the climber will be my next SAK. What I like about WENGER is the nail file can be sharpened and turns into a small blade for opening cardboard boxes and other small tasks

I just put white plus scales on my Climber, and hung a Quattro on the lanyard. It's a fairly tool dense arrangement.

The Camper is one of the best pocket knives you can get in my humble opinion. That saw is worth it's weight in gold. Perfect for a day out in the wild - in my case the canals of the Black Country!

The Wenger Traveler is dang near perfect for EDC. Wish they continued making it. Wenger did well with slimming down the layers. 4 layer Wenger is about the size of a 3 layer Victorinox.

Three layers are what I have carried for over 15 years. First a Yeoman (which is the same as the explorer except redundant tools are removed so it's 1 layer thinner) and more I carry the cybertool 29, which compliments my Leatherman Wave perfectly. I'm also surprised you didn't mention the compact in your 2 layer video, I'd definitely recommend checking that out in addition to the two I just mentioned!

The 3 layer knives are my favorite. For me they are the best edc sized SAKs. The 2 layer knives are often compromised in some way (including the compact), and the 4 layer and up knives can get unwieldy and often have tools you don't use very often. My baseline SAK is the Climber, it is what I judge other swiss army knives by. Not that the Climber is the best, it's just what I use as a baseline measurement because it has all the essential tools (for me).

Happy Wednesday Mark, my 3 favorite 3 layer Swiss Army knives that I frequently carry on a rotational basis are in order of preference 1) the 91mm Climber - in particular various colored Plus scaled or unique decorative scaled models & some camouflaged scaled models as well as the Silver Tech version and almost all are fitted with SwissQlips for convenient pocket carry 2) the 93mm Pioneer X - I have 4 , one blue & one red scaled special edition Wanger models & 2 of the 2021 orange limited editions, one of which I carry & the other is in its box as a collectable 3) the 111mm Rucksack - I have 2 pre-2017 Slide Lock versions, the newer one with red scales ( bought new in box this year when it was on sale locally at a 40% discount ) & the much older one bought some years ago on Ebay ( in grade A condition ). I fitted it this year with new blue scales & had the blade re-sharpened ( I have used it frequently) . Those are the 3 layer SAK's that I have as frequent carry components of my EDC rotation along with various scaled 4 layer 91mm Huntsman & 93mm Farmer X's plus my 111mm 2 layer slide lock Picknicker, 2 layer 111mm liner lock Garant & 1 layer 111mm liner lock OHO Alpiner grip model I do have 5 x 91mm Campers in my SAK collection, including 2 collectable decorative scaled models from Tortoise gear , 1 x red camping logo model & 2 plus scaled models but I seldom carry them nowadays as part of my EDC rotation. I might buy an EvoGrip 14 as a black & red scaled one is on sale at a discount by me locally, its the regular non-lock model which makes it the 85mm equivalent of the 91mm Climber, I would prefer the lock blade model but they don't stock it & I like & sometimes use my 4 layer 85mm EvoGrip S17 & S18's but they are no longer a regular EDC rotation knife ever since I dropped a lot of SAK's after I bought 2 Farmer X's & began using more my 111mm SAK's & even the 74mm Executive teamed with a Swiss Army 2

3 layers is my favourite. I have a 3 layer Wenger very similar to your Traveller but instead of the nail file it has a flat Phillips head screwdriver? I don't know what it is called. It has that lock on the main blade.

Sounds like you have a 85 mm Swiss Sportsman...the 91 mm Climber is the Vicky equivalent...they were sold in the States by L.L.Bean in black, green & I think red... the ones sold by Bean have their name embossed on the scale below the Wenger logo...discontinued & sort of difficult to find...Nice!

A SAK can have up to three layers and still feel like I can drop it into my pocket like any other knife. But with any more layers, it becomes thicker than it is wide and turns into a slab-o-tools. Not that that's a bad thing. But it does feel like it's moved into a different category and role.

@@jojitsu5620 lol I go around and around in my head about which one is best. I still haven't bought a climber but I did find a Wenger Traveler the other day on ebay, still in the original package. Won the bid at $23! Its about like the Climber but unfortunately doesn't have the scale tools. It's not as thick as a Climber either tho which is nice because it's slimmer in the pocket. Congrats on the Climber tho! I'm sure it'll be a great knife!

Good video, Mark...thanks!...I would say that if you want a 3, the Climber might be your ticket, or perhaps a Compact...for 4's, I'd say a Huntsman for suburban/country carry & an Explorer for urban carry...for both, buy both or get a Swisschamp, although some say it is too bulky...the Wenger Swiss Sportsman is another 3-layer alternative, although discontinued...they were sold by L.L.Bean in the States...Bean had their logo embossed on the scale just below the Wenger logo... they came in green, black & perhaps red...a really nifty knife...one of the very few with a locking blade & a flat in-line Phillips...I believe other models of the SS had a file instead of the Phillips...

The Camper was my very first Swiss Army knife. Then I switched to the Hiker for the Phillip's screwdriver. Then I switched to the Huntsman and finally switched to the Fieldmaster. I wish there was a version of the Ranger with a Phillips and no corkscrew.

My favorite 3 layer is the Harvester. It has become my go-to knife for gardening and yardwork. Normally prefer the corkscrew, but I have intentions of picking up a hiker and doing some modifications to make a nice whittler (Converting small blade to Wharncliffe, can opener into spoon gouge, and adding a chisel to the cap lifter).

@@name5949 I really wish Victorinox would use that pruning blade for more models, it is extremely handy, especially as a package opener. I find the can opener to be very useful, but I know many people don't and would probably really like more options that had the electrician or pruning blade instead.

Climber with the nail file instead of the small blade, or evolution 14 with a back hook would be the assolute best... well no, a climber small with the nail file instead of the small blande (and still with the hook) would crush them all! :D

there are reasons to use a 3 layer sak, i just got the camper because i have a spartan and just dont feel like its enough you know. so getting one more layer just makes sence. also i never usd a 4 layer knife. i thought of getting a huntsman but decided to get a camper instad. and i have some preaty small hands so right now- the camper is just right. i also think a farmer is a good choice, if you like the alox saks.

There's no space for the scale tools on the Alox versions. The don't have liners but use the Alox scales instead. There's no in between space between liners and scales, that could hold tweezers and toothpick. Therefore it's very slim in comparison. I personally prefer having the scale tools over the thickness advantage.

I am a beginning collector and have specific needs for one particular desire. And that is it includes a heavy duty scissors. I opened a lot of bags picture sealed across the top well Sir where's wiggles pretty that will not let your thumb and finger peel it open.... I just cut all the way across the top ohh baby seal plastic bag and then roll that down for later ceiling without a Swiss army heavy duty scissors I am at a loss. Don't send me to the smaller version. My problem with greater valuations like the one in this KZread is that here comes up the exact knife I want and a label or title given quickly in the oral announcements but no notice of how can I get that specific knife--- it's a real pain to see just what I want and not find it anywhere for purchase------------------ somebody help me out OK
