago, and I just used my intuition for the most part. Then I check the book for further insight and pick what resignates. I'm a real newbie, but I have a ton of intuition and I feel so good when reading my cards 💛 I love to learn more and more over the years to come and have two more books on the way to help with my practice 😊

Thank you. The emperor explanation really helped put things together for me. I’m just starting out with tarot. I have the Tattoo Tarot Ink & intuition deck and I love the cards. I want to also get an original deck to see if I feel the same about the same card from each deck. But the cards I really would love to get once i feel a little bit better about reading the cards are the Ciro Marchetti decks. The artwork is spectacular.

This video was really enlightening, and takes some pressure off understanding these cards. I have no ambition of reading cards for other people outside of friends, but do want to use them for personal transformation. What you have said carries a lot of wisdom which I will wholeheartedly embrace. I am a beginner, and after frustration in the past -- this time I'm pulling one card for the day and meditate on it and also look up the published meaning. It's been very rewarding for me to do this, and helps me reflect on my life.

I'm still learning, and yes it has been frustrating, I've been going through books still not helping.. I've starting with one card, practice it then been moving on to next one, I feel like I've been going nowhere, I can't interpret the cards, been trying!! Trying to self teach myself, and it's like how do know if I'm doing something wrong or right! It's been a battle, but I'm not giving up, Thank you for this video

Stopping by to support. 😊 I grew up with Tarot and I've watched people learn in their own ways. Lol...it can be more like cooking actually...depending on the type of chef one is. Just straight memorization is definitely something I wouldn't reccommend. It's more like getting to know them as individuals....almost like people...and then there's learning all the quirks and nuances of individual decks (lol..there's a whole other personality right there.😊)

I know this video was posted a while ago but for me the justice card is always having something to do with the law. Police, lawyers , court proceedings, judges, illegal activity, winning in court. There’s so many different meanings depending on the question of course, where it’s placed, and the surrounding cards. But again justice always points toward a “ judgement “ of some kind ❤

I agree, start with minor and learn about the suits. You could do a halfway decent reading just knowing the meanings of the suits and elements... "Wow, there is a lot of water energy here, this is a very emotional situation." You may not be able to give the most detail readings, but you can use your intuition and give somewhat of a decent beginner reader just by learning the 4 suits. It took me a while to realize that you can give a good reading without "reading" every single thing about the card. I was giving a reading and I had a queen of wands and as soon as I started talking about fire energy, my querant was *already feeling goosebumps* its great to know a bunch of stuff about a card, but there is so much you can do with smaller amounts of information. I think we under-rate the meanings of the suits because there are 14 different cards and we know they don't all mean the same thing, so we ignore that they *are* different expressions of a type of energy. If we spent more time in the begining learning about those energies, I think our readings would be easier and more fun. (Like learning to paint with big sweeping motions before we learn about putting little details down)

I know i'm late and this may be similar if not the same as other comments, but the most frustrating thing for me was trying to figure out when to read the reverse meanings instead of the upright. I only just learned to watch for whether or not my cards are upside down for reverse or right side up for upright readings.

I have been listening to readings before bed for myself, then ordered decks... And although I'm a Pisces and normally have lots of intuiton, I am afraid to not have any when it comes to tarot reading. I haven't done it yet, not to me, not to anyone... But i feel like i might not have enough self confidence to "pull it off" so easily as all the ones i watch... it's like i don't know how or where to get my intuition with tarot. And in my own life, i most often realize after an even occurs that my intuition was correct.... Any tips? And I love your voice. It's soooo calming to me!

I am a firm believer that it takes failure (or mistakes) in order to achieve success. In anything. For me, with Tarot, there are no mistakes or wrong ways to practice, only better ways. Much like each one of us are different, so shall each tarot reader perform and read uniquely. A lot of the difference comes from the particular cards chosen. I use angel tarot cards by Radleigh Valentine. The meanings written on this particular set, give me a much more clear vision of understanding. I am very new to this, with only 2 months experience. I feel that until I am better at understanding what they are trying to tell me, focusing on the written meaning works best for me. There is always a sentence or 10 that I know is what they are saying to me. Then I study the picture with that In mind. That’s when I get the more specific details to each different person that I have worked with. It is intensely spot on. I absolutely love it, and can’t be more thankful that I have been chosen to receive such gifts. I also always use my pendulum to make sure the cards are correct and In the right spot. Which makes each reading even more accurate. Namaste 🙏🏼

Hi, I’m a newbie and find reversals a bit frustrating. What do you do when reversals show up in your readings? Do you assign the opposite meaning of the card? Or read it as an upright card?

It’s much easier for me to relate and understand the major arcana than the minor arcana. I have a lot of trouble with the minor arcana and maybe this just depends on the person or the deck.

So I know this isn’t the newest video but recently I finally got my first deck and my first assumption or response to having the deck was worry. I was/still worried that there’s a certain meaning of each card and if my intuition is wrong I feel like I’m not doing it right then look at my guide books to help me. But recently I’ve been more open minded reading them by intuition as well as relating to the imagery. I’ve had issues connecting with a few of my cards but normally I can pick up on the meaning or keywords

Hi Kate, great video!! I’m still learning, but one mindset change that I have had to make, was with regard to cards that are typically read as “negative”. I would worry when seeing those cards pop up, like they were some kind of bad omen. I had to start thinking about them as more, this is the type of energy that may be involved with what’s going on with a situation, and it’s more of a helpful alert so that in recognizing that, the negative sort of energy can be changed or avoided? (Does that make sense?) In other words, don’t be scared of the negative cards, start seeing them as helpers to point toward a more positive direction. Thanks!!

This is great, Liz! The negative cards are indeed helpers in may ways, always pointing us to what needs changing or how we can overcome them.
